@jazkids. Sorry I feel your pain. No mail here on the east coast either. I have to say that I’ve been through this college process twice and Fordham’s way of notitfying is agonizing. I understand and appreciate that an email system is subject to issues, so mail may be more reliable for acceptances, however, emailing the rejections would really relieve much anxiety for many. We applied ED with true intent as Fordham as our top school, deferred and made to wait til April 1 for our decision. Rejection is one thing, this is another. Really a merciless process. We still wait with a hopeful but heavy heart.

supashv and number41x, I suppose this confirms that no new batch was sent. I would have ignored this delay if not for the fact that it was S #1 choice. I guess we will have to transition now into assuming this is a rejection and start deciding on where to go (elsewhere).

I’m not much for grovelling and I tell my kid that if a College doesn’t want you then you need to reject them too in your mind.

So switching gears to #1 Catholic School choice to be Loyola Marymount.

Still waiting it out on Long Island.
I would like to subscribe to the addage of no news is good news and good things are worth waiting for but we shall see and hope for the best.
Good luck to all.

All responses have gone out from Fordham, so any further delay is with the USPS. Please try and be patient. Admit rate this year was about 40%. Good luck to those still waiting, and if you dont get the response you were looking for, take my very best wishes. Give your kid a hug, wipe the tears and move along. I have been there with other schools. Things happen for a reason in life, and we often don’t see that reason until much later, sometimes years later. Focus on those who accepted you (if Fordham doesn’t), and look forwards and upwards.

God bless.

Of course everything happens for a reason, even an idiot could tell you that. But what the idiot forgets to tell you is that it’s usually bad news and very rarely good news. I hate that saying!

I dont appreciate that number41. Seriously. I am trying to be helpful and comforting to those whose hearts were set on Fordham and who MAY get deferred or rejected. Bad news is never easy to accept. But its a growing experience. And frankly, I know of very very few people who were accepted to 100% of their college choices.

We can choose to be bitter or we can choose to be mature, after a reasonable time to grieve. I can tell you that in our cycle in 06-07 we went through some pain and so I empathize with those who are experiencing that at Fordham, a school I happen to love.

I get that you are frustrated and still waiting. It might be bad news and it might not be. I am not privy to the details of the batches, I only know they are all out. Tomorrow is Friday and I suspect all the remaining applicants waiting to hear will receive their responses.

If you don’t get the response you want, then I truly wish you the very best and I will be very happy to give you my views on the schools which did accept you with some general advice. You see…at Fordham we are a family and I take that responsibility seriously. Its part of who we are. (And I don’t work there.)

Well said sovereigndebt! You have been very helpful for those of on the Fordham threads, much more so than any other college thread I’ve been on. I for one appreciate all the time and information you have given all of us here.

sovereigndebt, your semi-inside information is of course so appreciated and you really do a great service in promoting Fordham. Thank you.

You said that all responses are out. Do you know when they went out? I know you don’t know if it’s a mix of acceptances/waitlists/rejections but at least getting a sense of the timing might help overcome the waiting.

I’m not kidding that I’ve put Fordham and the back-burner in my head and S head. But your helpful comments at least clarifies our expectation.

I truly echo the sentiment of westie22.
sovereign debt, you have provided not only a wealth of information but thoughtful, sage articulate and sympathetic/empathetic commentary.
I,for one am truly appreciative of your efforts and the feedback from others in the same boat.
We are still awaiting results here on Long Island. Like Christmas, it too shall come and pass. We are all ready to assist our son as he sets sail on his college journey, wherever that may be.

Thank you again,
luckymom2:)

Soverigndebt, you’ve been nothing but helpful on CC. Thanks for your insight and your words of encouragement. Sorry about what you have to put up with from some who understandably are frustrated or stressed.

We appreciate you!

Soverigndebt, as a deferred applicant , does showing tons of interest do anything for admissions.

Thanks folks. I really appreciate your kindness. I do it because I love Fordham and because I believe in the Fordham family. Its not about me, its about them.

For those who don’t make the cut, I am truly sorry. College admissions is very quirky and often arbitrary…when we all know that SAT scores are not a real solid indicator of success in college. And Fordham’s rise in the national rankings from number 85 to 53 in recent years means it gets double the applications it used to receive. Success breeds success as they say.

I think the last batch went out on Tuesday but don’t hold me to that. The USPS is also quirky and there are millions of admissions letters that have to be delivered this week…most colleges have the same notification dates.

But as much as I love Fordham, I am also sanguine enough to know that many colleges provide a superb education for your kids. So may your selections and then buy the gear!

got the mail about 3 days ago, from California!

however, financial aid not looking too good, someone amazing shall get my spot :)

My S still has not heard from Fordham after being deferred under EA. It does not say much for the school to hold onto their rejections the way they do, and it leaves a bitter taste in your mouth even if you haven’t received the bad news yet. I am sure these decisions have been sitting in a pile for weeks. I empathize with everyone on this blog in a similar position, and I hope that a LOT of Fordham’s acceptances turn them down.It would serve this college right. I know many kids who have yes’s from Fordham who don’t plan on going; it was a back up school for them. They took up EA spots and merit money at the expense of our own kids. 40% acceptance rate? big deal – I am sure they are not going to have a great up-take percentage.

P.S. I too hate those quotes about everything works out for the best; go suck an egg!

Hi, A thin letter just arrived at our house and I can see “Wait List” in big black letters through the envelope.

I guess I’ll be posting a new link for wait list questions if my son decides to stick it out. In the meantime, I do need to know about financial aid (need-based), to see if it’s worth it for him to get on the wait list. Our EFC is under $7,000, but we’re finding that some schools ignore that figure and leave us with $30K or more to pay.

Has anyone gotten need-based aid yet? If so, how is it?
Thanks!

to Tiger1987:
I agree that sending out rejections/wait list letters last (if that’s what Fordham has done) is really a terrible way to do things.

Since acceptance letters are sent out as packages (I imagine), they would take longer to put together and possibly spend a longer time in the mail. Why not send out rejections/wait list FIRST, so kids will know and not wait and wonder, and then send out acceptances? I hope someone from Fordham’s admissions office will consider this because it would truly be more humane.

Adele:

query…why is it terrible if they do it that way? I mean come on…between sending out acceptances on Friday or Saturday and sending out rejections and wait lists on Monday and Tuesday…what is the real difference here? 3 days? Is there a special day you want to be notified you didnt get in? Really? There is never a good day to get bad news, frankly.

Finally, they know kids/parents are very anxious and they have to respond to 33,000 people. It might be by zip code. It might be random selection. It might be alphabetical. It might be none of the above.

But if I were running the department, a logical method might well be sending good news first and bad news last.

SovereignDebt: You are so arrogant. Obviously you have no empathy for the wait listed and rejected students. Sending these out last when everyone know the acceptances went out first is like being the last kid on the bench when they are picking baseball teams in gym class. The year is 2012. Put them all in the mail on the same day. Better yet Fordham – email! Why bother with this portal nonsense if you can’t integrate the technology seamlessly into your admissions processes? Other schools execute this flawlessly. We were interested in the business school, but really, this is no way to do business.

Tiger:

Please. I am truly sorry you are in this situation. But being vindictive against Fordham is not the right way to handle this. I empathize. I’ve been through this with other schools and more than one kid. Admissions is quirky. Schools could fill their entire classes with 4.0/4.0 gpa and 1600/1600 SAT kids all day long. But they don’t. They diversify, socially, academically, financially (someone has to pay the freight…they need revenue unless they want to go out of business!), geographically, athletically, racially, ethnically, public vs. private HS, on and on and on. There are roughly 1800 seats in the Freshman class at Rose Hill/Gabelli. Some of those are commuters. 33,000 applications. They had an acceptance rate of 40%. Its getting VERY tough to gain admission to Fordham…the applicant pool is simply astounding with their credentials!

They don’t do this to hurt people or torture people. NO SCHOOL sends out bad news first. Not one. They all send them out in batches over a 3-4 day period. The USPS does the rest.

You can argue an email would be better, but frankly, Fordham feels that is impersonal and cruel…and would prefer a letter from the Dean for Admissions.

They will have a yield of roughly 14-15%, so many kids do go elsewhere…some for geographic reasons, some for higher ranking schools, and some for financial reasons. The common application has proliferated applications nationally and kids now routinely apply to 15 schools. Fordham has ZERO control over that.

The frustration is normal, but please don’t attack Fordham. Its a fabulous school trying to do its best. Thank you.

Tiger: your last post calling me arrogant is really all I needed to hear. That is unprofessional and very uncalled for. It really paints you in a different light.

I wish you and your kid the best. Fordham doesnt need this kind of commentary.

Thanks and have a nice day.
