For Communications Design/Graphic Design: SVA vs. Pratt vs. Parsons

I am applying to Pratt's communications design program with a concertration in Graphic Design, Parsons's communication design, and SVA graphic design as a first time freshman.

I would like to know opinions on which program is the best for someone who wants to learn a lot of art and technical skills in different types of graphic design.

I am also interested in photography and video/motion graphics but would only want to pursue those things as electives or minors if available.

Also, which program has the best connections for internships, job placement, etc. If you know any other information about the advantages or disadvantages of the schools in general that would be nice to know too.

For a while I was thinking of them in this order 1) Pratt 2) Parsons 3) SVA but after doing more research I think i might like SVA bests and parsons last.

Thanks to anyone who gives their input.

@Isketchalot how is the admissions process going for you? My D was admitted to Pratt ComD (graphic design) and we are planning to be out at the accepted students day in April. She’s still waiting on a couple of schools - no decisions yet. Looked at Parsons and really liked it but prefers the Pratt campus to bustling Manhattan. Did not apply to SVA either. Are you still preferring SVA?

I am in a similar boat - just that my daughter has also been accepted at RISD. I am told that SVA is the best in graphic design among the NYC options…however RISD scores above all…any insights?

@advise1947, congrats to your daughter on getting into RISD! I’d agree with you about the graphic design program there. But RISD is particularly good because it has a deep field of top ranked programs across the board - including its foundation studies. And the opportunity to take some of those LAC’s at Brown. So regardless of what your daughter actually ends up doing for a major, she would have an unbeatable experience.

Sticking just with graphic design, all three NYC programs seem to be highly rated (at least from what I’ve read . . . ). SVA probably has the edge. If my D were facing a choice between SVA and RISD I guess I’d encourage her to consider: 1) quality of student work at each; 2) student life / campus community (or lack thereof); and 3) net cost of attendance. Hopefully she’s planning a visit to each if she hasn’t been there already.

Good luck to her on her decision!

Hi @advise1947
Where did your daughter finally go to?
I’m an international graphic design student and I’m accepted to SVA, Parsons, SAIC and SCAD. But I’m ruling out SAIC and SCAD anyway and I’m waiting for RISD decision. For now I can’t decide whether I should go to SVA or Parsons. Please help!
Thank you so much!
