For everyone who took the SSAT today...

For everyone who has completed the SSAT today, here's a thread for us to chat about it. What did you think of the test? What was hardest (specific problems or general concepts), and what was simple?

Ahhhh... I'm pretty upset right now. I'm naturally a slow test-taker, which resulted in three or four problems left blank at the end of the first math section and six left in verbal, in addition to the handful I left blank because I was uncertain and all of the problems I may have gotten incorrect anyway. I was able to pace myself far better at home when I set a timer. I didn't have any time left to check my work. I didn't finish my writing sample, either! I don't know what happened.

My parents are against letting me take the SSAT again, and I don't know if I want to go through the whole process again, but I'm not at all confident in my work. I'm distraught, because I have no idea what to do. I'm certain my scores aren't Andover, Exeter, or Hotchkiss material.

I'm frustrated with myself because with five more minutes in each section, I would have done so much better... the content wasn't very difficult at all. I'm really stressed out right now, and wondering what to do --- cancel the scores, or let them go through? Should I accept the mediocre (or worse!) scores, or put myself through a retake?

I need some advice from all of the experienced parents and students out there. Help!

Hey,

I took the SSAT this morning too. I liked the writing sample, first math computation, and the reading comprehension sections. I did not like the verbal or second math computation.

I was told it is best to cancel your scores and buy the package on-line. This enables you to add or cancel 10 score reports scores for $25 rather then $10 apiece. What I would do is wait to receive your scores and if you like them send them to the schools if not retake.

Remind your parents that this is very important. Try to study more and time yourself with less time at home.

Where did you take your test today and what schools are you applying to?

tleigh

I took the test at Cranbrook today. I'm applying to Cranbrook, Hotchkiss, Andover, and Exeter.

I was under the impression that, unless I cancel my scores by this Tuesday, they will be sent to my home and the schools. I'd really like to know my scores and then decide, but I don't think that's possible. Is it?

Also, let's just say, as a possible worst-case scenario, I got:

15 wrong or blank in Math (35 or so/50) --- I know I left four or five blank, so my best possible is about (43/50)
20 wrong or blank in Verbal (35 or so/60) --- I know I left about seven total blank, so my best possible is about (50/60)
10 wrong in Reading (28 or so/40) --- I answered everything so my best possible is about (37/40)

Where is Cranbrook, sorry.
You can cancel the score reports and then receive the reports to your house. If you like the report you can add them back and the schools will receive them.

tliegh

Cranbrook is in Michigan. I would apply as a day student there, as well as Detroit Country Day (which only accepts the ISEE).

Thank you for the information! We'll consider it!

The reading sucks, I got at least 20 uncertain or blank answers. I was wondering did we take the exactly same test? What passages did you encountered in your reading comp?

I had one about the o-zone layer, one poem, and one really weird one about privacy. You?

Same here!

Really where did you take it and did you get that privacy one at all? I did not like the pen they supplied by the way. What was your essay topic?

The whole reading comp doesn't make sense, my essay topic was dividing a tough work into small pieces of jobs.

I took it and I'm also pretty dissapointed in myself. I had 2 or 3 left in the first math section and about 5 in the verbal. I was so upset when I left the first thing my mom said when she saw me was "You can take it again if you need to." lol. There were like 2 questions at the end of the first math that had to do with a table and it had these arrows and things...I couldn't understand it no matter how many times I went over it. Were there different writing topics? Mine had to do with a quote about failure resulting more often when giving too much rather than too little, can't remember right now exactly what it was

That math question with the arrows was like option five. I took the practice test and my math teacher explained it to me. There were like six different topics for the essays. Mine was the most difficult thing is asking for help. That second to last reading comp about the privacy was really confusing. I overall did not like the verbal and I was worn out by the last math one.

I suck in reading, by the way, how do you prepare for the reading comp?

I have always done well on the ITBS test for reading comp. Just practice over years help. Try reading new and harder to understand books and asses how you understand it. This is just my opinion.

the reading comp was soo easy. I ran out of time on the second english and missed around six. I needed more time for the math. I missed about 5 in each section. Hopefully it will turn out alright

I personally did not like the verbal. Besides that one privacy question the reading comp went okay. The SSAT is a measurement of your skills from the time you started school. So, if you are typically good at reading comp you will do good in that area as opposed to if you are not so strong in another area. This is strictly my opinion.

Well, at least I can say that I'm so grateful to everyone here for being supportive! Everyone here is so comforting, and none of my friends or family at home can really understand the stress of this test and applying to boarding school.

I'm so thankful to hear that I'm not the only person who struggled to complete the math and verbal sections in the given time. We're all in this together, right? (No High School Musical pun intended.)

My essay question was about confident people, and whether they are always respected or not.

My essays were about koalas, the ozone, a poem about a distraught judge, the bizarre one about privacy, one about a ballet company in Harlem, and another about shoreline and beach erosion.

Verbal was on the easier side, but I still ran out of time.

i had the exact same reading comps, im pretty good at those tho and they were easy. Math was somewhat hard for me, but thats my weaker subject, ran out of time for verbal, but it was easy. It seems most people are feeling the same way about things. I'm in 10th grade tho, so that may change things.

I feel the same way. I just think the privacy reading comp was very bizarre. Thanks also for all the support. Where are you guys applying to?

The reading comp was almost killing me......
How preparation did you do with the reading comp?
