One of my top choices for college is in Colorado and I'm from NY. It would clearly be my first choice if it weren't for the distance. My question it how much of a hassle is it to fly? I don't think homesickness will be a big issue, it just seems like an inconvenience to have to take a flight to get to/from college. Money isn't really an issue. My dad is all for it if thats were I think I want to go but my mom doesn't want me being so far away.
Any thoughts/ experiences you have will be greatly appreciated!

I’m from California (within easy driving distance of LAX and a larger regional airport), and went to two schools in different regions of the country. IMO flying to school is very easy if the college only takes one or two flights to reach. The only hassle is shipping clothes and other needed items but even that’s pretty easy. Don’t let the flying scare you away from a school that’s an otherwise good fit.

as @whenwhen suggests, it’s not a matter of how far but how much aggravation along the way: how far are you from the airport at either end? how will you get to and from the airport at each end? do you have to do layovers? what airline will you fly (they’re not all the same)? what will your costs be? Traveling to Denver or Colorado Springs from New York state could be a 4 hour nap or a 14 hour ordeal. And then there’s the weather and whether or not you like flying, being stuck in a holding pattern, popping ears, screaming babies, no leg room, etc. Of course, you could have these same problems getting from NY state to Boston. The length of the flight isn’t the issue.

Don’t think of it in terms of distance, but time to get there and the cost of flying. I don’t think a few hour flight is more of a hassle than hours of driving, myself. Sure you will go home less at that distance if money is an issue. If it isn’t then you wouldn’t be coming home any more often if you are closer, you will be too busy and have your own activities at college you are involved with. My kid went from west coast to east coast for school. We Fedex ground delivery her stuff initially. She shared a small storage unit for her stuff over the summer, boxes and a bike. I also enjoyed visiting and having my own vacation in the area a few times. Tell you mom she can do that too.

@whenhen and @jkeil911 nail it from a shipping stuff and flying hassle. Flying is many times though easier than a five hour drive. The other thing is that you’ll likely store items over the summer - not usually costly at all.
