Journalism Major: Syracuse's Newhouse or Mizzou?

I can't decide. I'm going for magazine journalism and I want to know which one will give me the skills I need to get a job in journalism, but also a well-rounded education that is just as necessary.

Mizzou is great and has one of the best journalism schools in the country. But I wouldn’t want to be in Missouri. Syracuse is great and I personally would pick it over Mizzou. I would think more internships also. Mizzou is better for journalism overall, but Syracuse is ranked higher overall. I would go with your heart. Good Luck!

Syracuse is awfully expensive if you want to be a working journalist after graduation, unless you got a terrific FA package. The market is not kind to J-school grads lately. I’d go for a lower price tag (and frankly, Mizzou is a better J-school!).

I think it is a better school overall though. But location is also a key, who would want to live in Missouri?

i didn’t get any financial aid from either school, but my parents told me they can pay for either
i am worried about mizzou’s education outside of journalism though

Live in Misery or live in upstate New Yawk? I’d have to go with Misery  I go to school in Swampeast Misery though I’m from Illinois.

OP, I have a high school classmate who goes to Mizzou in the journalism program. As far as I know, she enjoys it. I think she currently works for a radio or TV station there in Columbia as well. And their athletics have definitely gotten better! It’s a great time to be a Mizzou Tiger!

when you said you thought it was a better overall school, did you mean syracuse?

Yes, Syracuse is a way better school overall. I think it would look beter re: resume. Also, if you decide journalism isn’t your thing then you’ll have Syracuse on the resume. It’s in the top 100 schools and you don’t hear much of Missouri’s acadmics, except of their journalism school. Though, Syracuse isn’t that great location either. I rather be there then Misery. If you wanted the best internships I would have went to NYC or LA, lol.

columbia isn’t so bad. just wait till you visit and see the rec center, new j school buildings, etc.

go to mizzou, it’s cheaper and it’s the best j school in the world.
