Hi, I am looking into five-year dual degree programs leading to a BFA/MA dual degree in theater (performance/acting) and philosophy.

Are there any universities you guys know that allow this?
I have been searching and searching and I can only find the BU Dual Degree Program, which offers two degrees in theater and philosophy, and the Carnegie Mellon CHA program, but none of them offer a master's degree. They're more like double major programs.

I would like something like the Juilliard/Columbia program, or the Tufts/School of the Museum of Fine Arts joint dual-degree program that leads to a master's degree as well (within 4~5 years).

If any of you guys know any schools that offer this, please share the information with me! :)
THanks :)

It’s not the same, but it’s very feasible to double major in the BFA at NYU Tisch. I also don’t think that you’d be prepared for a master’s in philosophy with a degree in theatre. Most 5-year BA/MA programs are within the same subject.

My D1 went to Tufts, and I am a bit familiar with their 5 year dual degree programs. First, neither of them gives a Master’s degree -they are dual Bachelor’s degrees (the Art degree is misleading since it is from the “SMFA” - School of the Museum of Fine Arts, but it is a Bachelor’s, not an MFA). My D knew students in these programs, and it is extremely difficult and time-consuming to complete both degrees. In addition, the Bachelor’s degrees are not BFAs, which in themselves tend to be extremely time-consuming.

You probably can find 5-year programs where you can get a BA and and MA, in the same subject, as kyle says. Some schools have a 1-year Master’s in an academic subject, but again, they expect that your bachelor’s would be in the same area.

Keep asking and looking. It’s possible that through a university that has few gen eds and gives a lot of AP credit (most likely a large public school) that you could accelerate a BFA enough to get you to a Master’s and finish both in 5 years, but nothing like that has been discussed here since I’ve been reading these boards. I also feel inclined to mention that even though you want a BFA in Theatre and a Master’s in Philosophy before you even begin college, you might change your mind over time. Take the first step, and then see what happens. Good luck!

Wow, thanks guys for the help.

I’m probably going to challenge myself to get a double major
Wish me luck!
