DD is in love with Flagler college and was accepted. We only received $3k on merit and we get nothing from fafsa. I can not swing the $40k bill. Any advice how to ask for more and appeal?? Desperate here. I just don’t have what fafsa says I have.
Your thread title says “OOS financial aid”. Flagler is a private university. It does not differentiate between in and out of state students.
FAFSA is a financial aid form. It doesn’t award money. But by completing it, your student is eligible for the $5500 Direct Loan as a freshman.
The total cost of attendance is $41,000 or so. Subtract $8500 (direct loan and the $3000 in aid) and you get $32,500. How far is that from being affordable?
Did you fill out the Flagler Net Price Calculator? If so is it consistent with what you achieved ? If it shows lower cost, make an appointment with the aid office and go over the numbers. Note the school does not state it meets need.
How is your Fafsa EFC related to the total cost ? They don’t appear to use other forms so my guess is they are using the Fafsa #.
Otherwise just let you daughter know you can’t afford it. Don’t crush yourself financially.
There’s lots of schools where she can have a wonderful experience and certainly some that are more affordable, perhaps very affordable depending on your state of residence and her statistics.
Another option, depending on the delta, is perhaps a local part time job, to help meet budget.
Good luck.
The number that FAFSA has given you is most definitely not what FAFSA thinks you have.
One last thing - the federal government knows the EFC may leave gaps.
Flagler has a small endowment. The fact that they only use Fafsa and don’t ask for a deeper picture of your income and assets is a bit telling (to me).
If you go to their common data set section h1 and h2, they awarded $7,668,440 to 1548 kids in need aid - which you don’t qualify for. That’s less than $5k for each recipient. It is not a school that has the ability to help most in a large way.
Truth is a lot of kids don’t like their dream school. Perhaps Flagler would be great. Perhaps your daughter would have a bad roommate or professors she didn’t bond with.
Nowhere is perfect and lots of schools can be great with her. Why it’s best not to fall in love.
I strongly suggest you find a school you can afford (we can help) and go from there. Or perhaps you’ve already applied to others that will work.

I don’t count the $5500 simply because we have to pay they back and then some. I’d rather take the money from my home equity. It’s still a big hit. She isn’t getting into the state schools here in NY. We have. A place in FL but it isn’t our primary residence. I will try to call Flagler and see what they can do. I won’t hold my breath.
Tell us her stats. Maybe we have ideas.
If you have two homes, you’re unlikely to get need aid anywhere although Flagler didn’t ask for a css.
If you are looking at low cost, run the net price calc at Hofstra and Bradley for private. Ogelthorpe in Atlanta and Hendrix in Arkansas May match SUNY B tuition as might U Maine. Depending on her stats (if you share) there may be other affordable.
Western Carolina and Southern Illinois ( no OOS tuition) are low cost OOS.
Obviously it’s your right as to what to do with home equity etc but, and no offense to Flagler, but do you really want to hurt your finances for them ?
We are here to help if you want it. Lay out the stats and we can come up with ideas.
Here are SUNY stats by school.

Thank you for this. She has applied to SUNY New Paltz (rejected) and SUNY Cortland. She was accepted by Lynn U, Sienna, and Jacksonville U. She is a solid 85 average student with numerous volunteer experiences and work experience. She is test optional. It is what it is.
I’ll try again. Your place of residence doesn’t matter at Flagler which is a private college. Students from in and out of state are charged the same amount.
But that second home equity would be reported as an asset on the FAFSA. It’s the primary home equity that isn’t on the FAFSA.
Are any of these affordable?
Can you swing $33k ? York College of PA is showing $33k COA with a 3.0 GPA test optional or submitting the 20.
Not sure of Western Carolina stats but it would be low-mid 20s in cost.
Why not a community college ? Or Buffalo State or Old Westbury look to be the easiest. Again not sure of admission dates.
You also need to look at where your student will get the supports they need to succeed.
Did your transition plan folks help you at all with your college list?
We toured Flagler. They use some of their endowment to keep costs lower for ALL students. Their COA is in the $40,000 a year range. For a small private school, that is a decent cost of attendance. And with a $3000 merit award, that means $37,000. I doubt you will find many small private universities at that price point.
Got it. Can you tell me more about this Ease grant?
Flagler is coming in as the cheapest even when they each gave us good merit amounts.
You must be a resident of Florida to get the Ease Grant…which is funded by the state of florida. You are not a resident. It also appears to be a need based grant, and you said you didn’t qualify for need based aid.
Doses your student have any pending SUNY applications out? That would be your cost savings option.
@sybbie719 any suggestions for this student?
She is waiting on SUNY cortland - we really wanted her in Florida. I’m retiring in a year planning to move there and her sister attends Embry Riddle Aeronautical University as a junior.
I hope it all works out.
