As a CS major at UR, I think the list is really dumb. This entire question banks on what your son wants to program and what else he wants to do. Some questions to consider:
What is the budget?
What ambitions does the person have? Is he going to be a college student?
What kind of content does he want to create? Does he want to make Java/Python/C applications for a CS class? Does he want to develop iPhone Apps? Experiment with alternative operating systems?
What size does he want it to be? Will he travel a lot with it?
Will he be using a mouse frequently? Is touch-screen integration a must have?
Does he want the ability to play a variety of video games (Macs are terrible for video game players)?
