I applied to Brown as a music major. I play the trumpet, piano, and French horn. I'd love to continue all three in college, as well as learn some new instruments.

I sing, and I only applied to two B.M. programs: University of Miami and Oberlin Conservatory. The rest only offer a B.A. in Music.

Favorite Pieces (Vocal and otherwise):
"Sleep" - Eric Whitacre (choral)
"Vocalise" - Rachmaninov (vocal)
"Rusalka's Song to the Moon" - Dvorak (vocal)
"Apres un Reve" - Faure (vocal)
Scriabin's Piano concerto in F# minor, Op. 20

speaking of horns, america is the only place where the french horn is actually called the french horn whereas in every other country, it's just horn. isn't like some international music organization thinking of changing it so it's always just horn?

I forgot to include the Hansen Symphony #2. It's brilliant.

most people call it horns now. i dont think many actually call it french horns anymore =D

Ehhh...so many kids play the violin. i bet like a fifth of all the applicants to ivies play a musical instrument, and half of those play the violin. It just ain't as uncommon as it used to be lol...but violin is so cool...in my opinion, the only other instruments that compare with the violin are the cello, flute, and oboe =)

Too many play the flute, too. there aren't enough oboe, bassoon, or viola players. cello's on the fair side. I really want to play the cello (Saint-Saens cello concerto no.1 in A minor is amazing) but sadly, I play the violin just like every other asian. How good do you have to be at an instrument to have it play a role in the admissions decision? Pre-Julliard/Curtis level?

What summer music programs have any of you attended?

I love how every decent musician that I know talks about where they've been like Luzerne, Encore Coda, etc. and I'm just like... no... I've never been to music camp... Although one summer before 9th grade, I went to the Prince Music Theater in Philly to be in the summer institution pit orchestra for the show peeps. We did the West Side Story. That really doesn't count since it's theater and acting.

I haven't done any specific summer music programs, but my orchestra has toured. We toured Spain a couple of years ago; it was pretty fun.
And I did Harvard Summer School a few years back and i joined their orchestra, but the following years i didn't do HSSP. However the summer school orchestra conductor kept calling me and telling me to join it, and i thought if i did it it "may" have some advantage in admissions (yeah...i know, what was i thinking?!) ...lol needless to say it got me nowhere...deferred EA!

ive gone to Interlochen, Eastern Music Festival, and Brevard

I've studied drums for 7 years, and am drumline captain (second one for the school playing quads instead of snare, and first female captain). I thought about going to Berklee College of Music for drums or recording, but its in Boston and I was wasn't sure how I'd rank compared to real music prodigies.

And the price tag was too high :(

Shost: did you join the actual Harvard Symphony Orch or was it a summer orch for the summer school kids and students who stayed for the summer? I live around Penn, maybe I could get myself into the Symphony Orch...

I would love to go to summer school at some of the Ivies and top tier colleges but they're soooo expensive (for me anyway). Do they offer scholarships or grants?

hey wolfstar...you must be in all-state with me (I'm assuming you're from Ohio and that you are in Cincinnati right now)

The conductor is crazy...

have any of you heard prokofiev's 3rd piano concerto?
it's orgasmic.

i did harvard summer school orchestra which was like an orchestra for summer school kids and other ppl around the harvard community who wanted to join (only several harvard undergraduates were in it). the orchestra wasn't that great...of course, i heard that the official harvard orchestra is the oldest in the country and they must be insanely good...i bet a lot of ppl there are fit for juliard but turned it down for Harvard

Ahhhhhh I wish I were that good. I originally wanted to start the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto in E minor but I got a whole bunch of music (Lalo - Symphonie Esp, Mendelssohn E-moll, Bruch No. 1 G-moll and a couple of Mozart concertos) shipped to me from China and he picked the Bruch Concerto No. 1 in G minor for me to start. Agh too many double stops.

i haven't considered orchestras for college yet (im a jr)
this thread caught my attention, shostakovich is my fav composer:)

im actually playing gypsy airs (ziguernweisen ?) for an all-state audition in two months, but i am by no means up to the normal tempo. at the pace i'm practicing, i need about another year to get to get it sounding decent :(

strappleberry:
how long have you been playing violin? i really want to play gypsy airs but i dont think i'm ready yet. i played Bruch and have been stuck on Wieniovski (however u spell it)for too long, but is Gypsy Airs significantly harder than those pieces?

wow no one plays the cello raises hand yay cello! It's a gorgeous instrument and I love it. I don't own one though, so I probably won't continue in college. :(
