how is the food? and are there special events in the dining halls like, for instance, valentines treats day or something? best places to eat?

I was wondering the same thing. from everything you read, they really dont say much about the food.

The food is nothing to brag about, but I don't have much to complain about. The cookies in Lenoir are some of the best I have ever had.
They do have special events pretty often, at least a couple of times a month. Today they featured one of their chefs who made some pretty good pasta with asparagus, with some steak and shrimp.

Now the campus dining services may not be anything special, but you can find pretty much anything you want on Franklin Street. I think my favorite restaurants on Franklin are Buns (the best burgers ever), 35 Chinese (great all you can eat chinese food, and they have free delivery), and Peppers Pizza.

Packerfan89, you just made me one elated Tar Heel-to-be :D I visited the campus once but I didn't see the Chinese place! Now my dream school is officially perfect.

ahahah... the chinese food pushes him over the top... LOL

as far as brand-name food, i'm almost positive there are on-campus starbucks, jamba juice, and chick-fil-a's (yes, yes and more yes. haha)

There's a starbucks in Ram's Head, and a Subway in the bottom of Lenoir and Ram's Head Market. Ram's Head is the dining hall closest to South Campus, next to Kenan Stadium, and Lenoir is the place on North Campus.
Bottom of Lenoir has a Chick-fil-a, a mexican place, a japanese place, pizza, mini-burgers or burgers depending on the time of year, and Mediterranean Deli. They also do this thing where they have one stand that will rotate in different restaurants on different days of the week. This semester, its an Indian place 2 days, a bbq place 2 days, and a jamaican place the other day.

I'm I freshman, but I've figured out the food here. :P
Although I have yet to eat from Gumby's...

Nothing beats Gumby's Pokey Stix after a night out. Seriously. Thursdays is big a-ss Thursday, where it's like ten bucks for a "big a-ss pokey." I can't remember the dimensions, but the first time I saw that beautiful white boat of a box headed down my hallway to my dorm room I couldn't do anything but clap my hands.

Now, I know that it sheds a bad light on my school to say phrases like "after a night out," but man. packerfan89, get yourself some pokeys. With ranch.

I am a hard working student! Someone on here can vouch! The only reason why I'm posting on here so often recently is because I'm not in school, I'm waiting to leave for my study abroad program!

!!!

is there a zaxby's??

Nah, but there's a "Cluck U"

Cloying is a hard working student I can vouch!!

Me on the other hand... :-p

I'll get myself the pokeys, but I have to pass on the ranch. I can't stand ranch. I know that might get me some strange looks, but oh well. Cloying, where are you going that starts school a month later than here?

Eh, food's alright. It's not great, not terrible. But there is some chain stuff on campus (subway, chick-fil-a, jamba juice) if you get tired of Lenoir or Ram's Head (which I'm sure you will).

packerfan, I know people doing programs in Spain and Australia who either haven't started classes or haven't left yet. Talk about a longgg winter break. And an incentive to study abroad. :)

But hey, the food on campus is pretty good. I have health freak tendencies so my one complaint is that there aren't enough healthy options. The Rams Head Dining Hall salad bar, especially, gets old. But Lenoir salads are always tasty. Pretty much everything is passably tasty. The buffet style will get you that freshman 15 FAST though, so be warned hahaha. I can speak from experience. They always offer good desserts. Oh, and one more thing, don't overestimate how many meals you need! You WILL have extra.

Wait ONE more thing...they do kind of do special events, at least in Rams. Once we had a 70s night complete with paper mache decorations and a DJ. Oh, baby.

Last year for Valentine's day they had fresh raspberries and strawberries and... a chocolate fountain. And roses at every table.

Seriously.

Super Bowl dinner (I think it was like the Thursday before) was pretty awesome this year. There were like 3 different types of chicken wings and my fav: FRIED CLAMS.

And roses at every table.

yeah my boyfriend tried to give me one of those roses. i was like, "that doesn't count!!!!"

When I went to college I discovered Pokey Sticks and beer. If you want to avoid weight gain in college, you should really avoid both of those.

Yeah and actually around Thanksgiving this year, they dimmed the lights and decorated the tables. I didn't imagine that, did I?

No you didn't imagine that. The dim lights didn't really make sense. Maybe they were trying to save energy? :P

The food at the dining halls gets progressively worse as the semester goes on. I am a vegetarian and I feel that there are limited options. If you get sick of the dining halls you can go to Franklin and find almost anything you want. I would recommend Cosmic Cantina, Chipotle, Spanky's, Gumby's, Noodle's, Asia Cafe, Franklin Street Pizza and Pasta, and also P.T.'s grill.
