Training plan called for 13.1 miles today. My training partner and I ended up slowing down and walking the last 4 miles. It was hot and humid, we were both tired and struggling. Some days are like that. But we did get our distance in.
That’s great perseverance… nice job!
Good for you. Today was NASTY!!!
This thread is super inspiring! Wow, so many hikers! I need to start getting stronger so can do those with my family - two kids are now in a gorgeous, mountain-filled area of the country!!
PS wanted to send an endorsement for chiropractic (if that’s something you like). Never did it much, but just had an adjustment and it is really helping with stiffness and alignment as I get back to yoga and weights. A nice complement to workouts!
I never tried chiropractic until 2 years ago when I injured my ankle. After an x ray showed no broken bones I saw a sport medicine oriented chiropractor (highly recommended by several runner friends). He fixed my ankle in 3 sessions. I am all about doing exercises at home and avoiding medicines/surgeries if possible.
Long time no post! Plugging away here with the usual running and swimming. I was spinning but now Covid numbers here are so bad I had to give it up. Makes me sad. The studio is 90% vaxed, but I worry about that 10% and seeing my dad, who is vaxed but did not yet have a booster.
Terribly hot here in SoTX.
So a week ago I posted how my friend and I struggled on our 13 mile training run. Today it was hot and humid (again!), and we were scheduled for 14. This time we did our run/walk (at a decent pace) for 13.5, then walked the last half mile in. So…I am very pleased that we had a better day.
Another thing. Last weekend I volunteered at a local sprint tri (a shorter triathlon). My job was handing out medals at the finish. It is seriously the best job. So much fun to get to congratulate people at the finish and share in their joy! I have great respect for everyone who did this event (I can do the running part - 5K, the swimming and biking not so much). The very best part was welcoming a friend in and giving her a medal and she was so happy to see me. The second best thing was welcoming in the very last finisher. In my opinion, this is the very best part of racing.
Great job @FallGirl ! Training for a Mary this time of year is TOUGH! I preferred training through the winter much more.
@Lizardly i am so sorry you are stuck in covid land - especially when it’s so friggen hot outside. Hang in there.
I finished the MBF videos today. Tomorrow is just the stretching one and I added it in earlier this week. I’ll still stretch tomorrow. I stretch almost every day. MBFA starts on Monday. It’s not much different, just a little harder and “A”dvanced.
I’ve added in a lot more running this week vs stairmonster & bike. Our covid cases are just rising so rapidly. Sigh. On the bright side, my ATs seem to be holding up. I’m still adding in walk breaks and sticking with easy and flat running. But I did a few 80 min sessions without issue. Today just 3 miles and then the stairmonster for an hour before the 25 min power ignite video. I’m sticking the main gym sessions to the weekend when there are fewer than 5 others in there. And I am back to wearing my mask outside of the stairmonster time. Joy.
Are you tempted to do a triathlon now?
Actually, no. I’ll stick to running. Even though this was a “mini tri” both the bike and running courses were hilly.
My daughter did a sprint triathalon once. She mostly liked running but needed to switch things up due to shin issues. We used it as an excuse to buy her a nice road bike for 25th birthday. She no longer swims, but 7 years later she still loves that bike!
Per MapMyRun I had only run twice in August (8/2 and 8/4; it’s been hot with bad air quality. Gardening has give me plenty of stretching and outside time but limited aerobic exercise ). So yesterday after my husband and I picnic’d at the local lake park I walked he 1.5 miles home. That gave me confidence to go do a 5K run this morning Later I did my 2nd gig at the local biweekly food pantry, this time I was part of the large cart brigade delivering/loading many heavy bags into an endless stream of cars. It’s the first time in a long time that I’ve had over 13k steps in a day.
I’m in the same pattern. Other than walking to dinner and playing soccer, I’m not doing much (compare to winter when we walked every day).
I am in a holding pattern after having gained a couple of pounds on vacation in June and then being sick a couple of weeks ago so no activity. I actually didn’t even close my Apple Watch standing ring. lol Too wiped to stand. I’m back to working out every day, but I don’t feel as “on” during my workouts. Powering through and hoping to regain my mojo.
Y’all, I’m baaaack. Had a great workout. My average heart rate was 141, and I spent a good 20 straight minutes in the mid-140s to 150s.
Yay!!!
I’ve often thought of doing this event locally. I’m just such an event wimp - hate committing! This is a women ony event:
"Trillium is designed especially for women of all ages and athletic ability — whether new to multisport, casual swimmer/biker/runner, or an experienced athlete. Every participant will receive a medal, flowers, massage packages, mimosa’s and at the finish. This day is all about you. Registration is open to women only. Bring your mothers, daughters, sisters, aunts and BFFs to particpate with you and cheer you on.
There are different ways to participate:
Triathlon → 400 meter swim, 11 mile bike, 3.1 mile run
Duathlon → 1 mile run, 11 mile bike, 3.1 mile run
5k → 3.1 mile run
I can swim but I am not fast and I think any pressure to be fast or in someone’s way or whatever would STRESS.ME.OUT!!! It does seem like truly there are women of all ages and abilities - I should try it one year!
You should do it! It sounds fun! (though I admit I hate committing and doing events too.) I’ve done two tris - the first one hardly counts cuz I was 15 - but they were both super fun!
I’m now into the 3 week MBFA (muscle burns fat advanced). I don’t think it’s much different than the MBF. It’s not the hardest program by far, but I’m enjoying it. And my body is quivering by the end, so it must be doing something.
I’ve been doing well staying out of the gym for much of the work week. I’ve run/walked 25 miles since Monday and only 20 min on the bike. But the weather is SO GROSS! This is the worst weather we’ve had all summer and it’s the end of August. It doesn’t look like it’s going to break any time soon either. This morning at oh dark thirty it was just below 80 and the air was thick as soup. blech! (whine!)
When it comes to triathlons, I always gets tripped up by the swimming. I can swim, like most, but I rarely swim, but I’m not a big fan of cold water. I just don’t like being in cold water. Now, a triathlon in Hawaii, I’m there!
Go for it @abasket
I continue my preparations for the 1/2 Spartan Race in September and then my Powerlifting meet in October, which means I’m trying to fit in the mileage and CF with squatting, benching and deadlifting. I’m only Oly lifting 1x week, which is much more fun for me. My weeks are packed.
My worst lift is the deadlift. I hate it. I’m getting better, but I’m still not very good at it. Personally, if you ask me, my physiology is not quite right for it.
I can’t wait to be wearing that singlet, with a few hundred people watching me deadlift on the platform, both in person and streamed online, and embarrassing myself. But hey, that’s what it’s all about. Being uncomfortable.
From my triathlon bil, many beginners are not swimmers. In any way, if you can float and kick, you can do a beginner triathlon.
They have wet suits (which you can rent) that make you more buoyant and help the swim. Besides being warmer.
Masters swim groups are a great way to learn to swim in a group. It’s not full of good swimmers, but also those who want to swim.
I on the other hand am not fond of the water, I can swim, it’s the water I don’t like.
You have to let us know when you’ll be streamed. We will cheer you on!
I could never do a triathlon … can’t ride a bike!
