Just a friendly advice, you better know for damn sure that Engineering is really what you want to do.

Today, I spent 6 hours at the library. Most of my Saturdays and Sundays since this semester started have been spent at the library. Am I complaining? No, because I knew it was going to be demanding and I would not want to be majoring in anything else.

This first semester has been a roller coaster- lots of disappointment and frustration but what keeps me going is my personal pride and also the fact that I like what I am studying - I can't imagine doing all this if I disliked my major or hated it.

I have seen a lot of kids that are already discouraged after a few months-but it really takes a strong person to get through all this.

I am not trying to scare anybody but think about how much you are willing to put in and what sacrifices you are willing to make before you decide to become an engineer.

The first year is the hardest for most people. I was a straight A+ student in high school and was shocked when I had a hard time that first year! I’m glad I stuck with it, because the classes got easier and more interesting. Yes, it was hard word, but I enjoyed it. I also partied a lot. I didn’t consider studying hard to be a sacrifice.

No need to scare the kiddos. All you need is to be doing it out of interest rather than for money. It’s as simple as that.

As above, don’t go into engineering just for the money, go into it because you love doing the work.

College can be a real shock for the STEM student that wants to do engineering. HS is a matter of learning the subject enough to reguritate it on a test. No real thought required. College requires you to think. You need to be able to appy what you learn. This is true in all majors but it really makes it hard in the STEM areas, especially engineering. It is hard to bs your way thru applied math.

But once you make it to about your junior year, you get used to thinking and applying what you know. You’re well on your way to becoming an engineer and the classes are really getting harder but they seem easier.

Nice job trying to scare off potential competition for jobs.

I kind of am expecting that. That’s why, even as a high school senior, I’m working my tail off to make sure I really know my physics and calculus.

I was thinking the same thing!
Sneaky OP…

@bschoolwiz what’s your specific major.?

Industrial Engineering. It may not be as hard as Electrical or Chemical but still, it is not a walk in the park.

hOW HARD IS eecs EXACTLY ?? Ill be starting EECS at UCB very soon (3 months :p)
