For journalism: Syracuse, Indiana, Mizzou, Boston U?

I need to narrow down the number of colleges I am applying to and would like to compare/contrast these schools. I am interested in journalism (print journalism to be exact-maybe newspaper, magazine, travel, etc) so any input about the J/Comm-schools would be nice. I am also interested in possibly minoring/double majoring in polysci and/or english. Which school would you choose and why? Which campus/area/city do you like better? Safety at them? Social ops? Job ops? Reputations? Anything would be helpful, thanks!

bump......

anyone????

Part of the equation depends entirely on your personal preferences. The type of environment you prefer, distance from home, class sizes, etc. The schools you indicated have very different cultures. Aside from your major, what other factors are most important to you? Also, are the schools you mentioned the only ones you will consider, or are they just the only ones you've identified as having good Journalism schools?

I don't mind how far away I am from home, how large or small the school is, or how rural/urban it is, etc. so I need some more input to help me narrow down my list...and these are just my safties that all have great J-schools. I can see myself being happy at any of these schools, but would just like to hear anything from others in case I am forgetting something or hear something insightful that may help me make a better decision. Really any opinions or info you feel makes one school better/worse than the others is appreciated.

Indiana tends to be print/news/magazine oriented in the J school and has a great student paper so it's a good choice for you, and the English department is pretty good too. Don't know much about poli sci.

I dont know why Mizzou's jschool would be a safety for anyone.

i visited mizzou and am automatically in w/ honors b/c of my gpa, test scores, etc...that's what I mean by "safety," that there isn't a lot of doubt as to whether or not I will get in as opposed to HYPS or whatever...its a fantastic J-school and is not a "safety" in regards to its academic excellence.

I second Indiana; it has an amazing journalism program. It's one of the top 3 concentrations (other 2 being business and music of course). Very LAC-feel for being a public, with large OOS % to boot.

I also know that IN GENERAL, Syracuse has an excellent mass communications program if you can afford it.

Generally, all the schools you listed have good journalism programs. I know a lot about Syracuse, so I can help you out mostly when it comes to their J school. It is generally regarded as one of the top programs in the nation, along with a couple of other ones that you have listed. ABC News chose SU as one of 5 colleges to host an ABC On Campus news bureau, which is a testament to the strength of the program.

The school itself? Or you have guaranteed admission to the jschool?

TUOwls...the j-school, I talked w/ my regional rep as I toured the J-school and she explained everything to me...so basically as long as I apply, I'm in...

Okay, I guess what I'm really looking for are things that make these schools different...I know all have great J-schools...and I like all the campuses, so what things do you all like/dislike about each, how do they compare/contrast...I've pretty much taken Boston U off my list, and I forgot to add Ohio U and UNC Chapel Hill before...so to restate what I said before, could anyone give me some input on Syracuse, Indiana, Mizzou, Ohio U, or UNC? Thanks!

Have you considered Northwestern? The Medill School of Journalism is highly regarded. I have two friends who went through that program and are doing very well now.

Yes, I am def. applying to Northwestern...but I need to narrow down some safety and match schools that all have great J-schools of communication programs...so I would like any opinions or input on Syracuse, Indiana, Mizzou, Ohio U, or UNC...obviously all are great for journalism, but what in your opinions makes one school better (whether or not it is journalism related). The campus, school newspaper, city, housing, anything! Thanks!

UNC has a beautiful campus, great sports, a great social atmosphere and is located in an awesome area. Academics are top-notch at UNC, but people know how to kick back as well. Chapel Hill is a neat little city, and the amount of college people around here is amazing. 8 miles from UNC is Durham (and Duke), while both NC State and Wake Forest University are about a half hour drive down the road. The college rivalries in the triangle are epic as well.

bump......

So, I’m not sure if you’re ever on this website anymore…but if you are, I’m curious as to which school you chose!!!
