S is beginning to think about colleges he may be interested in. I have read some favorable print about St. Mary's College in Maryland. It sounds like a lovely school. We don't know much about their art department/curriculum and its reputation, though. He is at the present time very interested in pursuing a degree in art. How strong is the art department there? Does it specialize in any particular field of art? Have graduates been able to find placement at reputable grad schools?

Also, he swims and is considering continuing swimming at the collegiate level. Do you have any knowledge about the program there? We would appreciate any opinions/knowledge you could share. Thanks so much!

Hi, Im gonna be starting at St. Mary's this coming school year. I don't really much about the art department; I don't think it is especially weak or strong. The overall reputation for St. Mary's is very good in Maryland but isn't well known nationally, however, that is the case with many liberal arts colleges. I can't speak for the art program specifically, but I know that St. Mary's is very successful in grad school placement. About 50% of graduates go directly to grad school.

All the sports at St. Mary's are D3, including swimming. For a D3 school, the program is quite good. Also, of note, this past spring the new athletic facility was completed, including new aquatic facilities. It is considered to be one of the best athletic facilities among all small schools.

samonite16, Thanks for sharing what you know so far. It would be interesting to get some feedback from anyone in the art program. If you run into anyone when you get back to school, or hear more about it, I would love to get further information from you (or them! :) ) It is so helpful to learn about schools from students and not brochures! That is great news about the swimming facilities- I will definitely pass on that information to my S. Again thanks for writing and maybe I will learn more from you in the future.

I was accepted to St. MAry's this year but I am going to attend another college. I'm not from MD but even the out of state tuition is below private LACs. The campus is beautiful and the people I met were great. The program I want just isn't there yet. The admin people were all very helpful. Call them and discuss the art dept. and make a visit sometime other than the fall open house which was a zoo. too many people. there's MD College of art too. I think GWU in DC also has a good art program.
