Fom community college to a UC to medical school?

Is it possible?
Does it occur often?
I've always wondered how someone who is at community college can perform any 'researches' to put on their application when they're applying to medical school. How do you research or volunteer when you're not at a big name college?

it happens enough to not be a big deal.

Med schools don’t consider CC as rigorous as 4 years so they don’t like to see prereqs taken at CC. If you are a science major and do well after you transfer, it is a nonissue. if you’re a nonscience major and ace your CC BCPM courses and mess up after you transfer it looks like you can only handle softball classes. End story, do well and it doesn’t matter.

Research doesn’t necessarily have to be done at your institution (it’s just most convenient) but you can do it at a research hospital or another place. In the end, research is **very **important for top tier med schools but it looks good for other schools.

Volunteering shouldn’t be an issue because there are so many opportunities, in fact it should be easier to do it at CC because after you transfer, you won’t have as much time to get involved.

haha I made the exact same thread a few years ago. Yeah its possible, as long as you do well after you transfer. If you do well at CC but fail once you transfer, they’ll just think your CC was easy and you’ll lose all your credibility. Other from that, it is extremely possible to get to med school from CC.

I’m applying as a math major or chemical engineering. How will I be able to find research? For volunteering, are they just looking for your average teenager volunteering at the hospital, or something more?

Please and thank you!

Volunteering in a hospital isnt necessarily a bad thing, but its definitely average. Too average. I would suggest joining some volunteering organization that you are passionate about so if you ever have to explain it to anyone, you’ll be able to talk about it more passionately. For research, start with your professors. They will be glad to point you in the right direction. Look online for research opportunities, go to the career center, or use your connections.

This guy did it! He was really nice; I met him, and he told me all about the MCAT for some reason.

Alot of transfer students looking to get into medical school, stay an extra year to do research.

"It’s fitting that the life of Josh Biddle, top graduating senior at the
University of California, Berkeley, would read like the lyrics of “Amazing Grace.”

During high school in Marin County, Calif., and at a subsequent boarding program for troubled teens in Colorado, he was lost. But while driving a tractor on his Great-aunt Velma’s farm, finding his niche in science at City College of San Francisco and transferring to UC Berkeley, he was found.

This Sunday (May 16), the 28-year-old integrative biology major will share his story with thousands of his peers at UC Berkeley’s Commencement Convocation. There, he will receive the coveted University Medal. His 100-year-old Great-aunt Velma plans to attend. The award comes with a $2,500 scholarship that Biddle will use to pay his way to Kenya, where he will do clinical outreach on behalf of the Ray of Hope Foundation. In September, he starts medical school at UC San Francisco…"

My friend did LA community college, transferred into UCLA, and now is at Stanford Medical School.

I had some questions about this.
if you are transfering from JC to UC and trying to complete the pre med requirements at UC how would you go about doing that if you have to take lower division sciences including calculus and physics and org chem at JC? Do people think its better to major in something else and transfer and fulfill the requirements when you are at the UC?

^^You should take most, if not all, of your science and pre-med pre-reqs at a JC.

To be honest, science classes will not vary that much from the difficuly found at UC’s. For example, my friend at UCLA and I at a CCC both took Organic Chemistry last semester. We would often study together and are both quite dedicated students. By the end of the semester it was pretty clear to both of us that 1) His exams were much easier and 2) I understood the material much better than he did. That said, I recieved an A as did he.

As mentioned earlier, just work hard. As long as you are successful at BOTH your CCC and UC you will have no problem getting into med school.
