Actually what I meant is can I write about a specific experience which is only unique for bruneians?

It will only make sense for this essay if that experience is one that has shaped you and allows you to interact with students at Rice differently than others.

Like susan said :)

any ideas for the why go rice essay??? I am kinda stuck. went to a concert at Stude b4. and read stuff in magazine about rice prof. that is about it for me.

you seriously can't think of any more reasons you want to go to Rice??
No offense, but if that's true, why are you applying?

It's asking why you want to go to RICE instead of other schools. I would mention things that Rice can offer you that other schools cannot.

Are you not at all drawn by the weather, location, size, emphasis on undergrads, residential colleges, food, research opportunities, etc etc???
If yes to any of those, I highly suggest you write it.

Gorgeous campus, inviting social atmosphere, college system, best education in the South... 'nuff said.

The unique perspective just means, "Who are you?" and "what do you bring to Rice". Both my kids struggled with this essay - one wrote about how she took her British cousins to see a high school football game, and how it was the first one she had ever seen, then continued talking about things that were a part of her life, (classical music, debate, listening to NPR, etc). My other kid wrote about growing up in a non-religious family, with friends that were mostly more affluent, and how he put his belief in science. IMHO neither essays were particularly good, but did give a sense of who my kids are. Have faith in yourself, and just write something! :)

One of your kids listens to NPR? Wow, I thought I was the only person under 65 that listened to that. It's great for getting news while you're driving, and the old-school tunes are cool too lol

And I agree with anxiousmom's post - "who are you" and "what do you bring to Rice" are the questions you should try to answer.

One listens to NPR; one watches football. Love 'em both! (and both of them love Rice.)

Rice kids are so cool :)

In the supplement, it asks you to list all the other schools you are applying to. I'm applying to 6 total, and some are 'technically' ranked better than Rice. I really like Rice and don't want to make it seem like if I get accepted that I will not attend. Will it seem like I have less interest in Rice? Is there anyway for them to find out? Why do they even ask this question?

I don't think it matters. I think it's just a statistical thing so they can go and say "Rice students also apply to these schools" or something like that.

Hey, I listen to NPR. and yeah, I know those stuff about Rice, but I thought they wanted something really personal in the short answer;that was how I got stuck. I can't think of any Personal reason to choose Rice. and for my perspectives essay, I wrote about my dedication to playing violin, which I did for 10 years now.

and I also like classical music. obviously .

well then for your why rice? short answer, write about the shepherd school of music, one of the best in the country...and dont forget the residential colleges (imo what sets it apart)

hmm..just a quick question...

for the perspectives essay..i put in all the stuff about being indian, growing up in a multicultural society...and then I put in, right at the end, a small para about the individual me :
"But most importantly, as a person, I am unique. I have yet to meet someone who dabbles in guitar-playing and enjoys the hospital comedy ‘Scrubs’, ‘Pralines ‘n Cream’ flavored ice-cream from Baskin Robbins, books by Michael Crichton; Matthew Reilly; and Michael Connelly, and thinks rap is the common man’s poetry. "

should I continue in this vein? any suggestions?

personally, i think that its ok to go in that direction. the perspectives essay basically asks what will you contribute to rice?/what makes you unique? so your last paragraph emphasizes your answer. as long as you make it flow nicely and not abruptly enter into that new idea (i think you did this well as far as i could see), you should be ok. perhaps you might also want to add a little bit saying that your unique experiences (briefly sum up if you wish) contributes to your unique personality and way of thought. but ultimately its all up to you...

and your from dubai?! thats awesome!

for the why academic school? should I talk more about myself or the school?

how long should it be for the why school?

I would definitely try to convey who you are without saying so directly. Although I have no evidence to back this up, I feel like talking about what you think Rice is like and how it sounds great is pretty boring. Be honest. Most applicants have little idea what it's like to be a Rice, let alone college, student; that's fine.

I would definitely not claim outright that you are unique.
