For the hardcore procrastinators - Ask any last minute questions.

My 'why department of study' essay was 2 paragraphs.

I agree that neither "why" essay should just be a grocery list of Rice facts, but I think you should tie unique aspects of Rice into your answer...

For example, you could write:

I am fascinated by physics and blah blah... and want to help my fellow humans blah blah... and I know that Rice's on-campus nuclear reactor would provide many opportunities blah blah... Therefore, I know that the Wiess School of Natural Sciences would prepare me blah blah blah...

Show them that you've done your research, but most of all, just be HONEST.
It's not a trick question.

I loves me some NPR.

You guys have SIX minutes to submit the app.

around 200 words for why school essay.

Oh boy, I'm bad. I submitted the supplement 01/02 at 11:59:14 PM ET.
I did a little celebratory dance and then realized that I still had to pay the fee. The transaction is listed at 01/03 at 12:01:54 EST. However, I live on CST and Rice is on CST.

Will my application count as late?

I wrote A LOT for my why department essay.. talked about how my passion in math turn to passion to sciences and leads me to wiess.. it was around 450words.. and the bottom bit could not be seen in the preview.. am i in trouble?

if it wasn't seen in the preview, then unfortunately it won't be seen by the admissions officer.

jhl: Nobody calls the School of Natural Sciences "Wiess." Actually, except for Shepherd and the Architecture school, nobody really distinguishes between the academic divisions, because after you get here they mean virtually nothing. They mean a lot for the bureaucracy of the school (it's easier to have separate deans for the separate divisions), but since it's so easy to switch between majors and because you can sign up for classes in pretty much anything no matter what "school" you're "enrolled in," nobody cares.

Also, it's confusing because Wiess is the name of one of the nine residential colleges, which are a big deal.

Agreed. I didn't even know it was called Wiess.

Haha.. Thanks for the advice

The fact that it wasn't in the preview does not necessarily mean the admissions officer won't see it, though I am not sure if this applies to the preview. From the CommonApp website:

The PDF version of your application may not display some of your answers correctly. As long as they are saved to your application properly, they will be saved in the institution's database properly, even if they are not displaying correctly (or at all) on the PDF. You may want to check the pages of your application carefully before you submit it to ensure that your answers were saved properly.

Thanks Beef. I called the admissions office and the officer there asked me to send the complete version to them through email.. and they've received it.. I don't know which one they'll read tho.. hopefully the new one.. because i made one change to it..

If they said they received it then they will read the new one. I would think they're pretty organized about receiving new stuff so I don't think you should worry about it.

But if you want peace of mind, there is NO PROBLEM in calling them again to make sure! They won't remember you and they won't make any red marks on your app just because you keep bothering them. It's their job to make sure everything is in order.

Good luck!

Beef, what should I ask them?

They have replied to my email saying that they'll put the complete version in my file.. should I call to remind them to read the new one?

NO. They are busy people, and you have already called them, and they have already said that they will put the complete version in your file. Leave them to do their jobs.... really! ;)

Alright, thanks!
