Well I'm about to get a laptop very soon and I still haven't decided between a PC or Mac but I know the screen size will be 15". I will be playing some games, not alot and the games I will be playing are compatible with both mac and pc, and looking for it to last about 2 years or 3 hopefully. My major is bio sci.
I would ask this in the comp forum, but I'm asking specifically for UCI.

Say if I get a mac laptop, would most of the programs ran at uci be incompatible?

Of if I get a PC, don't they break down quicker than a mac?

What kinda laptop are you guys getting/already have?

oohhh I see, I was thinking about doing that. but my moms comp just broke down so she wants to use my desktop when I’m away. so bringing my desktop is outta the question unfortunately. =[

Oh, PCs don’t break down quicker? ok… hmmm. I’m still undecided though. lol

No, if you know how to use a PC, it shouldn’t break down at all; mostly it will just get old, lol. I am going to get a PC laptop myself. Personally, I think that Macs are just way too expensive for what’s inside them.

If you do end up getting a PC, make sure that they give you a free Windows 7 upgrade when it comes out in Oct. lol

Alright thanks haha. I still don’t know which PC to get either!

Oh and do you know if the programs at UCI run on both mac and PC?
Because I don’t want that to let me cancel out macs.
And if they didn’t, why would the bookstore (well, compstore) have mainly macs advertised?

Bookstore goes for the mainstream stuff. Plus, they get more sales from unsuspecting shoppers. PCs are durable, just get the right brand (non-HP).

For bio majors, all you need is excel, power point, and word. which are available on both mac and pc. but SOME professors (not all) use macs when preparing their powerpoints so some images may not show up on PC powerpoint versions. but this is easily fixable by downloading the pdf version instead.

macs are way expensive for their specs, just like another just mentioned.

Almost all computers that the public can use, from both libraries, computer labs, and the computers that control the projection devices that are in almost every lecture room use PC/Windows. You’ll more likely find Macs being used by students and faculty. I only saw public Macs at the computer lab at the Student Center.

To be honest, I like PC/Windows better. I never had any significant issues with it and any technical problems would be solved easily with few research and trial and error.

-PC’s are most recognizable and familiar to people. Hopefully, that means it’s a little easier for you to use
-PC’s do not break down faster. However, Macs are more user-friendly and thus more forgiving if you mishandle them. But it’s not like PC’s are going to naturally break all the time if you know what you’re doing. To be honest, I’ve never had a problem and believe those that do are those “technically illiterate” kind.
-PC’s are much, much cheaper.
-PC’s are much more compatible with programs and games

Alright thank you guys! :] this has been alot of help. I’m leaning more towards PCs haha specifically vaios now.
Does anyone know a good vaio laptop thats for games? I think the vaio NW is good for that. The new macbook pros are also good for games as well. hmmm. Any other brands that are good for games and not super heavy?

Are 17 inch screens really that ridiculous? I want a specific laptop but i can only find it in 17 inch…I do want to take it to class however, is it too big?

I would say 17 inches for a laptop is ridiculous. It will be hella annoying to lug it around campus. I wouldn’t say its impossible, but definitely a hassle that might not be worth carrying around.

If you are a Bio Sci Major don’t get a Mac.***

You will not be able to run Mcweb unless you run a virtual Pc on it or get bootcamp with a genuine windows key (buying Windows OS) because Mcweb is written for PC’s. Mcweb is where you do your online hw/quizzes for Chem classes.

get a pc

get HP (best deals + good quality)

if you plan on playing any games just make sure u dont have integrated graphics, aka. it says Nvidia / ATI (anything but Intel)

and im pretty sure u can run mac os on pc’s if you look around…although not sure about laptops XD
