Fordham vs. Emerson vs. NYU - Stage Management

As a high school junior looking at prospective universities to study theater I find Fordham, Emerson and NYU to be my greatest interests.

I am interested in concentrating in stage management. I also have an interest in arts administration, though I do not believe concentrations are offered for arts administration at either of these three schools at the undergraduate level.

Can anybody offer insight onto the perks of stage management at these three schools, as well as opportunities for studying arts administration at these schools? I can find very little about the stage management programs at these three schools.

Of great interest to me is which school sees the most graduates going to actually work in the industry? Only statistics for anything I have found are the ones that Emerson publishes on their website and they don't look fabulous.

Financial situation mandates that I can cover the first $30,000 of tuition annually. I live in New York city, so I would stay at home for NYU or Fordham.

Thank you.

Fordham Theatre is at the Lincoln Center campus and admissions are competitive. My S is a Theatre major in the Performance/Playwriting tracks and there are 2 Design/Production majors in the Class of 2014. Admissions is competitive but you can still be admitted to the university and minor in Theatre if you are not accepted into the program.

[Design and Production Major](http://www.fordham.edu/academics/programs_at_fordham_/theatre_department/prospective_students/training__curriculum/_design_and_producti_69139.asp)

My S has a close friend who is at Emerson in Stage Management. She loves it and loves Boston…I don’t think she’ll come back to NY. Some things to consider include where you ultimately want to end up and what type of college experience you are looking for…you will have a different experience as a commuter to Fordham or NYU than you will have as a resident student at Emerson.

Cost may be a factor for you in the end as all three private schools are expensive but I think you are on the right track with your research and should apply to all three. Just make sure you find yourself a good safety option that you can afford and would be happy to attend.

BTW, I recommend you visit all of the schools and ask specific questions of people in the Theatre departments. Admissions will probably not have the answers you are looking for. DEFINITELY go to the Fall Open Houses at Fordham and NYU since you live in the city.

Good luck! :)

If you wanna study theatre NYU is the way to go. Their program is just amazing and the opportunities they provide are endless. I think you’ll also find more of an artsy crowd at NYU. Not that Fordham doesnt have that…but its def not in the same quantity.

Def do NYU if you can. I mean why not? Its a better ranked school and costs basically the same as Fordham.

Fordham actually has an amazing Theatre program with a lot of personal attention and opportunities given the smaller size of the Theatre department but quantifying the “artsy crowd” is NOT the most important criteria I would suggest one use when deciding on a program. For performance, for example, NYU has a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT program than Fordham…one is a BFA and one is a BA. This, to me, is a very important distinction between the programs and one of the many reasons my S came to Fordham over NYU. OP should thoroughly research the degrees and curriculum for stage management and of course, still has to apply, be accepted and be able to afford any of these three schools!

That NYU is higher ranked is the only fact that citygirl1018 has correct. The rest is conjecture from someone who is not a student at either school. Do your research, visit and form your own opinion about which school is right for you. All three are excellent choices.

Well of course it is important. To have a lot of people around you, similar to you I feel increases motivation. And people who really delve deep into what they do. You have really hardcore theatre students there that just live and breathe theatre. Of course you can find that anywhere but it is in abundance in NYU…and of course the village definitely will give you that vibe. To be in the middle of that artsy scene they have over there with the students and especially in the village I feel is definitely an advantage. For me at least, that what I would like if I was a theatre student…to be so immersed in the culutre and surronded by all that motivation. But it is really up to the individual to decide which is the most “important criteria”.

^^^You are not a student at Fordham. You are not a student at NYU. You are not a Theatre student at all. You have no actual knowledge to be of help to the OP so why exactly are you posting in this forum???

Because I am entitled to my own opinion as you are to yours.
You are neither a student of Fordham or NYU either if youd like to start pointing fingers.
And while I may not be a student at NYU I practically grew up in that school.

You are correct that I am not a student. I am the parent of a theatre student at Fordham who was also accepted at NYU Tisch and so I do have some actual knowledge about the programs to share, not just an opinion that the OP should go to NYU bc it’s my dream school and it’s in the Village. Personally, I think the Village is great and I think that NYU is great for some people. And I KNOW that Fordham is great for others. But most importantly I think that the OP should do the research and attend, if it is affordable, the school that he/she thinks is great.

I did not intend to be disrespectful of your opinion. I just wanted to point out that it is not based upon your knowledge of the Theatre programs at any of the schools the OP asked about. I asked a simple question…why are you posting here? You came on CC one night and posted on a bunch of threads giving a lot of incorrect information. I didn’t choose to post on every thread bc your posts truly speak for themselves.

I remember your story from last year when you were going to transfer into Fordham LC but couldn’t afford it. From your other more recent posts, you have stated that you intend to apply to NYU at some point in the future but that you would not be applying to Fordham. I wish you luck with that but it again, begs the question…why are you posting here? If you aren’t even interested in attending Fordham why are you posting in the Fordham forum???

I am not looking for an answer from you. Nor will I be engaging you further in discussion. I am certain that others reading and posting in this forum are more than capable of discerning the merit of your posts.

I wish you good luck and hope that you are accepted and able to attend NYU. :)
