For Candidates and mids/grads ONLY

Evening all-

Here is a thread where you, as candidates, can ask questions to mids and grads about plebe summer, the ac year, sports, whatever. If we can't find out the answer, it doesn't exist. I only ask that parents keep their comments to a minimum, unless they have direct, first-hand experience.

So please, ask away, and don't worry, we don't bite.

highandtight

highandtight:

i would like to throw out a few questions.

Does being on a varsity or club team make it "somewhat easier" during plebe year? By easier I mean do the upperclass lay off a little?

Do you get to pick a roomate for the academice year or are roomates randomly assigned?

-highandtight -
I too would like to know your thoughts on being varsity or on any other team. I was told a while back by a Commander that kids who were in sports caught a tougher time from some of the others due to the fact that sports guys got out of some of the duties. This, because of the team practices and the time away for competitions/games. From your experience, have you witnessed anything of the kind?

Yes, being on a varsity sport makes it easier. People who get on you for missing stuff due to sports are gay and will be mad at everyone anyway. Pick a sport and get ready to work hard, but it is definitly worth it.

During plebe summer I can't personally comment, but talking to my roommate and some varsity athlete friends, some of the practices allow for more "down time" than regular intramurals during the summer. I did not notice the upperclass making anything any easier for varsity athletes. We were all equals.

You pick roommates, at least in my company.

Most plebes could care less, because we understand varsity athletes have obligations that keep them from the usual plebe bullsh... The only people that don't work well at the academy are those who actively seek ways to get out of various trainings and obligations. THERE is a fast way to get disliked.

If you know any former Napsters how is their attitude towards the first year at the academy compared to everyone else?

hey my dad who is an academy grade said they had t-tables for mids on varsity sports to sit with their teams at some meals. he said that was good because it let you get away from the older guys in your company and sit with your teammates who won't give you as much of a hassle. do they still have those tables?

Yes! They still have them here.

If you know any former Napsters how is their attitude towards the first year at the academy compared to everyone else?

Hey, most of the napsters i know have a good attitude, they are happy to be moving along in their naval careers. Some of course are bitter, but most are just that much farther ahead then those who came straight from high school.

Yeah during the Ac year there are team tables that come and go with seasons. Your teammates give you absolutely no hassle, its like you arent even a plebe at team tables.

Kind of a wierd question, but what are the regs on toiletries, especially with razors. The biggest hassle I have is shaving. I'm guessing it's against regs to get an electric razor, is it?

Kind of a wierd question, but what are the regs on toiletries, especially with razors. The biggest hassle I have is shaving. I'm guessing it's against regs to get an electric razor, is it?

Actually is a good question. During the summer i dont remember anyone having an electric razor, but i dont remember them specifically saying it was against the rules. Most of the mornings(ie eeeevery morning) I ended up dry shaving, which was SUCH a pain in the... well face. Now ive switched to electric. Go for it, its great.

i'll take the napster question:

i am kinda cynical about the whole "going from 700/month, freedom galore" to "12 hrs of liberty and 100/month."

that's the tough part. Academically, NAPS is a lot harder, although being on a varsity sport makes up for the easier academics here. I'll handle that one as well. Not only does practice take up time after school, but going on movement orders to competitions also eats up a lot of weekend study. And as a member of a div. I athletic team, the last thing you want to do before a competition is chemistry and calculus.

but yes, you get the locker room as a place to get away from the hall, and having upperclass teammates can also help as well.

looks like most of it has been answered but here is my input...

shaving - have your rents bring an electric razor over plebe parents' weekend. you will likely pull heat from cadre if you bring one i-day, but then again you rate what you skate so give it a shot if you have to shave a lot (because that would help tremendously) just be sure to hide it (ceiling).

roomates - dependant on company but about 25/30 of the companies let you pick.

napsters - there is a definite bond among them and they stick tight but they dont stick only to themselves. overall good group of people.. a lot of your priors come from there so good for help with the military-specific stuff until you get the hang of it.

varsity athlete - go out for one over the summer (they start toward the end of plebe summer) but we have some good teams so you may not be playing the first year. honestly, unless it is crew (slaves), i would suggest sticking with a sport through plebe year as long as you like it (most teams dont cut plebes... they just dont play them) as the benefits from what ive experienced are pretty nice. on the other hand, if it is killing you for time (as many of them do) dont stick to it just for the perks and let the grades slip. team tables while youre in season were summed up pretty well. just a chill meal with the team, no yelling or sitting like a statue. they are evening meal only by the way.

wow, long (and late) post but i just caught up on all of the threads so dont worry about me writing novellas in the future.

~4 days of class left~

"Does being on a varsity or club team make it "somewhat easier" during plebe year? By easier I mean do the upperclass lay off a little?"

I don't think there is an across the board answer for this one. Some upperclassmen will realize that, while you are "getting out" of doing some plebe duties, you are making up for it by getting the hell worked out of you at practice. Others will think your practices are all fun and games, and feel the need to give you some extra "attention" when you are in the Hall.

The "T-Tables" are a good deal for plebes. As a plebe, 2 of the 4 plebes in my squad were football players, so the other non-athlete and I got lots of extra attention during the noon meal.

DeepThroat

What is the deal with crew? Slaves?

My roommate is a lightweight crew guy. THEY WORK LIKE DOGS. He is up at 5 every morning rowing, lifts at lunch, and works out after school, finally getting back to the room at around 630 every single night. I can't even imagine how tough it must be. He has huge blisters and stuff on his hands from rowing. He loves it though.

besides some guys who did it well in high school, crew works like this. the coach sends a letter to every guy with an appointment that seems to fit the profile (height and weight) of a rower. it says something along the lines of "come out for crew its great." from there, all of the plebes who go out for it are worked to death and are weeded out either because they dont like it or they get hurt. as long as youre a decent athlete and you dont get injured, those workouts will make you a hoss... hence, national champs. im pretty confident thats basically how it works... start with a bunch and survival of the fittest from there. plus, i believe there are quite a few teams. they have several boats for varsity, junior varsity, and plebe teams.. lightweight and heavyweight categories.

yeah im 6'4, 195 lbs, apparently fitting the profile pretty well. i know its tough, but physically is it pretty rewarding or is it repetitivie b.s.? i just want to be involved in a sport more than anything - i played 4 years of varsity soccer in HS but I won't pursue that at the Naval Academy.
