Fitness, Nutrition and Health- All Welcome (Hardcore and “Light”)

We were in Clarendon at my son’s place this morning, and we were supposed to walk along the C&O canal near or up from Georgetown, but my husband just wasn’t getting it directions-wise, and he wound up going the wrong way multiple times, so we hiked closer to home. 5 miles done. Weather is beautiful.

Per my plantar fascitis thread, trying to rest a worrisome (but not horribly so) heel. I’m still gardening at home, to dig up my geraniums (propagated from plants my mother had on her windowsill until 2020) before temps dip below freezing. But I did turn down an opportunity to help pull up plants at the church giving garden. Doing more stretching etc inside than usual for this time of year.

I was out there working in my yard today, then I almost felt down, luckily my yard is planted with lots of trees, like a jungle, so I was able to grab to some tree branch and it helped me. Phew! This is why I always wear rain boot when I garden, at least the boots are holding my feet.
So this afternoon, I did a few hours of lifting heavy 15-gallon containers, I moved a few around to better location so they can grow better. Yeah, that’s my weight lifting in real life.

Knee update. Saw my family practice doctor last week and she referred me to the Orthopedic specialists. She suspects a torn meniscus and recommended I wear a brace. I have done that and it does make it less sore. Still not running but I am walking a lot and practicing yoga. Putting further barre classes on hold for now as I know the yoga pose modifications, but not sure about barre.

Ugh I’m sorry. On the bright side, if you need surgery or the meniscus, it’s a realtively easy process. That’s what I had 5 years ago.

My knee is a bit wobbling, weakness more like it, so I just keep exercising. I try not to rely on surgery yet. I thought I might do a hip surgery at age 60, apparently it has not been bad, so I keep putting it off. Last night I did order 5 more jars of Tiger Balm online, somehow years ago Rite Aid could order for me but lately they don’t. Tiger Balm seems to help me and my husband with sore or stiff muscle, but it does stink, not pleasant smell, this is why a lot of people at my pickle ball court don’t like to use Tiger Balm.

Today I went swimming for 30 minutes, this is after making bread and a pumpkin pie. I think it’s best to stay busy.

I did 30 minutes swim today, it’s was in the low 50s here, but waited until it’s a bit warmer. Enjoyable swim and surprisingly the tightness in my left knee is not there anymore.
But the really good news is I’ve lost weight yesterday after eating ramen noodles for lunch.
I barely did any exercise. I think I need to eat more soup.
I was worrying the gluten from the bread I’ve been making regularly here.
Also back to doing more squat and core exercises in the evening too. Making progress but slowly.

I’m confessing my vanity here.
I just got a new bike helmet (actually, my husband is giving it to me for Christmas).
BUT, I paid well over what I really needed to so I could get a good color.
(Yes, it has lots of safety features too). We often take selfies on our bike trips, and bike helmets look bad enough… I at least want a good color.

@1214mom , do tell, what color did you get?!!

Also curious - what brand did you get? I’ve been researching helmets (started bike riding) at the Trek store.

It’s a Specialized prevail ii with angi. I tried some at my local trek store and wasn’t thrilled. I also tried REI and another bike store. This is an old model, and I wound up having it shipped from someplace in Missouri.

Very cool! Love the color.

I got a moderately priced Bontrager w/MIPS - apparently the Wave Cell tech is the latest and greatest tech (and a totally different tech than MIPS?) but purportedly both are good. A family member is a semi-prof mountain biker and he said that any quality helmet like this is adequate.

Enjoy!!!

I tried on one of the wave cell ones at the Trek store. Yes, I do believe both are fine (mips/wave cell). I considered a Giro too.
Honestly, one thing that helped me press the button for the Prevail is a guy at my local bike store. He showed me a picture of his helmet after he had a crash and put an 18 inch hole in someone’s windshield. He had the Prevail I was considering. His helmet was destroyed, but it did it’s job.

I hope you enjoy biking. We try to bike mostly on bike paths, but do some streets also. My husband and I have taken several biking vacations at this point. We like to do long-ish mileage rides, but then have great food and beds ready for us at the end. Biking is a great way to experience more of a vacation locale.

That’s a great color on that helmet. As my father would say…“Wear it in good health!”

I have been continuing my weekly pickleball - playing for an intense hour on Wednesdays. I’ve added an hour of casual tennis twice a week as well.

All of this feels good and healthy, but I am definitely getting tight from the very one-dimensional workouts.

I had been toying with the idea of getting back to a yoga studio. I haven’t taken a class since March 2020, although I usually take a few minutes for a couple of low-key poses and stretches after my morning coffee. Anyway, at $25 per class at the studio, when I’m currently cutting back on expenses where I can…just couldn’t bring myself to do it. So this morning I happened to awaken extra early and instead of going right to coffee and phone scrolling, I unfurled my yoga mat and casted a 30 minute routine from YouTube to the big TV and it felt so good! Poses that used to be no problem for me definitely felt challenging, so I know I’ve got some work to do. My new goal around this is to make time for one of the 45 minute routines 3xper week.

I did one of Adrienne’s routines…I really like her (and her dog). Anyone have any other good recommendations for YouTube yogis?

No yoga recommendations, but here’s a light stretch routine I started doing every morning during Lent. I was surprised how much better I felt during the time I was doing it. I need to get back to it!

I haven’t done regular classes at home (or the studio that went out of business) in forever, but I used to love Adrien. She has done several 30 day challenges that you can probably find. But I also love Celest Pereira. She is similar in that she is very positive end encouraging. And she’s british, and I love her accent. She also has lots of short tutorials for advanced poses. Kassandra is another that I used to do sometimes.

Just a general check-in.
I have started playing PB 3 times a week when the weather cooperates (we’re trying to get as much as we can in before it gets too cold). I usually play for close to 2 hours at a time.
We’ve been trying to ride our bikes twice a week, if the weather cooperates, usually 27-40ish miles at a time.
If I walk, I usually do 4 miles or more. If I do the elliptical I often do longer.
I haven’t ridden my spin bike in a couple of months, but as it gets colder I’m sure I will.
My exercise “streak” according to my watch is now over 200 days. (That means I exercise at least 500 calories).
I feel like I’m doing pretty well overall. I am probably getting too much cardio and not enough strength training, because I haven’t been doing weights much. I just picked that back up. (I only do a few minutes each evening, but figure every little bit helps).

That’s great that you are enjoying the biking, 1214mom! My hub and I are just getting into it (he has fancy e-bike, I just have an old hybrid that I got reconditioned). It’s been really fun finding local trails on weekends, throwing the bikes in the back of the SUV and heading out.

How far are your rides, usually?

Did 30 minutes of swimming today. Then I made sauerkraut in the afternoon, lots of chopping and massaging. I’ve read sauerkraut is good for the immune system, so I’m going to try this.
After making sauerkraut I then went outside and planted 2 more peonies. Dumped another big compost bin. Spent a total of 3 hours gardening. I should sleep well tonight.
