I provided two references as requested - my Mom and another family member. When should my references expect to be called by Discover: within a couple of days? within a week? never?

And, when should I expect to hear about being approved by Discover for the Stafford loans.

By the way, I signed the MPN after my college certified me to Discover for the Stafford loan.

THANKS IN ADVANCE for sharing your experience.

My interpretation is that those two “people” are not references, but would be used should you not make your payments and they need to “track you down.” I could be wrong, but that is how I sussed the need for that information.

I don’t think they usually call your references. Or, at least, afaik my references have never been called.

References listed on Stafford Loan MPN’s are used solely for the purpose of locating the student should the lender lose contact with the student. They are not contacted for any other reason.

I’m wondering about the OP’s latter questions, too. I’m going to be billed for tuition starting in late August/early September. Should I have heard confirmation, disbursement, something about my Stafford loan? Because the deadline was June 1 to apply, sign MPN, and take that “good borrower” course. I met the deadline, and haven’t heard. Is this normal? Am I just going to see the credit on the bill in several months, or did I miss something? Or am I just paranoid?

(Yes, my lender is Discover, too.)

It depends on how your school certifies loans. Some schools have already started certifying for fall. Others may wait until closer to the semester starting. You can always contact the FA Office at your school to determine when they are planning to certify. Once it has been certified, you will receive documentation from the lender detailing the loan information (Notice of Loan Guarantee).

Thanks, NikiiL. I know I should just call them; I’ve just been putting it off for lazy/pointless reasons, I guess.

I signed the MPN after my college certifed me to Discover, the lender. When I went to Discover website, much of my application was pre-populated with information by the University FAO. So, in this case, does any one know, how long it will take Discover to approve the application?

THANKS IN ADVANCE.

If it is a Stafford Loan, then it is already approved and just pending disbursement. Your institution will be able to provide you with a timeline for disbursement.

If it is a private loan, they should have already notified you about the approval or denial.
