I have been told that approximately 40 freshmen were chosen to spend their first semester in London. These students were not given an option about this. It has something to do with a housing shortage.

Could someone with more exact knowledge explain this situation?

I know in the past Hamilton has accepted students to begin in January, with a fall semester in London. But that has been part of the regular admission process - an acceptee may choose to attend Hamilton under those terms or accept an offer elsewhere.

However, I did hear that Hamilton had quite a few more acceptances than expected, so this could be correct. I imagine Hamilton will adjust its yield expectations this year.

Hamilton does accept about 40 students to come to campus in January. They don't force you to go to London, they offer it as a way for you to get course credit. Jan-Admits can spend the first semester doing whatever they want- London is just a suggestion and a good way to meet other Hamilton kids. It's Hamilton's way of allowing more students to attend- when the juniors leave 2nd semester for their "junior year abroad" travel, a lot of housing opens up and that's where the Jans live when they come to Hamilton.
