Forbes College Ratings - by Athletic Conference

Saw this on another board and thought it an interesting comparison between the ACC vs SEC - academically per Forbes new ratings:

those Forbes rankings are ridiculous - Pitt would be a good school in any other ranking, You can argue that Alabama is a pretty solid school as well (not to say Clemson haha)

Agreed. Pitt is a good school and ranked too low by Forbes.

The various Forbes rankings are hit and miss; I wouldn’t rely on the Forbes rankings for much other than for entertainment.

Forbes nailed it not including me in their list of 100 richest Americans, but I’d question Forbes ranking the University of West Floria as the 10th best public college in America.

LOL university without football

The Forbes rankings are ok, but a couple of their measures are questionable.

They use data from PayScale.com, RateMyProfessor.com, and Who’s Who in America.

PayScale.com and RateMyProfessor.com are not reliable sources. Anyone can enter false information on those sites. Students can easily inflate their own schools stats or lower another schools stats if they want.

Who’s Who in America is a scam. I’ve gotten emails asking me to submit a biography for one of their publications even though I only graduated a few years ago and have few qualifications.

I think Forbes uses the “sticker” prices to calculate whether a school is a good deal or not. If this is true, it is flawed. Many schools have a high sticker tuition, but provide significant discounts, or “scholarships,” to qualified applicants.

That may be why some highly-regarded schools seem to be ranked low. I think Forbes ranks military schools near the top because they are “free.” Of course, they aren’t really free. The people who attend a military academy are dedicating themselves to a career in the military.

This list is notoriously volatile. Well-known schools are jumping and falling by 50+ places each year. That doesn’t seem credible.
