Fitness, Nutrition and Health- All Welcome (Hardcore and “Light”)

I feel like I’ve gained a little weight over the last week (since I had 2nd COVID shot last Thursday and haven’t exercised much except for walking), but I haven’t changed that I’m aware of since COVID. I was home from work for several weeks last summer, and I worked out at least an hour, at least 6 days a week. I hope to do the same or more when I’m retired. I did another walk during work today. I met a friend I hadn’t seen for a long time to walk. Unfortunately he went to my office, after I’d sent him a message to meet me in the parking lot. I got in a brisk couple mile walk in any case.

Update on tonight’s numbers. It was 3.6 there and 2.3 home. Am reasonably certain that this was offset by beers and dessert (ice cream sandwiches with chocolate ship cookies)

Our “COVID gym” is finally complete (just as I’ve had my final vaccine). We got a LifeFitness IC 7 spin bike, a LifeFitness E1 elliptical, and a Concept2 model D rower. Just set up the rower this morning. We’ve had the bike since November, but the elliptical only came a week or so ago. We also have small weights (up to 12 pounds) plus a maybe 15 lb kettle ball. We will not re-join our gym when it opens. If in retirement I feel like I need something for “socialization” I’ll figure out what I want to do then.

13 mile training run this morning. Low 40’s and sunny. I felt so much better than on last week’s long run. Will have Happy Hour this evening

I was thinking something similar. Now that I can go to the gym more safely, now my shed is comfortable again! I am not in a hurry to lift at the gym anymore.

A little bit of joy this morning. No prescribed lifting workout, so after my stairmonster session I did the 30 min upper fix from 21 day fix extreme. And it was not hard at all. It was challenging, but definitely not HARD. I remembered this being a killer workout. I was pleasantly surprised

It sounds like there are lot of well earned Happy Hours!

Yesterday I decided to walk to the grocery store (about 1.3 miles away) to try to get a corned beef, which had been out of stock for our WalmartToGo order. Yay - mission accomplished. Also tried to get on vaccine waitlist, in case of snow cancellations, at that grocery store as well as Walgreen’s on the way home. No luck on waitlist mission, but it was great to get outside. Also was happy that Walgreens was well stocked with Necco wafers, so stocked up with more for running.

Walking to the grocery store now and then had been one of my goals for retirement. Alas, covid concerns have caused us to to mostly grocery delivery. In a few months it should be safe to do that. Also perhaps I will ride my bike to the farm stand we used this summer instead of farmer’s market visits.

As I think I’ve posted, my weight has been very steady since August when I re achieved my ww lifetime goal weight. I bought some new pants and winter tops a few months ago as the clothes I had did not fit and were very frumpy. Not that I go out and wear actual non-sweats clothes that much, happy if I have a “dress up occasion” once a week.

Well, the pants that I bought are really getting too loose. Which leaves me scratching my head since along with steady weight I really don’t think I have gained muscle, at least I don’t see it. But as a confirmation, I tried on a few belts which I know weren’t fitting last time I did this exercise and now I can use them.

I am not buying new pants again this year, so it will have to be the belts if I feel the need. I need to buy new shorts and will wait a bit longer before doing that.

I haven’t posted in a while, but I continue to read and enjoy every post here.

For those thinking of adding equipment to their home gyms, with the light at the end of the tunnel after Covid, hopefully, lots of used exercise equipment should be coming to the various online marketplaces (Facebook, Craigslist, etc.).

For me, in terms of exercise, all is well and I continue with my CF programming. My running has tailed off a bit, just because I find it a big hassle to run in crowds and/or avoid people on the street. Until we hopefully reach herd immunity, I’ll continue to use the treadmill at the gym, but long runs on a treadmill bore me.

As of this week, the worldwide CF competition known as “The Open” began. Each Thursday, for 5 consecutive Thursdays, a workout is released in various forms (with or without equipment, adaptive, scaled, etc.). I usually do a trial run of the HIIT on Friday night and then record myself for submission on Sundays. All for fun, I won’t win anything.

It’s the first workout of 2021, so they call this week’s workout “21.1.”

Today I did a 7 mile walk, rowed for 20 minutes, and rode the bike for 30 minutes. I like having the rower. I can do it for 15-20 minutes at a time and not get very sweaty if I don’t have time for a shower, for example.

I played just short of 90 minutes soccer this morning. It was small sided (5v6) and I got just over 7.5K steps. I also got a hat trick.

DW and I waked 1 mile each way to dinner so it was a good exercise day. Toss in my other chores+ steps around soccer that Fitbit does count as exercise and I’m at 17K for the day

We dealt with Colorado snow… 3 times today. That’s plenty of exercise for me.

We had at least 20" of heavy snow since last night. We are verry relieved that we decided to get a new snowthrower a few years back when the 25 year old model from NY (not used much in CO) died. I had to uncover the shrubs by hand and did a lot of hand shoveling on sidewalks for us and neighbors, but hubby did all the tough snowthrower work. There was hot chocolate served at our house today.

Ugh, I am not envious of that snow @Colorado_mom ! And so much! Shoveling is very hard, not really good exercise for your body work!

Congrats to everyone on the recent accomplishments!

@sushiritto really good point about the home exercise equipment surplus that we might start seeing on resell marketplaces!

And wow that 30 pounds is even worse than the “freshman 15 or 20”!!!

I actually think I’ve lost a couple of pounds (JUST a couple) but also have firmed up a bit. I’ve been FINALLY doing more regular strength training and not just cardio and I think that is benefitting my upper body.

Crossing fingers that we actually get a good spring - so often is seems our weather stays cool and then jumps to hot without getting that pleasant just WARM!

@Colorado_mom - I thought of you when my friend who lives in Ft Collins posted about the snow. Hope it’s gone soon and you are able to get out again.

Yesterday was mostly a rest day but H and I did a 4.2 mile walk. I have a (virtual) race this Saturday - the 1775K (11.03 miles) which is part of the MCM races. I plan to go easy on the weekly running. Today was just a slow 3 miler on the treadmill.

@abasket - So glad your strength training is yielding nice results.

@FallGirl - Yes, we were able to get out today. There was not much plowing of our street (usually none, but this was a big storm), so there is now way we would have even tried if not for hubby’s appointment for his second covid shot.

@Colorado_mom - yay for your H getting his second shot!

Pretty typical soccer night-90ish minutes and about 7K in steps. Early morning 3 mile walk was a little painful because I took a little knock late night

Added 2 miles (1 to/from dinner) to the day. DW had big work thing and we needed to celebrate.
Extent of celebration is between our livers, God and our VISA

Lol!!!

Still lots of snow here. I had to succumb and cycle on the trainer bike. Only 15 minutes today - I’ll do more tomorrow. Plus some arm exercises. Perhaps tomorrow I’ll do a bit of xc skiing.

Celebrating a birthday today - club coronagym is 1 year old. I found the picture/sign I made last year. It was only supposed to be for 85 days. I think @abasket mentioned she didn’t realize we started the shed gym for this. Sort of. We had most of the weights/equipment in the shed, but they were scattered about and we rarely used them. Only if the gym was closed for snow/flooding. We added the power rack/weight, broken mirror piece and a second bench in April that we got from our old gym that closed/foreclosed on in 2019. Also added a pull-up bar, dip bar, and a sad little exercise bike with a seat too short for me. H was supposed to use it to keep warm in between sets in the winter.

Today was a doozy. It was pouring rain (the storm has reached us), so I did 60 min of intervals on the stairmonster, followed by 20 min of bike intervals. Then I came home and did Week 3 Legs from the Work followed by some Fight Round 2 of ShaunT (HIIT type thing). You know it’s bad when you consider the 1 min. intervals of push-ups and burpees as rest.

And now you may stick a fork in me. I am done.
