I have been to a few college fairs (as a rising high school junior), and I consistently see that colleges look at five aspects. Grades, test scores, EC's, recommendations, and essays.

Anyone who uses Naviance knows that there are a whole lot more categories than just those five things listed above (and it doesn't include recs/essays). I was wondering if EC's encompass more than just school activities i.e. any awards, achievement, jobs, internships, volunteering, leadership, etc.

I have been just assuming this is the case in the past, but please, anyone, correct me if I am mistaken.

Thank you all.

Yes they do.

Naviance can help you determine your chances conditioned on your GPA and SAT. Nothing more is implied. Sure there are more factors, but these two factors are pretty large.

Also people who think in black and white interpret chances to mean a prediction of whether you would get in. I mean it to be an estimate of the probability that you will get in.

At best you can start with a priori estimate of getting in by looking that the number of people from your school that got in divided by the number who have applied. Then by zooming in on a region, you can improve that estimate (up or down) based on your stats. It doesn’t replace the actual process though and there are certainly other factors.

Thank you very much, sir.
