Fitness, Nutrition and Health- All Welcome (Hardcore and “Light”)

All gyms are now closed in VA by order of the governor - unless you can keep it to < 10 people. But I did not know that when I woke up. When I went to bed, the gym said it was changing from 24 hours/day to 5am-10pm. So, I got up and went to the gym at 4:30am as usual and started running my 10 min loops. At 5am, not open. No biggie. At 5:10 - OK that’s weird, but maybe the employee is running late. At 5:20 I stopped and went to the door and saw the sign. Poops. So, I ran 30 more min very easily and debated what to do about my workout. I did not want to workout at home with H puttering around, so I chose a video that only uses the bands in my gym bag. I did it on the sidewalk outside. It wasn’t that bad. It was a pretty morning in the upper 40s and still dark and the shopping center was mostly deserted except for a few random people who also didn’t get the memo.

So we are in the process of setting up our shed. It’s large, but it’s full of yard stuff and also a lot of plywood that’s going to be installed in our attic in a month. I’m thinking I just need a small space for dumbbells. And it looks like I’ll be running a lot more => which means I’ll need to slow down the pace and hope my body holds up.

Life can definitely be worse. My older son called and his roommate had been sleeping all afternoon/night/morning with a high fever. They were self-quarantined, but the roommate went to the doc and it is strep. Never so happy to have a strep diagnosis. And even better is that his upcoming job in August sent him an email saying not to worry about the job going away. They are looking forward to him coming and everything is still a go. But then we just got word of a confirmed case in town. It’s been a huge rollercoaster of a day for sure.

@conmama I have never heard of a thunder headache - sounds painful and a little scary! How long did it take for it to dissipate??

Bumping this up in case anyone has info to share with you.

First day of working at home. Went for 1.5 mile walk before it was light and before I started working. This is something I basically do every day. Then at “lunch time” I ran a 5k on our neighborhood trail which is becoming the neighborhood salvation trail! It is never “crowded” but more than one neighbor has admitted it’s the only place they go outside of their home!

@ClassicMom98, oh what a relief about the roommate!

@conmama I haven’t heard or or had that kind of headache, either. It sounds awful.

@mom60 , thank you. We are shut down but are using a program called Zoom to stream classes. A coach will post a class on our schedule and clients sign up for it just like a regular class. At the designated time, the instructor starts the class and there is live 2-way video. The cool thing is that everyone can see and hear each other so it’s very much like being in a group class except the delivery system is internet streaming. Philly has become a hotbed for the virus. Between Monday and Tuesday, 1000 new cases were reported just in Philly, let alone the surrounding suburban communities. It was a 25% increase!

@MichaelNKat - sounds like what our yoga studio is doing, except I don’t know if the video is 2 way. I signed up on line (I am on a unlimited yearly class pass).

I ran outside this morning. Been keeping up with my running buddies and checking in. Most of them are single and live alone so we like to let each other know we are there for each other.

Keep it up everyone!

@conmama I have not heard about those headaches either. I am sorry they sound terrible!

I did one of the shorter abs workouts, and the yoga meditation. Plus a few arms things with TRX and dumbbells. And DH and I went for a shortish walk. (1.5 miles)

@conmama That headache sounds quite scary.

I went to my first exercise class via Zoom. It was good to hear the familiar voices; felt a little less isolated. We had to be muted once class really started because the background noise was distracting but it was nice to have a quick checkin at the beginning and the end. I will definitely want to keep doing some of these, just to stick with my normal routine (even though the class was different from what we usually do, since people don’t have all the equipment at home.) I pay the gym membership by the month and it’s a small business so hopefully people will keep their memberships going even if the Zoom classes aren’t exactly what we are used to. At least it’s something.

Home workout Day 2 was an SBD day. Squat, Bench, Deadlift. Fast, high rep (50 reps each), lower weight, more for cardio purposes. And finished up with a 3x10 of glute ham raises. Later took the dog for an hour walk and that’s always an experience. She’s not a great walker.

@conmama Chiming in, I also have never heard of a thunder headache.

@FallGirl Can’t you run with a few members of your group, but maintain the proper 6’ of social distance? Seems weird, but possible. I’ve always run alone, but then I don’t have friends that run.

@sushiritto - I plan to ask some of my running buddies if they want to do a small group run this weekend (maintaining our social distance). It will be hard to chat though being 6+ feet apart!

Going to stream my Sunrise yoga class in a few. It will be nice to hear my regular yoga teachers voice.

For those whose gym has shut, have a TRX at home and are looking for some workout ideas, TRX is offering free access to the TRX App for 3 months. And if you buy a new TRX, you get a free year subscription. Go to TRX’s website for more info.

Our running group is still meeting for group runs but staying the 6 feet apart.

I think with the running groups it depends how big the group is. It’s one thing to organize 4, 6, 8 people to run apart - harder to do it with a bigger group. After all, darn runners are competitive and just see that person ahead of them as someone they need to pass!!!

With our big running group, there would be packs of maybe 3 to 7 people, but then it would really string out. I was often by myself anyway since I’m older and slower, so it could work for me if I weren’t injured. No meeting up at Starbucks afterwards these days, though.

OK, my Yoga studio will be live streaming classes on Zoom starting next week. That will be much-needed relief for me. I just can’t seem to motivate myself to do anything other than walk the dogs on my own. I live alone & am under a shelter-in-place order, and don’t have a dedicated exercise-space in my house – so I think that any attempts at in-house exercise right now just reinforce my feelings of alone-ness.

On the other hand, it turns out that Alexa can teach a Yoga class, so that’s something

I continue to walk the stairs at work multiple times a day (I hope they are healthier than the elevators). I walked 4ish miles when I got home from work, and then I lifted light weights and did some other exercises in my home.
I need to offset the stress eating of ice cream and white wine consumption somehow!

I’m meeting up with 4 others for a 10 mile run on Sunday morning. I’ll see if a few people want to do a shorter run on Saturday. Of course we will practice the social distancing!

I was happy to do my regular class today. Apparently the studio is still open, 2 people showed up in person for the class (other regulars) they kept their mats far apart (no shortage of space!). At the end of the streaming we were all posting greetings and many of the other regulars I know were also signed on so that was nice. It’s a great group of people.

Too busy to get out today. Working from home but had to run into the office briefly, only saw 5 other people and didn’t get close to anyone. H and I walked after dinner and I’ll be rowing soon.

CA is now under statewide shelter-in-place order. Yay, not.

Thursday is typically a rest/recovery day, but it’s a different time now. I have to get out of house. So I went to the local track again and did the following:

At 0:00 1 mile run
At 10:00 100 burpees, but capped them at 70 so I could get about a 2-min rest.
At 20:00 1 mile run

Then I went back home to my gym and did a 15-min AMRAP of pull-ups, GHD sit-ups and DB swings (no kettlebells).
