Fordham University Class of 2016 Decisions

I can understand a kid taking it personally against the school at a rejection/waitlist, but a parent? Geez I didn’t get all up in arms when my kid was rejected by 4 schools (one being a top choice). What kind of example are you sending your kid? Take a cue from sovereigndebt and show a little class. Like she said what difference does it make when you find out, the end result is the same.

Thanks westie. Its frustrating for everyone…including Fordham. But its the process at every school. Admissions is a thankless job, under a lot of pressure. (I’m not employed by Fordham fwiw.)

I totally understand the disappointment and angst and tears. We had one in particular in the South in December 06 that was extremely bitter, made more bitter by a girl who did get accepted in my D’s high school class and then spurned it to go elsewhere…arrrrgh! We learned to separate our feelings about the admissions process from the school at large…and in time to be sanguine about the entire ordeal. In hindsight, we picked Fordham and that was the RIGHT decision for us. (And we are not New Yorkers!) The other school would have been a completely different experience.

Its okay to feel bad, down, cry and punch your PILLOW! Its not okay to yell at people, become vindictive and then go on a hate fest. Life is full of disappointments; we as adults know that.

We know kids at Fordham who got more money and didnt need a dime! Frustrating. But that is life. No school is perfect.

I hope your D accepts the offer from Fordham and comes with a really good and strong attitude about being a member of the Fordham family! (My D met a young man spurned by Notre Dame…and they are still dating.)

My best wishes to all, sincerely.

The problem with when you find out is that there are now social forums such as this one where others are finding out good news days before some are finding out bad news. We were all told April 1st. We were not told that some would be March 24th, 25th, 26th,27th,28th,29th 30th. I also think that it is unfair to all for an insider to report on the past practices of Fordham’s notification process. Most people here read that the past practice was to send rejections out last…so it left those of us who did not receive a notice yet to assume it was a rejection…and most likely will be today or tomorrow. The best approach would to be to send all notifications, whether acceptances, waitlists, or rejections at the same time.

Expecting to receive my rejection letter today

Deferred and now…waitlisted.

Well I happen to like when people come on this forum and let people know what the school’s past practices has been, especially when it has been going on for several years. At the very least the people who are denied/waitlisted are somewhat prepared for the worst now. I’m not saying that Fordham is sending out decisions the “right” way, maybe it can be done better, but apparently this is the way they are doing it for now. I know it’s upsetting my own D was denied from 2 schools that were very clear matches for her, even her GC was shocked she didn’t get in. There are just so many factors that come into play in the admissions process and each school is different.

waitlisted :frowning: when will they send out final decisions on who gets accepted from the waitlist? fordham was my #1

And, btw, I spoke with a personal friend who is an admission counselor at an Ivy. She shared with me that they have a policy of not wait-listing applicants that were already deferred. That in good conscious they felt they owed the student a definitive answer after already waiting six months. Seems that Fordham’s quest to be the best is all business.

Same here just got letter offered spot on waiting list…in NJ… Got in to St. Joe’s , St. Johns, Seton Hall…Now what do we do ? Looks we have to give deposit to different school By May 1st then if we get offered a spot in Fordham we loose that money if we decide to attend Fordham. Man I am confused… Looks like the 30k a year from St. Johns or St. Joe’s I got is looking better…

Alas, the final word from Fordham came today. If you were on this discussion forum it was beacause you and your children are reaching for the sky. That doesn’t end with college acceptances or rejections.
Best of Luck to All!

Haven’t gotten our mail yet but the pattern is at least clear. Good thing we moved on ahead of time, at least emotionally. Will be expecting the thin envelope.

@allin22 - sorry you didn’t get the news that you want. I would suggest that the best course of action is to decide which is your top choice out of the schools you were admitted to, re-visit them if you want, put in a deposit at one, and move forward. If you do get in off the Fordham wait list, you can deal with it at that point – if not you still have some great options so congratulations.

@Tiger - I don’t think sovreigndebt or anyone here is trying to be arrogant. I understand what you are saying and I’m sorry things did not work out as you would have liked. The fact is that each school creates a way of doing things that works for them. I agree that sending all the decisions out the same day might be better, but there is nothing anyone on this site can do to change that. Unfortunately, there is no good way to give out bad news. Snail mail is imperfect (more and more so with the USPS not getting mail delivered quite as quickly as it used to) but on-line notification has issues as well (witness Vassar’s on-line gaffe this year of putting up acceptance letters to people they did not accept and other school’s online sites crashing).

Best of luck to everyone going forward – be it at Fordham or elsewhere.

This is nothing against sovereigndebt - he/she is a real asset to this forum. But I think Tiger1987 made a great point: “Why bother with this portal nonsense if you can’t integrate the technology seamlessly into your admissions processes? Other schools execute this flawlessly.” I fully agree. The page you reach when you click on the financial aid link states " Within this site you can:

•Check the status of your application
•View a list of documents we’ve received from you and a list of the documents still outstanding

Maybe it was just me but I couldn’t see any of that? I also do not see a valid reason for sending out acceptances and waitlist/rejections at different times. But that is just my humble opinion… Just some good old constructive feedback to Fordham.

We haven’t heard yet so I’m assuming the worst, but my son has 3 good options with Northeastern, Penn State/Smeal, and Pitt so I feel thankful for that.

Good luck to you all!

THANKS HAPPY1!!! I guess that’s what I will do. Fordham was my top choice so I would still like to get in off the waiting list. We will see what happens until then I will have to move forward. We still have a shot for all of us that were put on the waiting list. Good luck to all!!

The problem with the portal idea is that my S did common app and EA and we did not get any portal information. So apparently that’s not completely implemented.

I have no bad feelings about (potentially) not getting in to Fordham (or other schools). Somehow I think it will all work out. Just realize that after 5 years in the workplace, no one will care where you went to College, unless you went to Harvard, et al.

Waitlisted - I saw that about 10% of people get off the waitlist - is there any way to improve my chances of such?

I still haven’t received any final decision from Fordham University. Maybe my parents are throwing letters away … ? I live in Florida by the way.
Can I just check online or call ?

With 33,000 responses to mail out, perhaps Fordham is also doing what the USPS has requested, staggering batches so its easier to sort out. NYU, Columbia, Barnard, St. John’s, all CUNY schools etc in New York send them out this week and its tough on the postal service.

Fordham says everyone will know by April 1. They did not ever state they will mail them out on April 1, to my knowledge.

They prioritize them, I believe, with acceptances first (not even sure if that is hard and fast…just anecdotal information!), as kids who get in want to know so they can plan their trips to visit Fordham for admitted orientation in two weeks.

I am not aware of any school anywhere which mails out rejections first. If you have different information, please post it and source it.

As for the Ivy League…they are in a league all their own, and a good number of their applications are rejected, like 90%. So that comment is a bit disingenuous it seems to me. Fordham rejects ultimately around 58% or so.

I think historically Fordham DOES go to the waitlist, but I also think its mostly commuters because there isnt enough dorm space…and classes are limited. If you live far away and can’t commute, I believe that diminishes substantially your chances of getting in. Sorry. But you can call and ask if you like. If you truly want to go to Fordham and will spurn other offers, you need to communicate that to Fordham. Not saying people who live a distance won’t get in…I don’t have any stats on that. But I am also not saying you will be guaranteed residence on campus either, if you do get in off the waitlist. And I have ZERO stats on how many taken off the waitlist end up actually enrolling…and what the yield is for that. What is true is that they give you a very very short notice and expect a response almost immediately so they can offer someone else.

I strongly recommend people who are waitlisted to look forward and upwards, close the books and move along. Ditto for rejected folks. Its painful, I know.

I think Fordham uses “the portal” as far as ensuring your application is complete, its not used for notifications on admissions. Some schools have had HUGE issues with email notices, such as Vassar and UNC among others. And its frankly rather impersonal if you ask me. I would prefer a letter signed by the admissions director.

if someone is admitted this late in the week, please let us know so we can determine if we have described the process accurately. Nobody here works there and we are working from anecdotes and personal experience, not because some administrator told us the precise method or runs the mail room.

Good luck to everyone in their future endeavors.

Wait list info is probably online. A couple of years ago (Princeton Review) 1,490 accepted a place on the wait list and 134 were enrolled off it. No info on how many were commuters.

Waitlisted at Fordham. Add that to the pile of Waitlisted at Northeastern, U Delaware, Lehigh, U of Richmond. Will attend Smeal at Penn State.
