I don’t know where everyone is but outside today in Htx was barmy. Everyone and their three dogs and 2 kids were out on the normally empty MUT and it’s parks. Like they had all had a cardio come to jesus moment (frankly I expect injuries to increase looking at some of the peeps).
In town in the Bayou park it was especially busy, boot camps, athletes doing group workouts (not normal people, these looked professional). Outdoor yoga, outdoor cross fit. Cyclists, penny farthings, scooters, roller blades, skateboarders. Usually you wouldn’t see this traffic on a weekend even. If you want to get this virus, renting a bike is going to be your best bet. So many people on those rented bikes.
Granted is it fabulous weather. Maybe the UV and the wind helps limit problems but it certainly wasn’t hot. Not sure if it is worth riding outside. Certainly the excess of people don’t know how an MUT works, that in itself might cause issues.
Day 2 of no gym. Keeping up the general routine will be key, but my AT s are already feeling the effects of all the running. I did bookend the 60 min very slow jog (1+ min/mile slower than usual the last 2 days) with 10-15 min of walking, but I may need to just cut the time down and take an extra day off or two. At the gym, it’d be no problem just subbing the bike/stairmonster for a day. Sigh
I also want to keep up my pull-ups, but we got rid of my pull-up/dip machine a few years ago. So, 2xweek I hope to swing by a park mid-run and do them on a playground. Today was my first day and it was sort of fun. 5 sets of 7-10 pull-ups interspersed with 10 push-ups. I will need to bring gloves next time. The only potential issue is one of the worst projects in town is across the street. I used to run by it from time to time, not regularly enough to feel like a target, but I have interrupted a few drugs deals. Anyhow, I felt OK today so we will see. (All school playgrounds are behind locked gates now.) Afterwards, I did a leg workout in our shed and got high on paint fumes. H is staining a bunch of paneling that will go in our attic next month. I hope it gets better, otherwise I’ll have to lift with the door open. I’m not crazy about that because I’m afraid of some creepy weirdo wandering up on me at o-dark thirty. We have seen evidence of people in our backyard before, so it’s not out of the realm of possibility.
But other than all of that, it felt good to be somewhat normal. I’m planning on this lasting 2 months. I can handle 2 months. I’m hoping it’s less, but if it winds up being more, I suppose I’ll deal with it. I already miss the gym peeps like crazy.
I’m so impressed with all of you! This cold still is really limiting me. (I swear, if I had a fever and wasn’t so congested, I’d start to wonder, as it’s been over two weeks.) We’re under a shelter-at-home order, but are allowed out for exercise, so I went for an hour long walk with one of my kids. I had planned on going longer, but at about 1/2 hour I started to get really tired, so we just turned around and came home. I’m done with this fatigue and wheezing. Stress level high + no real exercise = not a great combo for this mama. I have to remember that something is better than nothing.
Woke up at 6, it was 64 but raining. Went to the basement for 6ish miles on the Airdyne. A couple of hours later it was still 64 but sunny and some wind. Took an early "lunch break from working at home and went for a 2.5 mile run - in shorts! In Ohio! In March! Very fun.
The warm weather was short lived - has already dropped to 45 - but sure was nice and spring like!
This is my new routine. Wake up, 20ish minutes of walking or something light. Work for a few hours. Take a break 1-2 pm and walk or run. Finish up work. New normal. (other stuff in between of course!)
I got out this morning for my walk during a brief break in the rain and my work calls. I threw in a few jogging breaks to test out my knee. Most was maybe 2 minutes but most of them were a minute or so. Felt OK. I’ve lost running conditioning, but it felt good to pick up the pace from the walk. Got 5K done. Busy work day in corona-hell. Closing in on 2 weeks of getting all the Apple Watch rings closed! There were days it involved a lot of walks up and down the street, but it happened!
The plan - run a 10 mile out and back with 4 running buddies (practicing social distancing). Then it just happened. I was running out front and just decided to go for it and add on at the end. I texted them of my plan (we were no longer in sight each other) and got this text back:
“We will wait for you”
Four words that meant : we are here for you, we have your back, we are your friends, and so much more. The last 3 miles were hard (I had never run more than 10 miles before), but that kept me going…I love those ladies.
Ran the last 0.1 in the parking lot where we had gathered and they all were sitting in their respective cars. Windows were rolled down and they cheered me on. It was not what I planned when I signed up for a half, but it was better- it was perfect.
I’m not sure if my state is requiring closure of gyms, but the yoga and pilates studios where I have memberships are doing classes on line. I’ve loved the yoga classes that are live (on Zoom)–they’ve been really active classes and have given me a chance to get out of my anxious brain. Both studios also have classes that you can download (not live) and those have been great too. I’ve also been walking outside. I live in a small town that’s more rural than suburban and there are lots of conservation trails and a small pond where it’s possible to walk.
That is so wonderful, @FallGirl Great accomplishment- especially more or less by yourself! Glad you had the support at the finish line! I hope you threw your hands up in the air!
I ran (mostly) this morning. I just can’t do this on-the-bench thing any longer, so I hope I’m ok. I jogged the first mile then did run/walk for 3 more miles. I’ll be sore. I see the doc (well, the PA) on Wednesday. If I’m not OK, I’ll worry about it then.
Yay for FallGirl’s half marathon. It’s great to have folks rooting for you
At the end of my 2017 couch-2-5k community class, we ran a 5k together at same trail. (The instructor skipped the run, just cheered us on and held our coats). I ran with another classmate . At the finish line, I had to smile. The instructor and the faster classmates were cheering us. My daughter and hubby had run too, despite the blizzard that day, and they also helped cheer our finish. Happily we were not last - there were plenty of walkers behind us.
@MomofWildChild I smile almost every time you post. I’m kinda surprised you made it this long without running “mostly.”
Yesterday was more backyard gym time. For strength, I spent about 20-25 minutes establishing a 3-rep max with front squats and then maxed out with 1 reps. No PR’s. The WOD or HIIT was an AMRAP of thrusters, hang power cleans, box jumps, push press and air bike. Completed 5 rounds exactly on the nose. Core work was last. 3 sets of side planks with dumbbells, 50’ of “death march” (step, bend down, touch dumbbells to floor) and glute ham raises.
Today, I’m undecided as to whether I want to take the barbell and plates to the track and do a running/lifting workout or air bike/lifting workout. The main issue is the ? Hmm.
I wanna go back to the gym-gym. Texting people about workouts isn’t as much fun as the camaraderie of the gym.
Thanks, sushi. I did do pretty well- made it 5 weeks of the 6. After 43 years of running I generally can judge what I can and can’t do- but not always. I’ve run a couple of races on undiagnosed stress fractures back in the day. Not a pretty sight. If a doctor flat out tells me I can’t run, I generally listen. What made this particular stint difficult was the doc said no elliptical but I could do easy biking, and the biking bothered it more than the elliptical (especially with some arthritis in the knee, too). I decided that I would take the chance with the elliptical. If I have an xray Wednesday and the thing isn’t healed or something, I’ll know I was wrong.
I am in coronavirus hell with my job trying to navigate through all the state and city closures and other legal requirements in 29 states and I just needed to feel like a runner today!
@FallGirl Congratulations!!! That was such a nice and welcome read! I am so happy you completed your goal.
@Midwest67 Congrats on the PR! I know this is an especially hard time for you now, so enjoy the good moments.
H fixed up our shed gym yesterday. It looks great. He’s nicknamed it Coronagym. And he even surprised me by ordering a mountable pull-up bar. It should be delivered on Thursday. So no more working out in the projects’ playground. Yay!
Today I did a very slow 50 min run bookended by two 1 mile walks. I was only going to jog for 30 min but I felt better than I thought and the time passed by so quickly. Then I did Ab Ripper X and a 60 min yoga flow that focused on the hips. Rest of the day has been the usual weekend cleaning and Walmart. Older S came home for the week, so now I have two slaves (or I mean helpers right?) to get things done. I realized how thankful I am that we all get along and enjoy each others’ company. Being at home all the time would be much tougher otherwise. I tend to take my peaceful house for granted.
@sushiritto I know what you mean about missing the gym peeps. Id I saw any of them in a grocery store, I’d so be tempted to run up and give them a hug. I bet the reunion will be awesome though. That helps keep me focused
I walked my standard 4 miles (twice around the neighborhood) today. I am not eating as much as normal, but probably eating stuff that’s worse than normal. My husband and I are sitting here eating salads as I type this, because even during COVID19, we gotta be healthy.
Got out first thing this morning in the chilly gloom on my tired and sore legs (amazing how fast running conditioning goes away) for 3.6 run/walk miles. From my house is hillier than the rec path I was on yesterday. Heart rate quite high (aforementioned lack of conditioning) but it felt good to get out there and sweat a little.
@MomofWildChild, since you have had a few stress fractures, can I ask you this? My husband has a stress fracture of the knee. His doc. Has asked him to do a mri of the knee to make sure it is healed before he can be off crutches. Is this common?
