Looking Forward

For the Appointees: What are you guys looking forward to the most?... and the least?

The most : making good friends, being around all those motivated mids.

the least : swimming

being around all the motivated mids? lol i think you may be disappointed.

So what would you say is the split among plebes as to those who are "Joes" versus "indifferent" or "hanging in" versus those who are "hardcore whiners" or major "skates". Feel free to substitute your own descriptions.

Also, as far as you can tell, how do these ratios change as the midshipmen advance class.

While you may think I'll be dissapointed, I don't believe so.

While at NASS, I met 3/C midshipmen that in my opinion, were very motivated.

Also, compared to the kids at my current school it will be a giant improvement even if they aren't motivated.

dbluecap -
Are you going to do a CWV?

Yes, I'm going to call tomorrow to try to schedule it for Feb 10-11.

the most? oooo too much...

the least? definitely with dbluecap on the swimming thing, and then the engineering-type classes. oh, and not wearing my hair down and not wearing civilian clothes, but i'll live.

dbluecap: they'd just finished their plebe year, of course they were motivated. during plebe summer you'll be told, just like we were, that the rest of the brigade is nothing like your nass detailers or your plebe summer cadre: cynicism is an epidemic here. remember: the nass detailers are specifically chosen because they are the most motivated, had the best grades, etc. i worshiped my squad leader.

about the split among plebes who are "joes" and those who are indiferrent-no one can really be indifferent during plebe summer, but after that many people can get lazy. what keeps most people from indifference is that we are all ranked both by our upperclass and our peers, and you get a grade based on those rankings. there are many "whiners", and their aptitude for commissioning (the grade i mentioned before) grades reflect that. mostly though, plebes don't have to worry about other plebes being joes on them: its more of a "we have to stick together and help each other to make it through this year" mentality. Joes are typically upper-class who flame on you. about the whole "skate" thing, over plebe summer you can really grow to resent those who are "chit surfers", people who injure themselves and milk it for all its worth so that they don't have to do the physically demanding things, like PEP in the morning. i had a boy in my squad who insisted his shin splints were too painful to chop, and yet could run like the wind during his squash practices in the afternoons.
advice: even if you're unsure about whether or not you are "good enough" to play a varsity sport at the academy, TRY IT. i was a walk-on swimmer, and being a varsity athlete is the sweetest deal a plebe can get: i'm excused from morning formations and noon formations and saturday morning training: i get to eat meals with my swim team, and barely see my squad. i get rated very rarely.

as far as these ratios changing, it seems like the older mids get, the mores joes there are.

wheelan44: you mentioned the "sweet deal" for varsity athletes- does the same apply to those on JV teams? Do the JV teams eat at team tables as well, and do JV teams meet/train all year like their varsity counterparts?

It's more of bribe which induces motivation :)

sleep ins
weekends...
