My son got the word through the Fordam Portal today that he was accepted to the Fordam College at Rosehill. He applied specfically for the Fordam/Columbia 3-2 Engineering Program. We can't tell from what they posted to the Portal whether he got accepted into the 3-2 Program, or just accepted into Fordam. Any ideas?

You only get accepted to Fordham for now. If you want to do the 3-2 program, you have to put in a separate application in your junior year. Admission is guaranteed if you finish the prerequisite courses with a high GPA, but you don’t get accepted to Columbia until they know your performance is at least somewhere in the neighborhood of Columbia standards. (This is better than many less-prestigious 3-2 programs, which don’t guarantee admission even with a high GPA.)

I’m in the 3-2 program at Fordham.

It’s not really something you “get in to” - if you are accepted into Fordham, you can enter the 3-2 program if you wish. Anyone can get in.

The challenge is STAYING in. You will have to take a slew of math / science courses right from the onset, and you can’t get below a B in any of these classes (which means B- or below, you’re no longer guaranteed to get in).

The advisor I spoke with said roughly 25 students enter the program per year. Roughly half of those drop out before the third year, and of those remaining roughly half fail to get in to Columbia, typically because of a low GPA or not taking a required class.

That’s something else to watch out for - I urge your son to meet with his academic advisor constantly throughout his three years at Fordham. He must complete his core, major and pre-engineering requirements (determined by Columbia) to get in. Failure to complete any of these will jeopardize his chances of getting in to Columbia. It’s much tighter than people think. Definitely possible though, just have to work hard.
