I never was fast so middle of the pack would be an improvement.
@1214mom, I work out every day so I keep moving. I don’t want to hurt myself again, which I did while a marathoner, and really derail my good habits. I get great endorphins from my home workouts, but I LOVED trail running in a whole different way. I did intervals today – roughly four minutes walking and four minutes running – with my longest stretch of running being five minutes. It’s been 20 years since I ran nonstop that long. Was excited to do it. Unfortunately, right now the cedar is so bad outside that I won’t be walking or running outside anytime soon!
Maybe I’ll set a goal – 5k turkey trot or something. Right now that seems like a both a huge goal and a baby one (I once ran an ultramarathon!).
You did that ultramarathon but this could be a new journey. A return in a different way.
Are you competitive or can you be satisfied with the main goal jist being the enjoyment of running shoes and outside time for shorter runs?
It was partly sunny and 54 when I got home from work today , a novelty in Ohio in January! Added a 3 miles walk to my 3.5 miles of exercise I did before work - will end the day with 10 miles + of steps - not bad for a work day!
I am competitive, but that’s not the problem. It’s that I am not good with moderation. I am an all-in person, which sometimes is great and sometimes not. It’s something I’ve consciously worked on. I like to say that I’ve gone from a Type A person to a Type A-.
Been a good week so far:
walked longish way to dinner on Monday so got close to 10K of steps
Tuesday: 90 minutes of soccer
Wednesday: walked 1.4miles each way to friend’s birthday party
today: 2 miles round trip to breakfast
Assuming things go to plan, I will get good days in tomorrow and Saturday
Between the cedar count and my sore quads today, I probably won’t be running again soon! Interestingly, I have friends who are upping their running game this year, in their 50s and 60s. Are we all trying to stave off aging?
I didn’t start running until I was 53! Had never run in my life! Never a desire to do long distances but have kept steady combining 2-3 runs a week with other stuff for 10 years now!
The streak continued. I worked a full day at the office yesterday so had the walking part of my commute, went out to lunch about a mile from the officer and then had dinner at our usual Friday night beer garden (took Metro to the subway stop closest to it and walked) and walked home from there. At the end of the day, I had walked 7 miles
Streak is over-- our hiking plan for the day got canceled and I realized it was the English FA Cup 3rd round. I’m not likely to break 1K steps for the day
My “streak” of getting over 500 calories on my Apple Watch said 275 days, either yesterday or today. I was happy when I got to 200, but I admit watching that number go up does help motivate me.
I thought our NYs trip might break it, but it didn’t. We are going on a couple of other trips in the next several weeks, and I suspect I break the streak soon.
“upping their running game this year, in their 50s and 60s. Are we all trying to stave off aging?” - Yes indeed! That was part of the incentive for me to start running at age 54.
@Youdon_tsay - I do say it could be good for you to consider running, IF you’ll be able to do it in moderation (ie minimize wear and tear on your joints) and remember to stretch when done. I had a bit of a scare a few months ago with some minor plantar fasciitis pain. It seems better now, with good attention to shoes and stretching.
Restarted the streak
Played 100+ minutes of pickup soccer this morning. Toss in the warmup/kicking ball around pre-game and fitbit is counting it as 123 minutes and 9K of steps. Post soccer was a grocery store trip and lots of wandering around the house. DW and walked one of our longish ways to dinner (and had 1 mile home). I ended the day at 23.5K of steps
Finally checking in. Might have seen on the travel threads, but I had 12 days off over Xmas for our vacation in Austria. It was amazing, but I caught a cold on the way home. The only one to get anything! It was just a stuffy, congested nose, the worst of which was over in 36 hours. No fever, cough, etc. So I did some workouts the next week, about 50% of the usual and light effort. But it turned into a sinus infection late last week/weekend - more time off. (I had 6 negative covid tests over the 8 days. And never had a cough or fever or anything. Just crud stuck in my sinuses.) Finally got antibiotics/Prednisone Monday morning and felt so much better by the evening. Gave it another day off for good measure and started some lighter workouts Thursday-today.
And the weird part is that my runs have been amazing this week. Like 30 sec/mile faster than lately. Time off was good? So it could be the Prednisone, my super serum. Either way, I enjoyed it!! Today was 9 miles with the middle not very flat and very windy 10K in 50 minutes followed by a 30 min leg workout and 30 min of yoga.
Shortly I will be getting my last shingles shot and hopefully the last shot until flu next fall. So tomorrow will likely be off again. Monday I’ll start the new year for real.
I also spent most of the last week doing my mixbook. I have probably spent 24 hours on it. A bit embarrassing but it’s my main souvenir. I love it
I didn’t work out for several days around Christmas and was delighted how ache-free the first few workouts were. Good to take some time off occasionally.
Just doing a check-in. I’m still working hard here.
Today had a Part A, B and C. Part A was hit a heavy clean, Part B and C were timed. Part B = a triplet of 30 cleans, lots of jump rope and a 2,000m row. Immediately into Part C = 3 rounds of a 60’ weighted yoke carry, 10 pull-ups and 15 heavy kettlebell swings. B and C took me about 28 minutes.
As I was recovering from my workout, someone in the gym comes up to me and asks “Are you a natty?” I associate the term “natty” with “national championship,” so I told him I didn’t understand the question.
He then said “Are you natural? Are you taking something?” I answered “Yes, a ‘One-A-Day’ vitamin for men over 50.”
Fitbit says i crushed my exercise goal this week. I played soccer Tuesday evening. On Wednesday i traveled to Philadelphia for the Soccer Coaches Convention and giot 8k steps for transit. Thur/Fri//today wracked nup 7k+ steps wandering around convention plus bonus steps walking to dinner. Also pogoing at punk show counts as steps. I was definitely hot and sweaty post gig last night.
Getting into the shower last night, I started to slip and put my hand out on the wall to catch myself. I did – thanks stronger core and increased balance! – but I definitely felt something tweak in my arm. I didn’t have any range of motion issues, but my right bicep definitely felt weird, like maybe a muscle pull. I’ve never had one of those, but that’s the best way I can describe it, just a sensitivity in the area. My dh last night advised I take Tylenol to get ahead of any potential pain or inflammation. When I woke up today, I “felt” it again. Not painful, just a little sore, for lack of a better word.
Is it worth icing? I’ll definitely avoid weights today.
We’ve had more snow this January than usual, in fact more than any year since 1991 (we moved here 1993). Also it’s stayed unseasonably cool/cloudy with low sun… hence LOTS of snow (for us anyway around). No running for me in many weeks. My XC ski boots broke, so I ordered NEW SNOWSHOES .
I tested around the yard and street a few times and then yesterday went for a 30 minute trek around the neighborhood. Today I had the back strap better adjusted and stayed out for more than an hour. The first half hour I only saw one truck (instead of the normal dozens of cars and some walkers). Our side streets don’t normally get plowed, so the sides where not beat down by car tires were nice and velvety.
Thought about posting about it walk/run thread (where mentioned the idea) or the good buy thread (Amazon order was $52 - included poles, bag, tax and shipping). But I miss exchanging exercise updates ere.
Knocking on wood, but besides the cyclone just before Christmas that really only left a couple inches of snow we have been spared. That may end this weekend……
I’m like clockwork with my minimum 3 miles of something sweaty before work - this time of year rarely running then because it’s too dark. I walked at least a mile at work during the day on a purposeful walk and then usually do another 1-2 miles of something after work - this time of year that might be a run. I don’t care if I only run a mile then - call it a “shake out” mile - because I’m doing other things earlier in the day.
It’s a ways away but I will be happy for spring, more daylight and more opportunities for outside stuff.
