Hello guys, I was recently accepted to Fordham! I’ve been really stressed out because I have no idea what I wanna major in for pre-med. (I understand I have time but I’m gonna need help eventually :)) I’ve been told many mixed things. I’ve heard people say not to major in Biology because it’s “basic” and you should stand out when applying to medical schools. I’ve also heard your major doesn’t matter to medical schools. While Fordham doesn’t offer many majors in the Sciences, I was wondering what you guys thought for any of you who went to Fordham or had friends/children in Fordham for pre-med. I was originally planning on majoring in Political Science for pre-med but realized there are too many required courses not related to/helpful for the MCAT so I might just minor in it. Lastly, if you have any tips for someone following the Pre-Med route specifically at Fordham please let me know! Thank you so much!
I am gong to be brutally honest here. I also saw you posted about NYU so if you are accepted there, that’s an option.
Fordham is NOT known for its science. There are students there who are doing/have done very very well for themselves. The labs are not updated. Gabelli has the state-of-the-art stuff. My daughter had a seminar to attend that was in Gabelli and her mouth just fell open at what was there and she wanted to cry because she has to do additional work for chemistry because the equipment is old and dirty and the results get skewed.
My daughter has a friend who is in prehealth in NYU (CompSci Major and is in the Liberal Arts School). He helped her with chemistry but was totally flummoxed with Fordham’s way of doing things. She could do his work, no problem.
Med school does not care where you got your grades from, as long as they’re exceptional and of course, you do need to stand out. My daughter has friends in prehealth at Fordham and they are exceptionally smart and are doing great and a few have/are moving on the med school. One person I know commented about the prehealth program at Fordham as being one of the toughest and is designed to fail you. And this person goes to Yale.
We tell people that when it comes to the prehealth program at Fordham, to look elsewhere. It also depends on the person, because there are those who took APs in Chemistry/Biology/Orgo, got 5’s and STILL fail. Then there are the one or two that find it the easiest thing in the world.
If your scholarship is dependent on maintaining a GPA to keep it, don’t do prehealth. You will jeopardize it. Many drop it. My daughter did. She was going to lose her scholarship and she is very bright and loves science. Like I said, she was able to do science at NYU with her friends with no problem. But it took a toll on her grades and health and when she dropped it, she got her life back.
Unfortunately NYU is no longer an option as I was denied. My sister completed pre med at Fordham and while it was difficult, she was able to maintain a decent GPA and get decent score on her MCAT. Thank you so much for your help. @MomTheChauffer
If you don’t mind me asking, how decent was the gpa? @umiboomi was it good enough to get into an allopathic school?
I’m actually not sure what her exact GPA was. I believe it was around mid 80’s. @cusnew
Is she going to medical school @umiboomi ?
She is currently in medical school. @cusnew
I got into Fordham as well with a schlorship. Biology major. Not sure if I am attending yet. I got into stonybrook as well. What school is better for the sciences pre med track??
I don’t know anything about Pre-Med at Fordham, but if I can make a suggestion…go to the Open House/Preview this weekend if you can. Ask current students about the program. There is even a student only panel set up; no administrators, so you can ask the hard questions and they can give honest feedback.
I think that the two posters on CC have made some very valid points, and clearly they are unhappy about the program, but they are only 2 people. Are they the anomaly or the norm? The only way to find out is to get a better cross section.
If you can’t go, perhaps try to find last year’s FB group, and message some of those people.
Thanks for the insight. Going this wednesday April 5. I also got into manhattan college and stonybrook. Which school would you recommend for sciences??
What school are u going too??
I am a parent of twin Ds who are strongly considering Fordham Lincoln Center. They spent a day there taking classes…a great way to meet kids and professors, look online. There are many days offered. The website says sign up for one class but they each did two. They will be attending the Sprong preview on Saturday.
They are not pre med majors.
Sounds great. Keep me posted. Going this Wednesday to Rose Hill. Only 30 mins from my house. I will let you know if we like it. How was your financial aid package??
