Fordham vs. George Washington vs. BC vs. NYU vs. Brandeis

Hey there! just wanted to know your school preferences.

can you rank these schools? which is better academically? reputation? over-all?

are there any specific things that might make one school better for you than another even though in terms of academics, one school will be better?

thanks!

My S chose Fordham over BC and NYU. He’s now a freshman at LC and couldn’t be happier with his choice.

Rankings are a superficial way of judging which school is better and the truth is that the school that is best on your list is the one that best suits YOUR needs. If you choose based on that criteria you won’t go wrong.

For some specifics that you should thoroughly look into…both Fordham and BC offer a Jesuit education which for many is of great value. And financially, Fordham offers merit money and BC claims to meet full need.

Where you want to live for the next four years might also be a determining factor…NYC vs. Boston vs. DC. I recommend that you visit all of the schools on your list and see how you feel about them while you are there. Good luck! :)

My D is a freshman at FCRH. Her final decision on which college to attend was between Fordham and George Washington. (She loved BC but financial considerations forced us to eliminate BC from the mix–both GWU and Fordham offered her merit aid.) George Washington is an awesome school and her decision was difficult. Ultimately, she chose Fordham, in large part due to Rose Hill’s “traditional college campus” feel. D is very happy at Fordham. She has made good friends and her professors have been wonderful. She finds her profs to be accessible and sincerely interested in students’ learning. As a parent, my impression is that Fordham’s faculty and administration work very hard to provide a nurturing, welcoming environment and are truly concerned about their students welfare and success.
Before you make your decision on where to attend, be sure to visit the colleges you are considering. Each college has a different vibe and you need to discover where you will be happiest. Good Luck!!!

Thanks for all the input. I’m from a Jesuit HS so Fordham and BC are really attractive for me, but again, the other schools are nice too.

I’ll be sure to follow your advice and visit those schools. Btw, Is Fordham really “more generous” when it comes to need-based financial aid than the others because aid is really a big factor for me.

thanks again!

Well, you have many choices there and all excellent schools. Fordham has faculty with Phds from all of those schools. Some AMAZING faculty in fact.

Fordham’s financial aid department is fraught with all the pitfalls of other schools and its sometimes arbitrary and capricious and very maddening. BUT…the good news is you are at a Jesuit High School and THAT ALONE will catch their attention and likely garner more aid from them, and a scholarship if you qualify. So submit your CSS with your application. All applicants are automatically considered for scholarships at Fordham. But financial aid requires you to submit a CSS and FAFSA.

Picking which school is right for you is your decision/parents decision. We can’t and won’t do that for you. USNWR rankings are vacuous…but Fordham is definitely on the rise and its a white hot school now. Fordham expects over 28,000 applicants this year. Daunting. Its highly competitive.

BC has superb sports teams. Fordham…well…lets just say they are in building/transition mode. BUT the Rose Hill campus is gorgeous and they have sports facilities on campus. The opportunities at Fordham are almost endless, for business and liberal arts students.

The benefit of Fordham is its two educations in one. Thus the school motto on its glossy brochures: Fordham is my school; New York is my campus. Because it will embrace you as you embrace the Bronx and greater NYC.

California is now one of Fordham’s top recruiting states. We have more than 25 kids who ATTEND Fordham from California every year. And growing.

My D1 is a graduating senior this year. She has done exceptionally well and her transformation has been nothing short of stunning and remarkable. I put her on the plane for LaGuardia this morning early…and I said to myself…my oh my how she has changed from those scary Freshman days…she hops a plane, grabs a taxi, grabs a train in Grand Central, bags in tow and heads off to class at 1100 am like its “just business.”

I don’t do school bashing. Period. So I won’t say anything negative about a school, particularly another Catholic school. Whether you are Catholic or not. Fordham is very diverse. Its faculty is diverse. They will get you to think like the Jesuits and get out in the community at some level to make a difference in the lives of others.

The best part about Fordham is that its not a suburban campus, but its an urban campus, with a classic gothic architecture…a classic campus feel, in the middle of the city (Rose Hill). Fordham LC is a mini NYU.

Visit when you can, compare and contrast. But you will find that good kids, smart kids and ambitious kids are at Fordham.

Good luck.

From cal–
I would say be sure to visit the schools and give at least a full day to each. It sounds like you are in Calif? DC, NYC, & Boston are each very different from each other and you will also want to get a feel for the towns — usually Easterners already have been in them for various things during their lives and they know them better than you will. You are making the effort to get here so make the most of it & give it the time it needs.

If you can’t visit, then spend lots of time on their websites doing things like looking at their online course catalogs, go find those blogs so many admissions offices have these days, see if you can get linked up with a student or two to ask questions, read their canpus newspapers online—do anything you can to get a feel for the campus “spirit” from your desk. Good luck!
