Dang! I’m tired just reading that, @ClassicMom98
I have an announcement. Today I hit a milestone … 50 pounds lost! I started in January 2017, and the weight came off in chunks. The first 20 pounds came off pretty quickly, but then I’d stall and hold steady. Then a few more then stall. This week, I went to my rheumatologist, and she said that the last time I saw her, in June, I was 15 pounds heavier so the last big chunk definitely came off with y’all.
So, THANK YOU! I still have many pounds to go, but I am merely overweight now, not obese!
Wowser that’s 10 5 pound parties! We have lots of celebrating to do! I hope you feel great!!
@Youdon_tsay - Congratulations! That is quite an accomplishment!
That is great news. I hope you feel better overall because of it. Keep up the good work!!
Drawing everyone’s attention to the March Madness pool. If you’ve never done one, it’s totally fun. Weeks of entertainment!
Any advice for getting past a plateau? I have been at same weight for past 3 months despite working out daily. BMI is at high end of normal so I think I should be able to lose a bit more - maybe 5-10 lbs. I am not a fan of fad diets like intermittent fasting.
@Momma2018 - I’m not a fan of certain diets either, but a few changes to my eating habits helped me lose weight. The biggest one was cutting back on processed food. Instead of eating things like canned soup, I make my own from scratch (it’s easy, I’m actually not much of a cook). Instead of a frozen lunch entree, I make a grain bowl (whole grain, veggies, kale or spinach, a small amount of seeds/nuts, a little protein) topped with a home made vinaigrette. I make enough on Sunday for the week. I google recipes on line - eat a lot of fish and veggies.
This is not a “diet” it is a lifestyle change for me. Good luck!
@Momma2018 congrats on the weight you have lost! I think @FallGirl has great advice. Are you exercising? If you are already eating pretty well I wonder if you could increase your daily exercise by a little bit if that would make a difference?
I think it’s true that if you can rely less on prepared food and more on healthy basics even if you’re not a big cook (lean protein, healthy grains, lots of vegetables, some dairy and fruits and good fats) you will be easier able to control portion size, salt/seasonings, fat, etc.
I at one point decided not to even worry about the number on the scale. It’s how I look and feel that is my gauge. Also knowing I have upped my exercise means I’ve probably developed more muscle so a couple extra pounds may just be muscle gain - if I don’t look or feel more flabby!
congrats on the milestone Youdon’tsay!
I am also at a plateau at the same place as you Momma2018, just at the top end of normal. It keeps me in goal range for ww for when we ever have to go back and do an official weigh in. I know I could improve my eating and when the the weather gets warmer do more outdoor exercise , and considering many worse outcomes from the pandemic I am ok with the plateau for now.
I so agree with @FallGirl about the processed foods. The woman I call my trainer (it’s not like we work one on one; she leads my exercise class) got me off Lean Cuisines and all that stuff. Not only are you not really sure what’s in it, but the chemicals play a number on your hormones/adipose fat in ways I don’t fully understand. Her paper on it was published so I know she knows what she’s talking about. I Googled and found this article about a small study around processed foods, and it matches with my experience. Most people aren’t getting enough protein.
That’s an interesting study @Youdon_tsay . I changed my own eating habits on Jan 1st , 2020 (never anticipating a pandemic!). It was just a hunch I had. It took some getting used to making things from scratch, but honestly was not that much more work. I had put on some weight in the few years before that (despite becoming a runner) and this was the way I was able to take it off.
Side note: people who see me now in person and note my weight loss (about 20 pounds) frequently comment “You ran it off!”. I looked at my stats. I only ran 130 miles more in 2020 than I did in 2019 (when I could not lose weight). At 100 calories/mile thats 13,000 calories which is about than 3 pounds. So, while the running is the more “visible” part of my life (I post about on social media) , it was really the eating changes that accounted for the weight loss.
One of my favorite sayings is you can’t out-train a poor diet.
I like: You can’t outrun your fork.
I started running about 4 years ago. In order to loose more than the first few pounds of weight, I had to also start dieting (which was really a great thing… got me tracking food, improving my eating habits.) I lost about 15 pounds the first year and then took a long while shedding those last 5 pounds.
To maintain the weight loss I do have to keep moving (running and various other exercise), even if I eat right. Admittedly I still drink a modest amount of alcohol. One week I checked MyNetDiary and laughed because my alcohol calories were approximately same as my exercise calories… thought maybe it would be simpler to be a teetotaler
Simple is overrated You’ve got to have some things to look forward to.
Great hiking day. We explored 3 different battlefields (Cold Harbor, Gaines Mill, Malvern Hill). Total step count is just over 23K
Ha. JimmVa06 beat me. I’m visiting older S playing urban citizen. We’ve spent the day walking around and eating. We are at 19K steps. But I will still have to walk back from the hotel from the Metro. It’s been a great day. I was planning to run if I woke up on my own. Instead, I slept 9 hours straight. Usually I manage 2 before waking up for something. The wonders of a king sized bed and no pets.
Today’s run was the virtual MCM 17.75K (11.03 miles). My pace was 11.04 minutes/miles so my pace almost matched my distance! I was very pleased with this.
A group of us got together and did our run. We had a little “party” after the race and it was fun. This is the kind of thing that has helped keep me together in the last year.
Today was my 1st day on soccer season for the spring. I helped run our new coach orientation. Don’t ask me how but I got someplace around 7K steps just running around a field.
Toss in dinner walk (2.5 there and 1 home), I had 12K+ step day
