Forbes's College List

Someone's gonna lose their job, lol.

omg this is hilarious. Forbes is garbage.

this is like newsweek's (or was it us weekly? pretty sure it was newsweek) thing about the top 920348208 high schools
it makes no sense

Although I agree with people that there are some super crazy placements, I think it's nice that the list emphasizes some of the top LACs (Swarthmore, Amherst, Williams) by putting them in the top ten. They rock--especially Swarthmore! =)

I agree with Kicharo- parts are nice, but as I look further down the list, I can't quiiiiite believe it.

Claremont McKenna at 40 while Franklin and Marshall is at 35? Are you kidding me? I guess I should have just stayed home and gone to F&M! Haha and UPenn at 61.

Dartmouth is in the 120s. ha.

haha.

this list is trash.

This list is pointless. I now hate Forbes.

Why is NYU rated #324? Dartmouth in the hundreds?

Their methodology is flawed. If you look at the other thread in the College Admissions section, they base it on some 'rate my professors' website mainly and then a bunch of other random factors. Pathetic if you ask me.

Forbes just lost a lot of credibility in the eyes of the world.

Some other totally weird rankings, compared to USNEWs, Newsweek, and others;

Lehigh University: #310
New York University: #326
Northeastern University: #568
Stevens Institute of Technology: #565
University of Minnesota, Twin Cities: #524
University of Maryland, College Park: #410
University of Pittsburgh: #297
University of Southern California: #300
University of Michigan: #161
Dartmouth College: #127
WUSTL: #146

Just a few examples (Didn't feel like going through the whole list). They basically just flipped off 99% of the world's best universities.

At least they got Pace University right, at #561. That college is one piece of crap.

They base their rankings 50% on stupid factors. The first 25% is based on ratemyprofessors.com, and the other 25% on which alumni made it into some book called " Who's who in America."

They just wanted to give a "new" perspective to college admissions. I guess that means joining the military.

Did anyone notice that UPenn was 61?

And Dartmouth is something like 177, and Carnegie Mellon is something like 266.

I looked at the methodology, and found what's making to so screwy.

**"1. Listing of Alumni in the 2008 Who's Who in America (25%)

Student Evaluations of Professors from Ratemyprofessors.com (25%)

Four- Year Graduation Rates (16 2/3%)

Enrollment-adjusted numbers of students and faculty receiving nationally competitive awards (16 2/3%)

Average four year accumulated student debt of those borrowing money (16 2/3%)"**

Yeah. Even if I hadn't taken AP Stat I'd have known this was no good.

CalTech beats Harvard and MIT- MAYBE, JUST MAYBE
UNCCH beats UC Berkeley- BSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS (that's just my opinion)
Overall, most of the liberal arts colleges are up there.

I don't understand this though-

Cost of West Point- N/A
Cost of USAFA- 0

They're both military service academies and the policy is the same. In exchange for a free college education, you must serve in the military after graduation. So why is one 0 dollars and the other N/A?

I predict they'll take down that list in a matter of weeks due to some pretty unhappy phone calls (probably from some of you here). I find it amusing how Forbes accuses US News of "monopolizing the college rankings" and then comes up with a completely different list just to justify their claim.

Did anyone notice that this list says the percent of applicants accepted to Yale is 97% ??

this list is sooooo bad. rpi=499???? stevens=565????
no stupid list is gonna tell me that my college is only 565th best in the country!
w t f???

@Doll Face: They've fixed it now... that bug makes me laugh, though.

And I definitely don't trust this list. Mount Holyoke is in the 70s, and WPI is 557? The methodology is crazy and flawed, and the rankings are the most inaccurate I've seen.

Wow.

Yay. UVA is #5 on best public colleges. :)
I think the rest is BS.
