Can anyone tell me how placement works for foreign languages with respect to specific SAT II scores?

I have a 660 on my French SAT II. Where will that place me, and how many semesters of French will I have to take to fulfill language requirements?

Also, Portuguese is my first language and the language I speak at home, but I am not an international student. Can this place me out of foreign language requirements?

you can take placement exams at the beginning of the year. those will place you. if Portuguese is your first language, you’ll probably be able to place out of the 2-year requirement.

yeah um I got a follow up question to that
I’m fluent in chinese, and took spanish in hs…(my hs only offers up to spanish 4, so I didnt take any languages senior yr) and I got a horrible score on my spanish AP last year

so i guess my question is how hard are languages at the beginning level in college? is the first year in college comparable to taking the AP spanish course in high school?

AP Spanish is designed to be the equivalent of a second semester sophomore/first semester junior Spanish language class. Depending on where you place on your placement exams, it’ll be eiter equally as difficult or less depending on how well you fare. However, should you decide not to take the placement at all and go to intro level, it’ll be just like an accelerated Spanish I all over again, really nothing to worry about, especially if you’ve already got enough master of Spanish even to complete the APSlang exam.

columbia has a portuguese placement test, i suggest taking the portuguese placement test if i were the OP.

columbia accepts AP scores and SAT II scores, most depts are looking for a score above 750 for SAT II. however, columbia only uses the ap score or sat ii to test out of all 4 semesters, not partial exemption. to receive partial exemption you should take the placement exams offered during orientation week.

to collegeftw, take the chinese placement test. then it is your choice to continue to take a language, and not a necessity to do so.

ok yeah thanks guys
I have no problem taking chinese again haha, but after 4 years of spanish and still doing pretty bad in the subject, I got kind of worried, since it looks like my parents are gonna pretty much make me take spanish in college. I’ll try to review it on my own over the summer, but i’ll probably end up in the Spanish I course as bps suggested lol

adgeek, do you know if the SAT II’s need to be with listening? and will they accept the score for placement if taken in Jun?
Thx,
PS and not to thread jack but just wanted to say thanks for all your other great posts, they have been more than helpful
