For those still yet to attend their registration...

This mainly applies to engineering students, but all the good gen ed courses are already full. In addition to this, all the ideal times for the required courses are taken as well, meaning you'll most likely have to wake up and take the earliest classes. Classes such as psych and philosophy are already full. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Yeah, that was my experience, too. This was the first week of the second session and seats are supposedly saved for students coming in to each session, but I was shut out of my gen ed first choices and five or six backup choices. Did finally put together a decent schedule but it took way longer than it should have and I had to shift all my required courses around to fit in one acceptable (to me) gen ed course that finally showed up open. Be flexible and be prepared with lots of backup options for gen ed electives.

I went the first day and a LOT of classes were already closed so.... it really didn't help. But I'm anticipating a lot of switching later on, so just keep on top of things and I think you'll be fine. You can always I think search on the Self Service site.

That's how it is for every school. You get stuck with 8AM classes as a freshman and you get your first pick of classes after that.

Yeah it sucks right now but look a 9 o'clocl ECON 102 lecture at less than half capacity but all the sections are taken?!! No they will open more sections, extend capacities, and have drop-outs. If you're unhappy with your schedule just change stuff around in August when everything will be opening up again. Yeah it sucks kind of last minute but it is better than having 8AMs 5 days a week (I know I had Calc 1 at 8 every friggin day. It was awful).

And if you don't have a good schedule first semester it doesn't guarantee a good one second. I made Campus Honors so I was one of the first on campus to register (Nov 1 compared to Nov 17-20 when most of my friends registered). I basically picked what I wanted, which was very convenient. Some will be in the same boat as orientation but hopefully not this bad.

But hey for all you ChemEs, 202/203 is still wide open for registration!!! What no takers?

You should pre-register at https://apps.uillinois.edu/selfservice/

I have no idea why everyone doesn't just do this as early as possible.

Hey, nc3,

I guess I don't get it. I've been to that site, clicked on "Registration and Records" and then "Look Up or Select Classes". But all this tells me is whether the sections I want are 'C' (closed) or 'SR' (I assume available). There are no Preregistration links or checkboxes or anything of that nature. How do you Preregister?

If you do Preregister, does that hold those sections for you until your actual summer registration date?

I've already registered on campus this summer, but I'll be really PO'd if I find out I could have called dibs on the sections I wanted ahead of time - only the university never gave me that information!

bah crap, i can't even get in accelerated chemistry :(

i also thought there was priority registration for james scholar, and mine was on june 29! yarbles.

RogerS,

It's all pretty self-explanatory, at least to me: Click on Add/drop classes.

You are actually registering for classes; there is no pre-register as such. You'd do exactly the same thing as above when you are at orientation. The trick is if you find a class closed; don't give up. Check back every couple days, and you'll fnd some of them open up. And yes they do hold until and unless you drop them.

Unfortunately, our accounts are locked until August 20th.

same here
why?

GTO: Unfortunately, the James Scholar priority registration kicks in starting second semester. Priority registration is a nice benefit, but the problem is that the professors for most classes aren't posted when registration begins, so having priority registration can sometimes be useless if you want to pick a section with a better prof. In other words, you can select the sections later in the day, but you don't if that section might have a really bad prof.

Don't worry too much about a bad schedule at this point. At the beginning of the year, rearranging class schedules becomes pure madness. People add and drop classes all over the place. But you'll have to wait until classes actually begin for people to start juggling their class schedules. At that point, get comfortable in front of your computer screen and hope that the class or section you want opens up.

thanks for the information harri. it appeased me a bit.

Yeah I'm hoping for a spot in a better timed lab to open up.

I queried Registration by email about whether I should have been able to use the Add/Drop classes function at https://apps.uillinois.edu/selfservice before my orientation date to preregister, as n3c suggested. I recalled, after thinking about it, that I had already explored the Add/Drop section of the website earlier this year and it had a "Hold" to prevent me from entering.

The succinct answer from Registration is as follows:
"Incoming freshmen register during orientation, only. The hold should be placed on all freshmen."

Roger,

Well, they must have made a mistake on my account then, cuz mine says OK to register after April 29th. I made the same assumption that I had to wait till orientation, but, for heck of it, I tried a couple weeks before and was able to get most of my schedule done on line.
