Weekly check-in. I did start the Insanity-P90X hybrid schedule Tuesday. I think I’ll do it for 8 weeks vs the prescribed 30 days. I like it a lot. Today was just a run/abs/yoga. My running is still going well. I didn’t think I’d ever crack 17 min again for the segment to the gym and today it was 16:30. A little effort, but not hard as I still had another hour to go. Roughly 10 miles for the morning.
I am so glad I got the shingles shot over with. I had a strong and somewhat strange reaction. I had the normal aches and chills for 2 days, but the night after I threw up my dinner. Granted it was a Diablo burger and onion rings which often tears up my stomach, but I never throw up! Worse though, was the swelling. I probably gained 15 pounds. My eyes were the worst. That lasted until tuesday-wednesday and then my shoulder just itched for several more days. But now it’s over. No more shots until fall!
But worse, H - who always clears his throat/coughs - seemed to do so more often Monday night. He warned me Tuesday that he had a cough but he otherwise felt great. I had him take a covid test just to say he was negative. He was positive. Ugh. I then took one wondering if my shingles reaction was actually covid. Nope. Negative. I sort of hoped I was positive. So now I am just in waiting mode. H’s cough mostly went away after 2 days. Slight nasal congestion, but less than I have in a normal day. Energy level has been normal. He is NOT good with caring about those around him. I sleep in another room and wear a mask when we watch TV together (he never wears one) but otherwise that’s it.
So we will see. But so far my workouts has gotten stronger throughout the week… Please let it continue. Between the cold/sinus infection/shingles reaction, I’ve been down for 2 weeks already in 2023! I don’t need covid now
Sorry to hear your H has Covid. And it’s in your house! I really wonder if there are LOTS of people walking around exposing others because the symptoms are often so mild.
I’m 110% certain that’s the case. You’d have never known he was really sick at all. And I wonder how contagious it really is since nobody masks or social distances or avoids anything anymore around here.
I do worry about being a covid carrier. Almost 2 weeks ago, I had a Sat night sore throat. Took a Covid test/negative Sun morn to make sure not to expose the elderly lady I was picking up for church. (A few minutes later later se called to cancel due to a stomach bug.) I switched to sleeping in guest room, and it was nice to be retired and lazy as it go progressively worse. Had negative Covid tests on Tues and Wed. On Thurs it felt like my chest was congested, and I went to urgent care. PA said it was viral, gave over the counter med advice. And gave me option for the triple swab test (covid, rsv, influenza) but said I could skip it since treatment same regardless…. ie too late for covid meds. I said Do It - I have older husband home, and if it’s Covid we should know about the exposure. But it was negativex3. I still do have some congestion, but today I’ll try going it without meds.
Ugh. Just when I was feeling a little more confident, H’s workout partner just tested positive. They worked out together on Monday. He has a runny nose and cough. He asked H if he thought he would be ok to workout tomorrow. Umm. You think a hospital ER nurse would know better. Now I’m afraid I’m doomed. Boo
It’s our streak mentality! We don’t want a blemish on our Covid record!!! . It’s bound to happen though. but also hopefully your vaccinations will keep things mild if it arrives
@ClassicMom98 my husband’s Covid symptoms were very similar to your H. Acted like really bad GERD. He has GERD and will clear his throat (super annoying) when he has a flare up.
Since we didn’t think we had been exposed and he tested negative for a while before ultimately testing positive, we neglected to be super careful. We don’t go too many places but still.
The good news is that I don’t think that he was shedding too much virus. I did test positive but it was because I spent an extended amount of time in the car with him after he tested positive. It was unavoidable.
No one else we were around got it. (Unfortunately we were visiting our daughter).
I’m pretty sure he has GERD too, as it’s the worst between dinner and bedtime. But he would never do anything about it. His health routine is to ignore until you absolutely can’t anymore. And that goes for me too. If I’m sick, I’m still expected to do everything as usual. One of my many hot buttons. At least I don’t have the kids to take care of anymore
How soon after did you test positive? How long was the car ride? I “had” to ride did an hour with him yesterday. He won’t wear a mask or crack open his window, so I double masked and opened mine all the way. We went to a flea market. It was either I go, or listen to him whine all day and walk around like a caged animal complaining about being in a tomb. There are only so many battles I can pick.
I woke up with a little glob of goo in my throat this morning. But I’m still negative and otherwise normal. And I did dust some yesterday and I’m allergic. And it’s raining and I never feel good ok in the rain. So who knows. I just hate being so freaking paranoid. And if he still is positive until Friday, I may have another 10-12 days of this…
We were in a car together for 12 hours and I tested positive 4 days later. It was inevitable and I accepted that.
It’s horrible to get sick when traveling. Just the worst.
We were extremely careful not to infect anyone else during that drive. Husband doubled masks and only when to the bathroom when absolutely necessary. In and out, avoiding areas near any others. I masked and only went in to use the restroom and buy snacks. It was pretty miserable but we made it home.
I tested negative that morning and felt fine. Still could have been asymptomatic but we really minimized our exposure.
@abasket - Your consistent daily exercise routine sounds great. Keep up the good work!
Yesterday I got out on the neighborhood side streets again using the new snowshoes for an hour. The snow is packed down in the center of streets (and even bare at one place - must get a lot of sun there). Conditions would not have been consistent enough for my old XC skis, unusable now that the boots bit the dust. So it was fun to have the new snowshoes. Honestly I was like a giddy little kid, seeking out the remaining stashes of velvety snow near the sidewalks. (Neighbors did a fine job shoveling, so sidewalks are dry and safe for walking. But I loved the chance to do things differently.)
Today I’ll go try the snowshoes out at the lake trail. There - now that I’ve typed out the plan, I’m committed.
Well it seems my not so darling H gave me covid. I guess it was inevitable. I had to go to Walmart this morning to get birnax tests. Whatever I got in the mail a few months ago are terrible. H’s sort of showed up on Saturday. But mine yesterday the whole strip was pink and if you looked hard you could see it was darker by the control line. This morning the whole thing was pink and if you really used your imagination you might have said there was as a line where it would be positive - but nothing where the control should be. Birnax box, it lit up immediately in a couple of minutes.
I am not pleased. Main symptom is I lost my voice. Just gunk in the throat. And a strong headache, though I’m used to those. Energy level seems ok but my heart is racing. I use the oximeter all of the time. Usually it gives me 50s60s for my HR. When I had strep/sinus infection it was in the 80s. This morning it was 116. The oxygen is still 99-100
Today’s workout was also a good deed. Spent 90 minutes chopping half a driveway for an elderly friend in a walker who has been stuck inside for weeks. Two Sundays ago I stopped to pick her up for church, and her inclined driveway was a skating rink. Had to cancel out, even though she was up and dressed and ready.
We’ve had the most cold and snow in January that we’ve seen in our 30 years here in Colorado, and with some partial thawing her driveway had about 2 inches of ice in most places… some of it really stubborn stuff! Some of the chunks were as big as a dinner plate, easy to throw to the side. Others I had to shovel and toss.
At the end, I had a shock taking off a glove to see blue fingers, phew - glove lining dye, not black and blue.
Hope you feel better soon. I suspect your workouts even at non-peak health are still pretty impressive. (And even if not, it’s ok to have a break now and then.)
This made me remember an article in the Washington Post a couple of years ago. I don’t remember it exactly, but the coach of one of the HS teams around here said something like “your assignment for the day is to help your elderly neighbors dig out of the snow.” @Colorado_mom, that was very kind of you.
My mom fell and had a traumatic brain injury Friday. I spent three nights in the hospital but managed to get walks in when my siblings were there. Today is the first day I did a regular workout, and, boy, was it a workout! I stayed in the 150s and 160s for about 30 minutes straight. I don’t know whether I was super-excited to be working out or whether that week of not doing much except eating had really taken its toll.
