For all you Muscians

~just wondering what schools you applied to and if you’re going to continue’em in college…it’s like ive been playing the violin for almost 15 years and i’m all state and everything, but i definately don’t want to go pro but don’t want to drop it either…are any of you guys going to do orchestra/band? Personally I’d LOVE to join the Harvard Radcliffe Orchestra or something…it just seems like i somehow know as if im gunna quit my instrument in college (almost everyone i know goes into college a music prodigy and leaves it having dropped it) but i dont’ want to yet…any thoughts?

by the way, my favorite pieces are:

Shostakovich’s Symphony #5 4th Movement
Gypsy Airs =) (even though i could never ever play it)
Czardas
Pictures at an Exhibition
Beethoven Symphony #7

umm ive played violin for 13 years or so....im not sure if i want to continue it. most college orchestras have a lot of time dedication. my really good friend is in the harvard top orchestra which is like 2 or 3 times a week. with practicing and everything im not sure if i will be able to handle it =D

my all time favorite piece is mahler 1 =D

what concerto are u playing? i just finished sibelius

I play clarinet (7th year right now). I'm definitely continuing my music studies in college. It'll most likely be merely participation in the school orchestra. I've applied to the conservatory at Oberlin and Bard as well.

I don't know about my favorite pieces. there are too many awesome works out there.

I play violin. I'm applying to music programs and double-degree programs at Bard, Indiana, BU, Harvard/NEC, Vanderbilt, CIM, and Yale. Yes, that's too many auditions! Too late now...

how's that for a brief list?

eewwwww i hate mahler 3 =) we played it in our youth orchestra last year...TERRIBLE haha, we played mahler 1 the year before...amaazing, that was our best repertoire that year, mahler 1, shosty 5, prokofieff 5, rimsky korsakov russian easter and brahms 1 =D

How incredibly foolish of me to leave out the Brahms Piano Quintet, the Copland Sextet, the Ravel Trio, and the Mozart Clarinet Quintet. Also, the Rite of Spring and Dumbarton Oaks.

Eew, I'm supposed to play Shostakovich's Symphony #5 starting tomorrow for All-State and I really don't like it.

I'm auditioning at Lawrence and Oberlin...I'm still torn between academics and music and would love to do both!

I play bassoon (7 years), lots of saxes and piano. I'm probably going to play in the school orchestra wherever I go (Columbia is my first choice).

Favorite pieces? My favorite bassoon piece is the Previn sonata, and overall I absolutely love Holst's The Planets, Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue and Saint-Saens' Dance Bacchanale. I've also enjoyed the movements I've played of the Firebird Suite (the Berceuse and Finale) and the Pines of Rome is great too. I haven't really had an opportunity to play much real orchestra lit. I go to All-State orchestra each year and play in FSU's top orchestra in their summer camps, but my local youth orchestra is terrible (I played one year, then quit because it was just depressing).

ohhh man wolfstar you are sooo lucky to be playing symphony #5, the 4th movement sounds really good. listen to a CD... but it is pretty hard to play...two years ago in Mass. All State we played Shosty #5, but last year it was all contemporary stuff, except a Rachmoninov symphony #1, yeah... I really really hope we play something cool this year

aren't those dual music degrees really hard to get in? I dunno, i think i want to go into economics or something~ ehh...whatever best of luck to you guys!

9 years here on violin. yea, we're playing the shostakovich no.5 and stravinsky's firebird (1919 version) at regional orch in pa. we did pictures at an exhibition, brahms symphony no. 1, 4th movement, and offenbach's orpheus in the underworld at districts.

bassoon? hardly see them around anymore.
Piano -13 years. I hope to play in college- just for fun probably. Not going to audition for anything.
All time Favorite piece- Chopin Ab Polonaise (just too fun to play)

Brahms 1 in a district orchestra? Wow. Where do you live?

they only did 4th movement....=D

Brahms 2 seems to be the piece to play in my area these couple of years....LaGuardia HS played it last year (it was pretty bad, lol), Mannes Prep Division did it last year, NY Youth Symphony and Juilliard PreCollege Orchestra are playing this year, Kinhaven Summer Camp did it this past summer....awesome piece...soooo gorgeous.....not fit for youth orchestras tho.

brahms 1 is cool too.

i live around philly, so our district area has some kids who have teachers who are in the philly orch, lots of curtis and temple grads, etc. but seriously, it was only the 4th movement and i didn't think it was that hard. i think i listened more to the recording than i actually practiced; i'm an auditory/visual movement learner when it comes to music. can't sightread music for my life without first hearing it.

there are other districts that we combine with for regionals and states who have kids from curtis and temple who are still in high school to compete with.

I play Oboe (5 years), Alto Sax (7 years), Tenor Sax (4 years) and English Horn (3 years). I was principal oboe last year at an honor youth philharmonic in Los Angeles and love classical music, with Oboe being my strongest instrument. I was accepted to Columbia ED and I know a ton of musicians who were also accepted ED, so it seems the performing arts are taking a larger role in admissions. I love to sight read music and am fairly good at doing so.

I love Shosta 5, the Aladdin Suite (not the movie, but a highly difficult orchestra piece with 4 orchestras playing at the same time at different tempos, key signatures and melodies), Overture to Candide, New World Symphony, Pictures at an Exhibition, Hary Janos Suite and many others.

Current Repertoire for Philharmonic:
Overture to Candide
Lincoln Portrait
Vaughn Williams Tuba Concerto
Hansen 2nd Symphony (romantic)

I bet you play that oboe solo in New World. :)

Does the smiley face mean you're tormenting jaug1? If not, you should know it's an english horn solo...

Yeah, I am currently playing the English Horn solo in my High School orchestra this semester. I love that piece...for obvious reasons :)

Aha. Go EH!
