Food Options

Without question the food is terrific!! I'll talk about the Heilman Dining Center first, because that is the main dining facility on campus. It has computers for students and three main eating areas. It is a huge facility. There are chandeliers that have speakers builit into them for music throughout the day and there are flat screen tvs on the walls, usually with the news, sports, or the menu for the day, on the screen.

I would rank our dining hall food as a 9 out of 10, with 10 being the best. The the food options are so diverse there and the quality is great. If there is something that is not your favorite, there are definitely going to be choices that fit your taste bud. If students have suggestions for changes they want to see, there is a board called UR Heard, where students submit suggestions or complaints and the answers from the staff are posted on the board in a timely manner.

The first area you hit when entering the servery area is the dessert station. The desserts are all made from scratch right there. There are cookies, cakes, pies, baked breads, pastries, you name it. There is also frozen yogurt and ice cream, so the temptations are all there.

There is a pasta station with different pastas and sauces and on Monday and Wednesday night there is a specialty pasta that they cook right in front of you in what they call "display cooking." Dishes in the past include shrimp scamp and chicken marsala. Continuing with an Italian theme, right next to the pasta station is a brick oven, from which pizza and occassional calzones and brick oven nachos are made. The pizza is pretty good, but it's even better when it comes right out of the oven.

Yet another station has burgers made to order, and other grilled and fried items. For breakfast and brunch you can get omlets made here as well as other types of eggs. There is a station called "Grains and Green" which has vegetarian options and a Latin American station that has all the fixings for you to make tacos, quesadillas, and burritos.

A unique aspect of the dining hall is "Hemispheres" which is a mongolian grill options. Select from an assortment of fresh vegetables, meat, such as pork, steak, chicken, or shrimp and mix it with noodles, rice, and different sauces and the chefs with mix your creation on the girll. You can't go wrong here. And if you can't make up your mind about what you want, there is a premade special of the week as well.

"Bruce's Kitchen" is another station and it has comfort food options such as steak, chicken parm, fried chicken, fish, ribs, etc with the corresponding fixings. The selections change daily. The campus deli is very popular. It is basically like an oncampus subway where you can create your own subs and there is a panini bar at lunch hour and on Wed nights with some great out-of-the-ordinary ingredients like basil, avocado, roasted red pepper, mozzarella cheese, and prosciutto. It is very good and very popular. I recommend the paninis!

But that's not it... There are two salad bars and two soups served daily. There are waffle makers that make waffles with a spider logo in the middle. Go Spiders! There is an assortment of cereals and in the Spring Semester of each schoolyear, the students vote on the cereals for the next schoolyear.

Other Dining Options:

There is The Cellar, which is an on-campus bar and grill which is open for dinner from 5pm - 1am on Thursday and Friday and til 12am on each of the other 5 days of the week. There is a bar for students who are 21 or older and there is a take out option as well. On Fridays there is a live band and the atmosphere is great. It feels like you are off campus, when in reality you are not. It is almost completely student run with the law school bartenders, waiters/waitresses, kitchen staff, etc. I recommend the burgers!

If you're on the run, Tyler's Grill (or "The Pier) could be your stop. It serves wraps, sandwiches, burgers, salads, fries and fast food items. It is open 6 days a week and along, with The Cellar, is located in the Tyler Haynes Commons, which is the large building overlooking the Westhampton Lake on campus.

Freshens is a small place serving smoothies, frozen yogurt, and cold drinks. 8:15 at Boatwright is a coffee shop that is located in the library. It brews Starbucks coffee and is open until 1am.

There are two convenience stores. Everything Convenience (ETC) and The Dean's Den are the two stores. One is located on each side of campus. ETC has a greater variety of food items, and also has little things such laundry detergent, batteries, and toiletries. You are able to use your "dining dollars" at both convenience store locations.
