For Georgetown Grad School

Hello Everyone! I am currently a senior at The George Washington University, majoring in Political Science. My first choice for graduate school has always been Georgetown, hopefully for something in the political field. I was wondering what my chances were.

Do not be pretentious and obnoxious when answering this question. I have done my research, talked to advisers, etc. I just want an outside opinion:

-Overall GPA: 3.4

-Political Science and History GPA (major and minor, respetively)- 3.7

-5 internships- 1. Political manager at new social media firm 2. Intern w/ Democratic National Committee 3. Intern with Republican National Committee (I wanted both political facets) 4. Intern with my House Representative 5. Intern with political consulting firm

-I am one of the captain of the Washington, DC fight team, I am 3-1 in Muay Thai fights and 1-0 in MMA Cagefights (hopefully, this counts as a sport because I was a VERY dedicated captain of a very successful team)

-I am the President of the GW Jujitsu club and a member of the GW Moderates

-I can get great recommendations from a few of my professors and employers from the internships

With this information, can any of you gauge my chances? Any advice would be nice. Thanks!

The sports stuff is totally irrelevant to your application - graduate schools don’t care about extracurriculars unless there’s some relationship to the discipline.

Graduate admissions are essentially impossible to “chance” because they’re much more selective and much less quantitative. Your GPA is a bit low but that’s not necessarily a roadblock - I got in a bunch of places with a flat 3.0. Your internship experiences should help, and your GRE scores will be important too.

thanks for your reply.

Do you think my GPA for my major and minor are sufficient?

How important do you think internships are? Do you believe that my internships are valuable?

And with a flat 3.0, what are the graduate schools you got accepted to, if you do not mind me asking, of course.

Yes, I think all your internships are valuable for the program you’re looking at. You might want to start thinking about leveraging them in your Statement of Purpose - is there an interesting research question that ties into your experiences?

I have been accepted at Missouri, Indiana, SUNY-ESF, Clemson, Idaho and Maine (the latter with full funding).

thanks for the advice!
