Individual language users operate within a system of meaning that is given to them from outside. Meaning is therefore not fully under the control of the individual language user. The meaning of a text is not neatly determined by authorial intention and cannot be unproblematically recreated by a reader.

^I know what you meant by posting that nobody is in control of what they say, but you said that we can't control what we LITERALLY SAY. Not what our words end up being construed to mean.

well, ummmm.... I'm starting to have doubts about whether I should have bumped this... not that the arguments aren't interesting and all :)

^ haha poseur just said "pretend" cause in reality, she does not pretend.

Fitting in is easier than you might think.

It's like when you see a parking space and on each side there are to SUV's, and you think to yourself, "there's no way I'm fitting in there," but you decide to go for it. You pull in your side mirrors, and after a bit of angling and eyeballing, you take the plunge, nice and slow, and sure enough, you fit in.

"you take the plunge, nice and slow, and sure enough, you fit in."

That's what she said.

Yes, yes that was the joke, congrats.... I was totally unaware that the line had sexual overtones... high five...

right back at you

Our school is really big so there is no one “popular” group.

Its mostly based on if you are taking honors or not classes

I fit into the “overachiever” asian group.

fitting in? just live life and get friends. why make things so complicated

I don’t want to sound cocky or anything, but I must admit that I hung out with the more “popular” group in high school. I was in the group that starting in 9th grade, we knew every other 9th grader from every other private school in the city, and we were all friends. I also was very sociable with all the other grades at my own school. It was a great experience to be able to hang out with such a great large group of people.

But I must say, at my school, most of the people who were “popular,” were also smart. That’s not to say that all the popular kids were smart, but a good number. Most of the really weird kids were just plain dumb (sorry if I sound mean!).

I have a ton of friends in my grade… we’re our own “group” of around 20-30 kids. There’s only 97 kids in my grade, and there are 3 “main” groups. I’m friendly with the other 2, but I have my main “group”. I still feel distant though >.> everyone in my grade just seems really immature (I’m in 9th). but I can still say my relationships are pretty good.

I have a good dozen friends that are seniors/juniors though (I am new to this school… it’s private from prek-12 so these kids known each other for YEARS). it’s nice having friends in different grades. =)
