@Colorado_mom can you just do your walking in the early morning like you do running?
I will walk no matter the temperature pretty much. I do in the warmer months use the early morning for a minimum of 30 minutes of outside exercise either running or fast walking. Yes it can be humid and even warm at 6am but I know it’s better than what it will be at 6pm!
Most days I follow up though with at least another 30 minutes of evening exercise. Hot is hot! All it takes is a shower to get back to “normal” after a hot round of exercise.
That said, just returned from vacation in West Virginia where we did lots of hiking. Ground is pretty flat at home so these REALLY felt like hikes! Our favorite was a 4+ mile hike to Cranny’s Crow outlook (Lost River State Park) where you have a view of 5 Virginia and West Virginia counties.
Just checking in. I’ve been doing my normal thing - usually biking, walking or elliptical for at least an hour (often more) every day. I probably only use the rower 2-3 times a week, but better than nothing.
yeah me too. I was pretty unenthused the last month. I still did my thing, but my workouts were all over the place program wise. Coming back from vacation, I’ve committed to a new to me one. MBF (muscle burns fat) and MBFA (muscle burns fat advanced). It’ll get me through the next 6 weeks and close to my bday. I’m also going to start limiting my time in the gym some due to delta. It’ll be more than it was through April, but less than I have been doing. I did run to the gym and did 35 min on the bike and run home before the lifting workout.
I started working out in mid-April. Started personal training, three times a week, at the beginning of June. It is helping so much! I’m down 31 pounds since I started losing weight last fall. Now I’m feeling stronger, too. My trainer is starting to prep me for downhill ski season.

[/quote] - Yes… though I’d likely sleep longer and walk or bike later. The heat only bothers me for running. (In cooler weather, I’m the crazy lady wearing shorts and short sleeves when some of the walkers are in leggings and fleece.) I just don’t like walking very much by myself, a bit boring even with podcast and splendid scenery.
I would love to get hubby walking with me. He actually needs the exercise more. We do plan to hike tomorrow. Looking forward to that!
My husband and I deferred our planned hike, so I ran 5k yesterday. We hiked early today… just a short, flat trail (Lily Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park)… but glorious. After we came home I biked to our local lake and around it twice (10 miles total).
I think I figured out why I don’t like walking as much this year. When I was working, it was wonderful to get away from the stress of my job. Even at the home office there was plenty of interface with people via video conferences, phone calls, online chats. Walking alone with a podcast was a nice change of pace. In retirement / covid, isolation is less appealing so it’s more tempting to be lazy.
Here’s a “thumbs up” to Brooks. I’m a loyal shoe wearer to a point. I wore asics gel lytes for 13 years until the were discontinued then mizuno wave precision for years until they were discontinued. Then I’ve bounced between wave riders and brooks ghost since then. The last year or two I’ve been mostly in the ghost.
I always have 3-4 pairs in rotation in different stages of life/wear. So each pair gets worn 1-2x a week. My latest pair has pink/coral soles. The first time I wore them on the stairclimber, I noticed the steps were covered in pink dust when I was done. I haven’t used them much on there since then, but yesterday I noticed the same thing. So I wrote to customer service and took a picture. I got an email today saying they were sending me a new pair
I finished the first week of MBF today. I didn’t think I’d enjoy it as much as I did. It’s different. In some ways it seems easier than my usual workouts but in some ways it’s hard. She does a lot of asymmetrical training which is new. And I’ve been pleasantly sore this week.
Monday was the Flume Gorge and the Lonesome Lake via Cascade Brook and Pemi Trail in Franconia Notch.
Tuesday we summited Mt Washington-- it took us 6 hours to get up and was the toughest climb I’ve ever done. We decided to take the hiker shuttle back down.
Thursday was Mount Katahdin. The hike to the tree line on the Hunt Trail was amazing. DW got to the 1st iron rung and decided to call it. I worked my way through that section and got to the last open ridgeline before the Tableland. When I got there the clouds had rolled in and I couldn’t see the markers so I called it. We have a plan to try again (maybe even next summer).
Friday was cool 6 mile hike to Orin Falls in the Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument. The falls were amazing.
Saturday was Gulf Hagas. The views were incedible. But in the last mile coming out, the skies opened up and I got wetter than I’ve been while hiking.
Great job @jmnva06 … nice perseverance! Hiking is probably my favorite kind of exercise. Well maybe my favorite free exercise. I really like downhill skiing too, learned around age 8 back in NY.
Yay - We had a wonderful hike in Rocky Mountain National Park (a daytrip for us) yesterday. Hubby had to arrange the timed-entry on July 1, when most August reservations were filled. It was a rock filled path with alot of up/down sections (some with steps, some without). We did not make it all the way to Cub Lake at end of trail, ha never have. But the 3 hour, 3.5 mile leisurely hike with lots of photos stops was delightful. This is an area impacted by fires last fall, closed earlier this season.
On Tuesday I did something different… volunteered at the local biweekly food pantry event. Not much of a workout on my gig. It could be if I decided to do lifting or running carts around the pickup zones and out to to the cars. But likely I’ll stick to the easier signups for sorting / packing. After all of my food tracking etc over the past years, it was interesting to be helping get food to hungry families (350 served via Tues drive-thru and hundreds more via Wed dropoffs around town)… folks just struggling to have food, any food.
Since I haven’t been working lately I’ve been doing a good job with exercise just about every day. Yesterday I only did half an hour (didn’t want to sweat bc I got my hair cut), but normally I do an hour or more. Still mostly biking, elliptical and rower, and mostly indoors because the heat and humidity have been crazy here.
Oh here too! I can’t complain but so much, because in general this summer has been mild. But oh this week has been dreadful!!! And now with delta I’m trying to run more vs bike/stairmonster. It’s been a challenge.
