Fitness, Nutrition and Health- All Welcome (Hardcore and “Light”)

Interesting start to my run this morning… Last night, I read how someone has been stealing from cars and to be on the lookout. They posted a ring doorbell picture of the guy in a light colored hooded sweatshirt. So, this morning I walk down our driveway - which is between 2 retaining walls and a bit isolated - and I get to the the bottom when a cop drives by. He immediately slows down and stops. Um yeah - I’m wearing a sweatshirt with the hood tied down to my eyes. Great. No, I’m not the thief. I took off my hood to show I was a girl, and he drove slowly by, turned around and left. 30 sec later another copy drove by. Understandable, but at the same time I run by these cops in my burgundy sweatshirt every morning. You’d think they’d know! But better safe than sorry. I ran for an hour and it was a pretty solid run. Just grateful the rain is over for a few days. Then abs and another short yoga video.

:hushed: wow!

I’m over 300 days for my little streak of 500 calories a day on Apple Watch. I’ve walked at least 4 miles each day we’re on Grand Cayman, and I think most days show 6-7 by end of day. I’ve hit the gym a couple of days, but mostly just walk, and do some exercises in the hot tub. This coming week I may finally swim some, but won’t record it on my watch. I don’t ever wear it in the water. I guess I can count snorkeling as exercise too, but didn’t add it to the watch. My friends think I am weird the way I let my watch “control me,” but it works for me.

Very jealous of your vacation @1214mom im glad you’re enjoying it! Much better than the cold rain back home.

I’m feeling out of sorts and blechy. 5 weeks of: traveling, 2 significant illnesses, shingles shot reaction, and general whacked monthly/hormone mess has me just all out of sorts and fluffy feeling. I try to remember a little over a week ago I didn’t care if I got out of bed, so there’s that. Next week I hopefully start doing a full workout schedule. I still have some residual congestion which is annoying. It seemed to move out of my voice box into my sinuses. Just a little as my sinus rinses and clear and unblocked. Maybe it’s just allergies. God only knows at this point. It’s just annoying. Just go away! And please don’t let me come down with something else! It doesn’t help having H work in a germ factory.

This morning the windchill was 12, but it felt
great. Much prefer dry and cold vs cold rain. I ran 9 miles. Not a terrible for me now pace, but I was hoping for faster. Then 45 min of power yoga with Travis Eliot. I have seen a little improvement in yoga this week. It would be nice if I could keep it up. Doubtful though.

Sorry you’ve had such a hard time lately. Hopefully you will get better AND stay better soon.

DW spent 25 hours in NYC on Friday/Saturday. Had a great dinner on Friday and saw 2 shows-- F*ck 7th Grade (singer Jill Sobule’s autobiographical musical) and the musical Some Like It Hot (based on movie and it was really awesome).

The exercise benefits of the trip were that we did a ton of walking (even in the super cold temps) and got in about 5 miles both days.

An hour of tennis in the beautiful sunshine today was just the remedy for my blah mood…

I’ve also been actively trying to be more mindful of my eating for the past several weeks. Right after the new year, I had a super stressful turn of events (aging parents issues + we had a person very dear to us pass away suddenly and tragically). Let’s just say I’m not a stress eater, just the opposite. So, in three weeks of not having much of an appetite and simultaneously abstaining from alcohol, I dropped 10lbs. As soon as I started eating “normally” again, the weight started coming back, obviously. I decided that I really would like to keep 5 of those 10 off, so I’ve started doing something I have never really done before…really pay attention to what I eat. In general, I eat a pretty healthy diet, but I’ve not paid attention to portion size or keeping tabs on total caloric input/output before. Gah, it’s a lot of work! I’ve been making a daily eating plan and trying to keep calories in the 1800-2000 range. I’m still doing my best to get at least 10k steps a day. I still haven’t touched alcohol since New Year’s Eve. Not sure I’m ready to say I’m never having a drink again, but I haven’t yet found a reason to have one.

So far, it seems to be working.

I used to love Jill Sobule in high school. Haven’t thought about her in years. How was the show?

It was great. She is a really strong writer and the songs really captured the feelings of certain key moments.

So sorry for the stress and also the loss of a loved one. <3

You had a first hand few that it’s “easy” to lose weight if you don’t eat, but that easily gets reversed when you start back to eating - sound silly, but I people don’t seem to always realize that the best “diet” is one that you can live with 80-90% of the time - not a temporary fix diet.

I always say if you eat decently healthy and as you are doing, the next best strategy is looking at your portion size. If you can put 10% less on your plate at each meal, you will gradually see benefit from less calories and probably drop a maintainable weight. Especially if you’re physically active!

And as I’ve always said, for me, I don’t weigh myself very often. The yo-yo of a couple of pounds that naturally happens would drive me crazy! I prefer to rely on the mirror and my clothes to tell me how I’m doing. Even elastic pants can get tight!

Back from a week at a Mexican all-inclusive. Had some walking and a few skip-the-elevator stair treks to 7th floor room (yikes the first time- Lobby level to E level to first floor…THEN start counting, about 20 stairs each flight). But mostly it was just a week to eat/drink as desired and concentrate on appreciating 80 degree beach weather and a few times off site to see more of real world Mexico).

Hope you had a great time! And that all the logistics went smoothly.

My gym has had a influx of new members. We used to have about 80 members, but I heard we now have 160 members. And I’m left wondering if this new member surge is just the usual New Year’s Resolution crowd or because the gym isn’t your “PF” or “24” type gym, will these folks stay for the long term?

Strangely enough, the gym hasn’t gotten overly crowded, with the exception of Monday evenings, which is a typical gym day pattern for most gym goers, and Friday evenings, which is an atypical gym-goer day.

I will say that it’s nice to see some new faces, but I do get worried that “my gym” will go downhill, such as finding an open squat rack or weightlifting platform becomes a chore.

I often get asked what program do I follow and would I be interested in programming for them. I was asked last night by a young woman. I actually get programming from 3-4 different exercise “philosophies,” since no one “philosophy” is perfect for me. I then blend them together in order to create my own programming.

Tonight is the 6:30-6:45 PM weekly run group from the local Fleet Feet store. I’ve been thinking of joining, but running in mid-40’s at night is not my jam. But I’m thinking about it. 99% of my gym are 20 and 30 somethings, but the running group looks more my age.

I kept up my exercise during vacation, and I doubled my move goal yesterday and will likely double it today. (That is not normal - I just had multiple activities yesterday, and since I played pickleball for 2.5 hours today I decided I might as well shoot to get double again).

I actually spied on them a couple weeks ago. It’s a sample of one run that I saw, but there appeared to be three groups. I’d be in the middle somewhere. The fastest group looked to be pacing around 5-6 min/miles.

Maybe, just maybe, on my best running day ever, with a couple days of rest, I could squeak out ONE 6 min/mile. But collapsing from a coronary would be a very real possibility and I’d need $1 Million Dollars worth of motivation at the end the single mile race.

OMG 5-6 minutes!? They need to be running somewhere else!!!

We know one thing about you … you like a challenge! As Nike would say, Just do it! I bet you manage to find a way to work yourself into the fast group before long.

LOL - I can’t even do 1km in 6min.

@abasket - Vacation was great, and we were extraordinarily fortunate with easy logistics. (Snow didn’t start coming til we were back home). When more caught up I’ll update the Mexico thread.
