This just came in through the Yale email system at 3pm.

Yale University Health Services has only received delivery of half of the seasonal flu vaccine that was ordered. Therefore, the remaining seasonal flu clinics are on hold until we receive our remaining shipments.

ARGH! My son came down with the swine flu over the weekend just as the vaccine arrived at Yale. He’s quarantined in his room and his FroCo brought him things yesterday and he’s signed up for the sick meals, but they haven’t started yet, and since he took to his bed monday morning, he has essentially been at the mercy of the kindness of folks. it is so frustrating not being able to do anything from a distance and there doesn’t seem to be a way to order flu supplies from a drugstore and have them delivered. He ran out of cough drops Sunday and was very miserable hacking all night. It’s very sad as he has had to miss his orchestra and ensemble concerts, his a capella concert, etc. etc. I would have gone to get him on Sunday but we were still hoping it was just a brief cold. I fear that guy suitemates are not like girl suitemates, and they all went to breakfast and lunch without asking my poor lad if there was anything he needed…

So sorry to hear about your son stringkeymom. My S didn’t get a H1N1 shot (ran out of the first shipment) and we are just hoping for the best now. This is such a stressful time too, with finals, papers, etc. I’m so sorry your son has to miss his performances. My S hasn’t been hit too badly with illness so far (bad cold) but I worry that a second wave of flu is hitting. Hang in there!

Stringkeymom, so sorry to hear your S is sick. I hope (first of all) that he gets well soon and second, that this first semester of college ends uneventfully! DD flies home in nine days…

Hope your son is feeling better, stringkeymom.

Is the H1N1 vaccine available on campus now? The Health Services website is still reporting that none is available. If someone has more up-to-date, information, could you please post a link?

Thanks everyone for the good wishes! I brought DS home when they put him on the flu list and it was clear he wasn’t bouncing back. It seemed the kindest thing to do for his suite and easier to make sure he was keeping hydrated and had enough flu supplies. I am so happy we live near enough to make this an option. As of this writing, he is still running a low grade fever and has some coughing, had to miss all of his recitals, but I am hoping he will be able to take his first final tomorrow.

The day DS was put on the flu list, Health Services announced they would be making H1N1 flu shots available to students starting Dec. 11 (yesterday). My cousin, Tom Frieden, is head of CDC and the whole family ganged up on him at Thanksgiving about the delays in getting the vaccine out. He said, “No matter how much I yell at them, the cultures won’t grow any faster.” It’s a relief to know Yale’s students can get the shots now.

SKM - glad to hear you intervened. As a junior, DD is in a suite with one other young woman who has her own room. That made the whole flu thing easier.

Now I know your son would not agree, but it was better getting the flu now than in the middle of the semester. Kids were excused from classes when they had a fever, but once they were cleared, it was back to business. I know DD had to really work very hard to catch up on assignments. I asked if she could hand one or two in later, but she said then she would just be jammed up on the things that were being presently assigned.

I am curious. I know your son is a very accomplished musician - does he participate in any of the lesser orchestras? Did he have a concert Monday?

So, for next year, when we are advising new parents, here are some things to add to the list. Make sure you student has a stash of drinks in their suite - gatorade, something like that. Always have some cash on hand. DD’s roommate was willing to buy things for her, but DD was low on cash and was concerned her roommate couldn’t use debit card. Actually, it wasn’t a problem. Buy a gift card to Starbucks or Blue State or somewhere like that and tell you child they are to keep it in case they need the roommate to do something above and beyond.

worknprogress–thanks for the suggestion! I returned DS to campus yesterday in time for his first final and picked up gift cards at Blue State for his FroCo and the roommate who picked up a big package for him.

DS reports the auditorium was full of kids coughing and sniffing. We followed the flu nurse’s very helpful suggestion to stay in for 36-48 hours once symptoms subsided, which, as worknprogress points out, would not have been possible with classes in session. Roommate was also sneezing and went to sleep early. Alas.

About the ensembles and concerts: DS is not in Davenport Pops (I think that was the Monday concert) but is concertmaster of Jonathan Edwards College Philharmonic which, on Wednesday, premiered a composition by the son of CC’s own Hunt!

I’m happy to hear your son is doing better, stringkeymom. I must admit I’m a little jealous of families who live close enough to go to campus if necessary.

So, wisedad, thanks to you for the reassurance that Yale has good programs in place to help students who are sick.

wjb: My dd got her H1N1 shot on campus on Friday the 11th. I’m not sure if she signed up in advance or what the process was.

Did anyone else have a child very excited about hearing Tony Blair speak?

I’m wondering whether your D had an adverse reaction to the shot. They are available now without appointment, but I am reluctant to have my son get it and feel lousy during an exam!

And yes, I think my son is hearing Tony Blair speak, too. Apparently the security is very tight.

stringkeymom, I’m sorry to hear your son was sick; I take it he had to miss the JECP performance? If so, that’s too bad. My son was very happy with the performance of his piece–we haven’t heard it yet, but he’s (supposedly) bringing the video tomorrow.

hunt, It made me sad when I saw that you could not be there for the debut of your son’s piece. I felt sad when I could not attend the DPops concert on Monday…probably the first musical performance I have missed in my daughter’s life! But as I remind myself “it is not about me” and “root and wings” but still YOUR SON COMPOSED A PIECE THAT WAS PERFORMED!..I would kill him if he did not bring the video. Have a wonderful break with your son and whatever your tradition is this holiday season, may it be full of joy.
