Fordham Class of 2013 Decisions Thread

“”“It lost spots on Newsweek’s list because that magazine ranking had a lot to do with jobs/employment after graduation and they know that Fordham has a stellar record of getting kids into wallstreet firms and they PRESUMED Fordham would be hurt really badly with WallStreet blowing up last fall. Wrong!”"

I will assume it’s the BusinessWeek rankings that are being referred to. For anyone interested in how schools are ranked, here is a link to their explanation. It is ludicrous to state that BusinessWeek bases their rankings on presumptions. While their statistics and surveys may be flawed and biased, they are not presumptuous. The reason Fordham dropped in ranking was due to student surveys. Fordham ranked 64th in student survey rankings, while ranking 39th in recruiter rankings. The CBA Dean will actually be holding focus groups with the students to learn how their Fordham experience can be improved. UVA, on the other hand, climbed this year to number 1 in student surveys and 52 in recruiter surveys. While Fordham has a much smaller student body compared to UVA, UVA has an incredible Business facility and this is something Fordham needs to look at. Villanova and Notre Dame has them too. Georgetown, as well, is opening a new Business building this year and I expect their rankings will slowly improve because of the new state-of-the-art facilities. Fordham cannot compete with them unless they improve their Business facilities. And let’s not discuss the basketball program!!

And Nocousin, your name may have changed once again, but your writing style and opinions do not. If you really can’t stay away from this board like you said you were going to, at least please do some research and be factually correct. Those in the know, those who have close ties to Fordham and the Fordham community know when someone represents Fordham inaccurately. It’s the new people on this board who do not, and they are the ones that need a realistic view not a candy coated one.

Honestly, endlessrecession just continues to change names and post on this board as if no one notices.

I am SOOOO offended! Not. Sorry fellas. But your opinions are no more valid than the next guys. You are certainly free to disagree with me if you want. I could frankly care less. If you are that bored with your time to spend it stalking people and making ad hominem attacks, then it really sheds more light upon you than me.

My agenda here is to be helpful. What makes you so more well informed by the way Alumn?

almost all the wait listed people are minorities, is their a race issue hear, just speculating

Javaid91:

I highly doubt race plays any role in admissions decisions, including waiting list. D was waitlisted today. She is white, Catholic and a triple legacy (both parents are grads and her sibling is a current Fordham student).

I’m not going to go through the whole format, but briefly:

SAT: M: 550, CR: 670, Writing 630? 650? (essay 9)
ACT: 27 composite
GPA: 3.47, all IB classes except for math – which has always been a struggle for her and pulls down her GPA.
Rank: Top 20%

Teacher Recs: 2 – we were told Excellent
Guidance: 1 – we were told Excellent
Personal Essay – she was told it was “exceptionally good.” Who knows?

Usual ECs and CAS hours, with a longtime concentration in music performance and competitions

Attends large, very diverse public HS in a DC suburb.

Hooks: Legacy

ACCEPTED!
With a scholarship, though it was pretty small.

SAT: Math- 500, CR- 650, Writing- 660
GPA: 3.45…although it has likely gone up since last semester.
Rank: Top 20%
Enrolled in all IB classes…so that’s seven IB classes. It’s pretty horrific lmao.

Teacher Recs- 2, and I’m confident they were very good.
Guidance- 1, same as above. My guidance counselor likes me a lot lol.
Personal Essay- strong.

I have a lot of ECs, I’m in all three divisions of my choir (choir is a really big deal in my school), Drama Club, also involved in community theater in my city, I take advanced dance classes and I also volunteer as an assistant dance teacher, umm student council type stuff, school newspaper, Link Crew, etc. etc.

I have a lot of volunteer work because IB requires 150 CAS hours. So I have about 200+ hours (-_-).

Attended a rigiorous, diverse, private high school right outside of NYC in NJ. I’m Irish-Catholic, and I have no familial ties to the university whatsoever.

Still, I’m not sure if I’m going to go. I got into Seton Hall University with a much larger scholarship, and Fordham is already $10,000 dollars more. I don’t know, I’m just not sure Fordham’s worth THAT much more money.

I am STUNNED at some of the waitlisted results above. Just STUNNED. My sincere empathetic regrets to those people. But it is what it is. And every year college admissions results get more competitive and more and more bizarre. People who get in we are surprised about and people who get waitlisted or rejected we are surprised about. I have no earthly idea what drives these decisions. Sometimes I think they use a popcorn machine to make decisions. Or one of those lottery machines that shoots out ping pong balls with numbers on them. Really.

Oh well.

For those waitlisted or rejected, do not despair. Life does go on. Pick wisely from the schools that have accepted you already. Visit them again in April if you can. Turn the page and look forward, not backwards. Whatever you do…do NOT emote about this and go into a deep funk. Hold your heads high and look forward to going to college in the fall.

Javaid91: It wouldn’t make sense to draw any sort of conclusion like that, based on 2 or 3 posts made on an anonymous forum. That’s 2 or 3 out of how many thousands of decisions sent out?

**Decision: ACCEPTED **

[/ul]General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc:
Without scholarship, this isn’t an option sadly! Congrats to everyone else who got in!

I like how every single recommendation is “flawless” or “spectacular.”

Honestly, judging by how people rate their evaluations, the recommendation section of an application is a complete moot point.

I don’t mean to be catty, but I’ve never seen anyone rate their recommendation as less than perfect.
