Glance through the CC 2012 Acceptances list (http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/prep-school-admissions/471751-master-list-2012-acceptances.html) and you see a variety of schools represented. Personally, I think it's great to see 66 schools listed! Every once in a while there is a post that pops up commenting on CC bias toward certain boarding schools. Is there? This list can show related actions of people participating on CC -- for this fall, at least -- in a fun way.

Here's info from a quick tally of those CC applications for Fall 2008 (all the normal cautions about possible mistakes; just take this with a grain of salt) --

99 students

Top places from which CC students received rejection letters:
1. St. Paul's (9)
2. Exeter (7)
3. Andover (6)

Anyway, thought this was a fun & different way to look at that list. Is it what you expected or different?

actually i didn’t know people got accepted @ Lville or taft. in fact, i didn’t know ANYONE who applied to taft.

rejections were expected, i guess. waitlist #1 was definitely expected (anybody remember march 08? “did hotchkiss actually REJECT anyone?”)
though im actually surprised exeter and andover are the first ones in acceptances, despite having the most apps. but the “acceptance” rate at CC for exeter is 50% which surprises me because exeter is obviously way more selective than that.

which proves how smart ze CC people are :D

True. Very interesting stats. CC certainly has an impressive acceptence rate. We should advertise as some sort of elite admissions assistence program. :P

Please remember that this is an anonymous public board, and sometimes people are not completely honest.

I agree that the applicants on this board are, in general, very bright. But they are people, and some people do not like to broadcast failures and might exaggerate successes. I know many posters are very honest, so I don’t mean to imply that you cannot believe anything; I just want to point out that you cannot believe everything.

OP - I know you suggested that it might not be accurate, but I just wanted to point this out again before some wishful thinkers conclude that their chances are 50% by virtue of being on cc.

This is an interesting way of looking at the scenario. Thanks for posting it.

Thanks for the useful (even with caveats) summary. I think there were a lot more rejections than we know about. A couple reasons: people don’t like to post bad news, rejections came a day or two later for some schools, etc.

But, again, thanks for doing this!

:) Right, there are plenty of cautions about accuracy. This is just one more way to look at the list.

I didn’t rank acceptance by % because it’s not relevant and too easy to misinterpret. Of students who applied to many of these schools (Blair, Salisbury, Kent, Avon Old Farms, etc.) the “acceptance rate” would have been 100%. (For example, 7 students applied to Blair and all of those students were accepted.) On the flip side, the rate for places like Deerfield and Hotchkiss was representative of school average.

It does fit into the conversation about is there a bias on CC and the need to find the “best fit” for your student. It gives us a little insight as to the patterns in picking schools, particularly stretch schools.

The majority of applications were submitted to TSAO schools. Makes sense. TSAO has a broad reach.

CC isn’t exclusive and that’s a great benefit for people using the forum. A number of students applied to schools like NMH, Blair, and Miss Porter’s, to pick a few. Some very satisfied parents & students are helping others learn about schools in ways beyond marketing materials. Very useful!

Seeing as how I’m the only person here actually attending Middlesex, I’m surprised it was on the top applications.

^^Back in March and April we discussed that MX had a ridiculous number of applicants this year, something on the order of 10 applicants to every spot.

10% acceptance rate? I’m skeptical.

It’s perfectly reasonable to have a 10% acceptance rate on College Confidential website. Nothing about the stats of people on this website comes even remotely close to reflecting the actual admit stats of a school.

10 applicants for every spot does not equate to a 10% acceptance rate. Remember that you still have to factor in the yield rate (the number of admitted students who accept the offer of admission). If there were 10 applicants for every spot and their yield rate is 50%, then their acceptance rate was 20%. Admissions over accepts applicants based on a projected yield. Waitlists are protection for an inaccurate yield.

According to boardingschoolreview which Middlesex updated on 7/30/08, their acceptance rate is 25%, so their yield must be less than 50%.

Yeah, they had about a 20% acceptance rate, I asked on revisit days. They also thought they over-accepted, because more people seemed interested than they expected. I don’t know if they did or not, I do know that last year two of their accepted junior girls ended up going, and this year 4 did. Maybe they ended up accepting twice as many juniors, I don’t know. They take about 100 new students each year. Or at least, they WANT 100 new students each year.
