Fordham University Class of 2016 Decisions

My daugther received her letter of being waitlisted today. She was crushed and is an outstanding student with a 3.9 GPA and strong SATs + subject matter tests like others noted here. It’s a numbers game. She will send in the card she still wants to go to Fordham, send some additional information, etc…She now has to move on and make a decision where she wants to go school from the other sound, good schools she was accepted with scholarships (partial) - Iona College, Manhattan College, Duquanse Univ, Loyola. IF Fordham comes back to offer her a spot, worst case scenario I lose my deposit. Life could be worse. She can also transfer into Fordham at a later date. Good luck to all

It says in the letter that last year 5,900 people were waitlisted at Fordham and 600 were offered admission.

bah. waitlisted with mediocre everything. (I’m an academic late-bloomer) probably won’t accept a place on the list.

@sovereigndebt I really appreciate your enthusiasm and dedication to Fordham. It is a wonderful school with many great qualities. But given the information you just shared I have to say to wait list over 5,000 applicants, many of those who have already been deferred, and live out of state, is some what disingenuous to me. Better to give these kids a decision, even if it is a no, and allow them to move on with a clear head.

accepted at Gabelli but I don’t think I will go. I got into Lehigh, Northeastern, Union NY, Binghamton and Quinnipiac as well. I got rejected by UPenn-Wharton. I wanted to apply to a city school so I chose Fordham.

SupashV: I understand. But trust me, there is more to being waitlisted than meets the eye. For most colleges, a waitlist says to the student: you are an outstanding candidate and it was very close but due to the extremely competitive pool of applicants, you just didnt quite make it, though we know you would succeed here if you were admitted. Second, for those who WILL drop everything at the last minute for Fordham it is a chance.

Most colleges have HUGE waitlists. Fordham knows its “yield” on the waitlist is 10% give or take…so really the FINAL WAIT LIST is roughly 500-600, and that is what they work from for purposes of offering anyone a spot in May.

Personally, I would prefer to get a waitlist letter than be one of the “sorry, you have been rejected letters.” My kid got a few waitlist letters and it softened the blow, though still very very disappointing.

I am sorry you were waitlisted. Truly. It is a numbers game, yes. SAT counts MOST, then gpa and class rank, then EC’s, then essay, then recommendations, in that order.

Its not a fun business, I can assure you (from what I have heard.)

So its not disingenuous at all. Its in fact humane and informing students they are wonderful people who will succeed and would succeed at Fordham if they are admitted.

What I dont know is the final number of people offered who get off the waitlist. Since they triple up in dorms sometimes, that tells me its not many people who live far away. Its hard to guess how many will accept an offer.

I wish you all the best where else are you in?

collegebro: May I please inquire why you would reject Gabelli? Its a fabulous school in a NEWLY renovated state of the art building with a trading floor! Mario Gabelli funded it. Think hard before rejecting Fordham. Its up to you, of course.

Also, at least one person received an acceptance letter today (Seattle?) in Washington State. So some did go out later than last Friday and Saturday.

@sovereigndebt. Thank you. We are still waiting on one acceptance. But, as of right now its looking like NYU with a scholarship. LOL…go figure!!!

supashv: Yep…that happens a LOT. We say no and they say yes, and they say no and we say yes! Of course, if you applied to Lincoln Center its a tough slot since its much much smaller than Rose Hill.

Good luck to you.

However, apparently I was wrong on the wait list too…go figure! LOL. There are residents (dorms) who are taken off the wait list, not just commuters.

People should call Fordham and express a strong interest…as in, “if you take me I will come” (and mean it!) and see if they will give you an indication of where you sit on the wait list. Of course they wont know too much until after May 1. But most wait list offers from most colleges go out from May 1 to May 15.

Good luck!

Got my mail today in MA. Was deferred early action and now waitlisted. Not too crushed…I applied to 8 schools and Fordham was my 6th choice. I never got a chance to visit so maybe I would have liked it better had I seen it before I got this letter. Oh, well got into my #2 choice so hopefully I can afford it! :)

Have been following this thread---- just wanted to say that my daughter got her acceptance yesterday- Friday, in Virginia. So, holding the rejections does not seem to be what they are doing. It was great news for us as she had her fair share of rejections… Best of luck to all with decisions…

tootsie…I am glad to hear that. Like I stated, the trend has been to send out most acceptances in the early batches and the negative responses later…but that is anecdotal. I don’t have precise information on how they do that (not that it really matters anyway). They sent everything out between last Friday and this past Tuesday. The USPS has a lot to do with it as well…and for some it was the financial aid package/scholarship committee that may have held it up.

glad your daughter has been accepted! Welcome to the Fordham family. I hope your daughter attends Fordham and you all attend the accepted student orientation April 14-15. Fr. McShane’s presentation is wonderful and he likes to meet students from all over and talk with them…very approachable! Its also fun to see your classmates and their families, tour the campus, meet some Deans, professors and administrators, meet the Rose Hill Society tour guides/students, and tour the dorms!

Let me know if I can help with anything!

Sovereigndebt
I have been following your posts - both current and past - regarding waitlisted candidates and your words of wisdom. You come across opinionated and sound as if you work for Fordham. If you don’t work for Fordham you must have some inside track to information to the insights you write.
As posted the other day my daughter was waitlisted and she was devasted as Fordham was her #1 school. She already spoke to the Admissions person who she has been staying in contact with from her 3 visits and just fired off a letter of her strong intention along with the waitlist letter response. If they call her tomorrow she would accept. Paying for it would be a big challenge but I would do anything for her.
I have read many blogs from students accross many schools that were waitlisted. They all feel they busted their butts taking AP courses, enrolling in leadership roles, performed community service, etc…all for naut when that letter came in the mail. Yes, it hurts and it is the start of many of lifes dissapointments to come.
Have empathy but we also need to be firm that there are other choices, maybe #2 or #3, that they can be just as happy. And there is always the oppty to apply as a transfer student if they wish.
God speed!

Goodness. Not sure where that came from. No good deed goes unpunished I suppose.

I repeat, I dont work for Fordham. I don’t have “inside information” on any student applications, only anecdotal reports from students at Fordham, classmates of my kid, and from others I know who have applied and either attended or didnt. I do know some school counselors however.

My efforts arent intended to be opinionated in a negative sense. I am not perfect nor do I have all the answers. I strive to be comforting and helpful.

We’ve been through this process as well with my kids.

I am sorry that anyone is waitlisted or rejected. I am only trying to help those in that situation to see a silver lining and to find their path to success in college. No college is perfect and no college is “the only game in town.” Of course you can apply to transfer, but I am not a fan of transfering unless there are compelling reasons.

I have tremendous empathy. To suggest otherwise is incorrect and really barking up the wrong tree.

You should know that millions of kids didnt get their number one choice, from Harvard to Pomona to Michigan State to whatever. What that means is that you are not alone, not that I am insensitive…and thus, to take solace in that fact. The best policy is to focus on where she was accepted and make a decision and then embrace that school.

Fordham does go to the waitlist. About 10% of those offered a spot on the list take it. And I would guess (but I don’t know) that about 10% of those will be offered spots at Fordham…and even fewer will eventually enroll at Fordham because they have since moved on to their other school.

I wish you luck and good tidings.

You absolutely do work for the company. No one feels the need to clarify every statement or correct every inaccuracy unless they have direct knowledge of the information. That being said, I do thank you for the information that you have shared on this forum. I have found it to be very helpful. For any parent or future student reading this-there is a direct pattern to all universities. If your child applies to a university and all they receive is “we have received your apllication” and “and don’t forget to fill out your FAFSA,” until notification day, then there is probaly a rejection letter forthcoming. Every school that my son was accepted to (8) all kept us abreast on what the university is doing, and provided additional information not priviledged to others who were not admitted. The (3) schools, that he was not admitted to did not. By the way, I am using my son’s account ID this evening- did not know about this forum prior to 2 weeks ago. I have 2 other children, both graduates, and experienced the exact same patterm. I wish there was a “sovereigndebt” on every forum!

Thanks Kingsport. But I promise you…I dont work for them, I dont live in New York and my kid graduated last year. Its a labor of love. I do try and encourage people to apply and accept an offer of admission, however! :-)

Sdebt, Fordham needs to hire you! Thanks for the kind words---- it will boil down to financial aid for us… as much as we like Fordham, I just cannot see her going into 100k debt for a bachelors degree. We are keeping our fingers crossed.

First of all - I thought this thread was to notify upcoming applicants of statistics so they can appropriately weigh their chances? It has been more of insider info which I admit, I have followed with interest.
S - was waitlisted today probably due to GPA
will finish with a GPA of - 3.5
ACT - 28, superscore - 29
president of business club, excellent essay (received comments from other schools),excellent community service with research institution, worked multiple jobs, varsity athlete in high calibur program, and 5 AP classes. Did not submit teacher rec b/c it was optional - should have submitted.
I personally think the “free application” was designed to make the school appear more selective. Too bad - I lived in NYC for a decade and would have liked to sell the city to my S. He would have loved it but - C’est la vie…Fordham’s loss…
