As much as I don't like the decision to do away with them, I found that I did want to buy a couple of these. If you also want to, you may want to act fast, because a notice of this just went out to parents of kids who are graduating.

Yes, I would say act fast as well, because they have been for sale for awhile. We bought some about a year ago already, so I’m not sure what their supply is looking like currently.

^Lol, I thought this was going to be a post about alumni now being able to buy Yale vanity license plates- taking the window decal concept to a whole new level :D.

(Our state has over 25 different plates to choose from including one that features our state flagship.)

At $25 each for stoneware plates I’m sure they can make more. It is interesting how easy it is to find the antique 1933 blue and white Wegwood Yale plates on ebay but I don’t ever see these newer Yale plates listed.

Mine came yesterday, I ordered one for S2 and one for his girlfriend (two different RC’s). They are in amazingly good shape! I was worried that they might have been well worn, but not at all, definitely fit to display on a wall or in a shadow box or something…now the challenge is to come up with something creative to do with them…

I ordered 8 (because I’m nuts) figuring I’ll give them to DD for her first apartment when she graduates (she’s a rising junior). Outrageously expensive, but compared to the tuition…

I ordered 8 TD plates. When the Yale Dining person called to confirm shipping arrangements, she mentioned that Yale Dining has commissioned new plates with the old designs because the orders are running so high. She said the money received is helping to defray their losses from students stealing plates as keepsake/momentos over the years. I told her I admired Yale Dining’s enterprise!

Anyway the plates arrived yesterday and my TD daughter is very happy–they are very nice indeed.

Ours just came. They look brand new to me. I would actually prefer some that were a bit worn, so I could think I might have eaten off them back in the day.

Just curious - after ordering, did you get a phone call for payment info immediately? Or did it take a few days? I ordered last week, but haven’t gotten a call. Granted, it was a busy week at Yale, followed by the holiday weekend, but I was just wondering. Thanks!

I don’t remember anything like those plates at all. I am positive that in four years of eating in the Saybrook dining room, I never once saw a plate ringed with stylized blue pictures of Harkness Quadrangle architectural features, featuring Harkness Tower, of course, and both “Saybrook” and “Branford” written in the middle. Branford sucked! No one would have wanted to eat off their skanky tourist plates.

I’m not saying some of the colleges didn’t have special plates. Maybe even Saybrook. But not those ugly things.

Hunt, when did those plates come into being? Do you remember eating off such things?

I’m pretty sure we had them in JE in the late 70’s. But I don’t trust my memory. Could it be that these plates were used for things like Fellows’ Dinners, but not in the regular dining hall?

My daughter definitely remembers them from TD before they were retired a couple of years ago. Perhaps they are “newer” patterns that older alums either don’t remember or didn’t use?

Just got my plates! I ordered four - going to give two to DH and two to DS for Christmas this year. Was going to order four for son, but figured that he’d inherit the ones from Dad - eventually I think they look good!

I got mine last week; I ordered 8. Six came shrinkwrapped, and two more sitting on top with a lonely piece of bubble wrap separating them. Amazingly only one was broken. They were very nice when I called them (though she seemed to be contemplating sending me a sticker to send back the broken one; what, she thinks I’m trying to scam them out of one more plate?) Anyway, hope to receive the replacement soon.
